:makes a mental note to cyber grope steve on a daily basis

Well I usually don't eat until lunch time and then it's a meat and salad roll, diet coke or choc milk and something sweet... then I snack on whatever's around when I get home then a big dinner of whatever tastes good...

I know this isn't really good... but I've just got myself out of the rut I was in and I'm prepared to make a fresh start... so I'm absorbing advice and yours makes a lot of sense :)

Has your weight been fluctuating much while eating like this?

nope. I've been a steady 120ish kg for about the last 12 months now

So even though you don't know it, you are probably eating on average 3500-4000 cals per day.

I think your best bet is to lay out some type of nutritional strategy. If you really did read through this journal, and you understood everything I promoted.... you should have a pretty good idea where to start.

Hint, first place to start is calories. Calories are energy. Too much energy leads to storage. You don't ever REALLY know where you are in terms of energy balance unless you start counting cals. As much as a turn off as that is to some, I highly recommend it.... at least in the beginning until you get your energy balance under control.

Yes 'your' journal has been very informative. :)

So how much of a deficit would be benificial? Say cutting my currrent intake in half?

Thanks again!

Hey Steve
Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice last week and your honesty. Give me a couple of months and you'll be proud...

Steve, even if I don't ask you anything directly, I sure am learning a lot from you!

Thank you for being so helpful. :)

Britta, you could actually gain some weight. It all depends on how long you have been "under-eating." If you have been under eating for quite a while, you have a depressed metabolism. By eating more, you will speed your metabolism back up, but weight gain is a potential side effect.

This is a battle many people have to learn to fight through. Too many individuals have lost weight through starvation dieting. When their weight loss plateaus, which is inevitable, the only thing left to do is repair the depressed metabolism.

How do you avoid this dilemma in the first place? Diet using "healthy" caloric deficits. Even this will lead to slowdowns in one's metabolism, but there are ways to "trick" your body into constant weight loss.

I have no idea where you, personally stand in terms of depression of metabolism. All I can tell you is this. Measure, measure, and then measure some more! Track your weight, track your measurements, and make sure things are going out of control. You are not signed into a contract with your calorie intake. You can and should modify your approach week to week.

Ok, Steve, I am going to try to leave you alone for a while hehe. I will check back in with you though if you dont mind. Thanks again for all of your help :) Hope your weekend was fun!:p

No, I would never suggest a 50% reduction in caloric intake. I don't care if you go more then 20%, but go there is steps.

I would start with a 15% reduction, let it be for 2 weeks or so and see what happens weight-wise. If you lost a couple of lbs each week, don't screw with it until you stop losing.

Brit, I wouldn't care if you posted here every hour. Honestly. You don't have to worry about bombarding me. :)

Steve, just a quick post to say that I do enjoy your posts and advice - harsh as it sometimes may appear (sort of the Simon Cowell of the Board ;) ) - it all sounds like good well informed stuff and I do enjoy your views. You have debunked a few 'myths of weight loss and nutrition' for us - well done!
