my diary

Crunchie, mind you I am no expert but I can Google like a fool.....I did find this which is a little comforting to know.....

Sweating, cramps and salt replacement
Some people believe that salt has to be replaced during hot weather or strenuous exercise to avoid muscle cramps. This is not correct. What you need to replace is water.

The human body can happily survive on just one gram of sodium per day; hormones keep a check on sodium levels and make adjustments for hot weather.

A genuine sodium shortage brought on by hot weather or exercise is extremely rare, even among hard-working athletes.

The muscle cramps that sometimes follow a bout of sweating are due to dehydration, not lack of salt. To prevent cramps, drink plenty of water on hot days and before, during and after exercise. This will also help to even out the water-sodium ratio in the body.

i don't get it then, yesterday must have been my best day for drinking water ever (drank around 3.5 litres). Wish I could get to the bottom of these pains as they're making me feel like I don't want to exercise to make them worse.

I guess what Scarlett is trying to tell you is to drink more water! ;) Your food always looks so good. And you have been eating so healthy. I wouldn't worry about that deep fried pizza too much. I really don't think I know what that is, but it does sound good, and fattening. ;)

but but but I drank 3.5litres yesterday! I don't think my stomach will take any more! I had to visit the wee lassies room about 6 time duringthe course of the day! :(

I'll deffo try to keep on top of drinking my water this week though, is there any indication of how much I need to drink? I keep getting told 8 glasses is good but how much is in one of these glasses?

Scarlett, I suppose it's possible I over worked the muscles but I've never really had this problem before. I did 70 lengths in an hour yesterday which is averaging just over a length a minute. It's a lot more than I'd usually get done in the space of an hour I suppose, maybe that's all it is.

That's probably it, my dear. And you know if it's been a little hot outside, or you've been a little tired, or maybe you've got a little sicky coming on...could be alot of things and that just made your exercise that one time a little more strenuous on your body. I'm sure you will be back to normal in no time. But keep us posted so we know how you are feeling!!! We don't want to have to worry about you. :)

p.s. was just reading your Scottish Brogue in BizeB's journal and thought I'd mention that there is a Scotsman who I think is the most beautiful thing ever created in the history of the world....
Gerard Butler. Do you know who he is?

Potassium

Depleting your potassium can cause cramps - especially in the legs. Eat bananas for some natural potassium. That might help!

I've heard so many things can cause muscle cramps - calcium and/or potassium deficiencies seem to be the most popular. So - more milk and bananas! Mm, make a banana smoothie!

I occasionally get really bad charlie horses in my calves at night, and they seem to come in bouts. Since I started taking a general multivitamin though I haven't had any at all. Maybe that's all you need, and it covers all your bases.

That's probably a good idea about the multivits, I've ran out of bananas recently so looks like I'll need to gt some more!

Checked the damage today and I'm two pounds up, not too worried about this because

a) Food I ate was salty, might have made me retain water.
b) Finished eating at 9pm, not good when going to bed 2 hours later.

I was thinking this morning about my plan for getting a curry sometime at the weekend and you know I'm starting to think it's not really worth it. I think I might just not bother and maybe suggest getting a curry after mum and dad come back. as much as I enjoyed my pizza and chips last night I felt so awful afterwards (ate too fast and too much). What's the point in having a big meal at the beginning of the football then feeling bloaty for the rest of the game. Anyway currys are more fattening than chips and pizza (apparently). I think I may very well just not bother at all. I had thought about getting a curry at the weekend then really pushing myself next week but that would mean setting myself back again - what on earth is the point in doing that?

I shall start pushing myself now! This very day and will hopefully have lost much more by the time mum and dad come back.:D My next mini goal is to get to 140 (that'd be 1.5stone gone - the most I've ever been able to loose when dieting).

I am also going to start getting serious about counting my calories and will have 1200 (1500 on exercise days). I'm starting to wonder if having near 1200 and exercising is putting me into starvation mode a bit, I reccon I'd burn at least 300cals on the worst of my exercise days so that would mean I was getting 900 cals some days. Does 1500 cals on an exercise day sound reasonable? I've never been entirely sure how many cals I was supposed to be taking in?

Today is an exercise day though so I'm going to have 1500 starting with this cereal bar at 61!

hi crunchie....looks to me (i am no expert) that you probably overworked yourself....try to go for a walk if you are still in pain...work thoruhg the muscles but dont push too hard. ... you dont want to cause a problem! as for the water..i was told once to drink 1/2 your goal body weight in ounces so if your goal is 135 then about 65-70 oz of water / day. not sure again how accurate that is...but, more can never hurt! also those 3.5 liters take some time to have its effect so hold tight - you'll be flushing out fat in no time as you have already gotten so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great work.

My arms and leggies feel much better today so I'm heading to the gym. I went across to the super market and stocked up on fresh fruit and got myself an eat treat - a great big juicy tuna steak which I'll have on Friday I think as I'm making my own special past sauce tomorrow.

I got milk rasberries, mango, melon and bananas so think I'll have a smoothie tomorrow with breakfast yum! :D

Crunchie!

Try Advanced "Jointace's Aroma Active Eseential Oils"..It's an excellent Massage Gel that will have you jumping about like a Lamp in absolutely no time :p

I'm glad you are feeling better now Crunchie, and that it didn't put a dent in your exercise plans.

Those two pounds are nothing, I know for a fact that eating bacon makes me put on 3 lbs overnight, and two days later it is gone again. Just stay off salt for a few days and you'll be back on track ;)

And that smoothie sounds delicious, I love mangoes!!

5/07/06

Breakfast: cereal bar (61)

Water: 2 x 500ml bottle, 5 x 400ml glasses
Fruit and veg portions: 4

Calories burned: 350

Today has been pretty good I think! As I was exercising I allowed myself 1500cals and had a net of just over 1200 so that's probably not bad. Had a fairly good gym session and tried jogging/running for the first time for a while and found it much easier now I've shed some more lbs. I think I may well joing the Friday scale club but still undecided, won't have lost much this week I don't think!

You're probably right about that salt making you retain water. But your food today is looking really good so you are back on track. :D One question, what is a curry?

Hey, Crunchie.

Just catching up on you diary. You are doing so great. 54%!!!

It cracks me up that you ate deep fried pizza and then low fat potato chips. I think at that point I would have just given up for the day. I admire your resolve.

What is a potato jacket?

I googled that Gerard fella Scarlett was talking about. Apparently his friends call him Jay and he is a Scorpio. Keep up the good work.
