Journey, Not A Destination

LOL, Steve is finally stumped! First time I've seen that happen. Valerie, you get the StumpSteve prize for the week! :D :D

Hey, Steve, I finished going through your journal and adding what I thought were the best posts to the
1 "Words" thread
. I may have missed some, so let me know. Also, I know you've got some really good posts in other people's journals, too. If you can think of any to include in the thread, drop me a line.

Hey Steve,

I've just referred this really stubborn friend of mine to you. He's been having problems building muscle (he seems to be talking to a lot of bodybuilders for some stupid reason) and he now insists no one can build muscle without taking steroids. I think he's just bitter that he's not achieving his aims (I also think he's doing a lot of things wrong, such as his diet), but I thought he should speak to someone who's been doing it longer than he has, and who actually KNOWS what they're talking about - he actually told me a crash diet spanning 10-12 days is a good way to lose weight really quickly! I'm a newbie and I had to gasp at the sillyness of that!

He's really cynical at the moment, and he assumes that anyone who's muscular is taking steroids in secret, which I think is bull. I'll be referring him to you, so I hope you don't mind cos I think he has a lot to learn.

Many thanks in advance!!

That is much appreciated.... thanks so much for taking the time, Tom. I run into some of my old posts in other threads at times that I wish others could read. When I do, I will be sure to let you know!

Thanks again.

Ahhh, the "everyone and anyone who has muscles uses steroids" phase. Believe it or not, I've been there. I've talked about steroid use on many other forums, not so much this one.

This day in age, where steroid use is so prevalent, it is easy for the average male gym goer to get depressed with his results. When I first started lifting, I did EVERYTHING wrong. I thought most of my progress was born from what I did in the gym. I would kill myself in there. When the results weren't there, I would go beyond killing myself. I would go to the gym twice per day, everyday.

Later, once I learned about the human body, and its adaptive responses, my routine was completely overhauled to work for the NATURAL lifter.

More importantly, I learned the role nutrition plays with any changes of the body. For someone looking to put on muscle, especially if they are predisposed to "skinniness," nutrition is EVERYTHING. I did not start packing on lean body mass until I understood nutrition.

I built an average physique, but by no means impressive. Couple this with the fact that I had a good amount of friends that started using steroids in high school. I watched them surpass my progress that took my years, in a matter of months. Talk about depressing.

I will say this though, about steroids. There are some very "chemically-minded" individuals out there that know how to administer/utilize steroids in a safe manner. I believe this. However, I would still never take them. Even those who know what they are doing, still become dependent on the drug. Lifting without them seems futile when all you have to do is pop a needle in your butt and gains will come on a lot easier.

Most people I know who have used, don't lift anymore. My friends, they knew my stance on the subject. They felt so ashamed around me. I would explain that if they felt it was worth the risks, then that is their choice, not mine, so they have nothing to be ashamed of. I did however, beg them to only use once or twice.

Wouldn't you know, even after promising, they were hooked for many cycles. Now, none of them still lift. And I have a better build then they ever did while using.

Hard work, knowledge, and consistency goes a very long way. It may not be obvious in the short run. But take into account years of hard work coupled with knowledge, and you can do nothing but realize progress.

I am sure he would look at my pictures and assume I took steroids. However, I bet if he saw me in person, he wouldn't. I don't look un-naturally big at all. Hell, I would argue that if you saw me fully clothed, you wouldn't even know I worked out.

I have never touched a cigarette, let alone a needle!

I hope he connects with me. Is he joining the forum? Or he can email me. Because I know how annoying it can be trying to realize results. It was the ultimate slap in my face busting my ass in the gym and having nothing to show for it. I think I could teach him a thing or two.

Good Morning Steve!! Hows my favorite man on here doing? Just wanted to let you know I've been applying your thoughts on "happiness" into my life...I'm thinking positive!! :)

Great post on steroids. I also feel that people look at me and don't assume that I work out (especially that I can run 5+ miles). According to your pics, I don't see how people could look past those muscles! :) It's really important to spread the word about steroids---I think a lot of young men start in high school and don't educate themselves about it. Hope you're having a great week!

Hell, I would argue that if you saw me fully clothed, you wouldn't even know I worked out.
so then there should be a rule that Steve should never be fully clothed - -we wouldn't want people making such assumptions :)

Have a tuesday...

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to stop in and say hi and thanks for your posts. I hope you are having a good week.

Hiya Beth, missed this yesterday. You are welcome, and hope you are well today! :)

Hey Lena. Things are good, thanks. And I hope they are the same with you!

Good Morning!! Hope you have a good day!:)

Good morning. :D

Hey Lynn! Glad to hear. I know it isn't the easiest thing to do. Our minds, naturally, want to run wild. Taming it is not an easy process. But just like with anything else in life, consistent effort will make a difference.

I wish you the best. :)

Thanks Casey. And you are right, sadly steroids have filtered their way down into grade school. And I would say a large majority of users have absolutely no idea what they are doing with them. That is when it gets dangerous.

I get crap for my position concerning steroids on other forums. It has gotten to the point where, as long as you know what you are doing with the drugs, then it is okay to use.

I disagree. The psychological addiction isn't worth the price you pay.

And steroids in general, to most people aren't educated, seem like this "magic cure" that will give them everything they want, plus more, with ease. This is not the case. It is sad that such a picture has been drawn to the general public, because it only aids in the promotion of the drugs to the masses.

Haha, well I don't really like cloth all that much in the first place. I hate shopping for them, and I would much rather be in a warm climate year round where all you needed was a bathing suit.

Thank you SO much Steve - you've confirmed just what I've been saying. I'm attempting to get him to join the forum, but he just saw the title and said 'My problem isn't weight loss' - it's building muscle mass'...Right now it feels like I'm hitting a brick wall with him, and he's not happy with me either as he thinks I'm saying he doesn't know what he's doing. I know he's really unhappy about it and all I want to do is help him but I think he might be shutting off... I've given him your details, so I can only hope that he swallows his anger and disappointment and contacts you. I appreciate your comments, which I'll also direct him to, so...I guess it's now up to him.. :(

If he "knew" what he was doing, he wouldn't find himself in this predicament.

Unfortunately, most gym goers *think* they know what they are doing. Sadly though, there *smarts* are generated from the standard fitness magazine and even books you find at Amazon.

The information that these forms of media is filled with, just won't cut it for the average, natural lifter looking to increase muscle mass.

Letting pride get in his way of actually learning a thing or two would be ridiculous. He isn't an expert on the subject, so why pretend to be?

Sorry for the harsh bit of reality, but I just don't get some people.

Good morning Steveo!!!!

I will be thinking of you as i do my deadlifts later, in reps of 8 3times!!! ;) later on dude!!:D

Don't worry - you're not being half as harsh as I've been on him. It's up to him what he chooses to do. For all his association with steroid-taking body builder types he's not seeing the effects, so it's up to him... I just find it funny that people with basic knowledge of how the body works find it easy to dish out knowledge (usually condescendingly to me!) on how best to lose weight/get fit, etc, but they find it nigh impossible to listen to advice being offered to them. Over the past 2/3 weeks since I embarked on this way of life, I've had so many contrasting pieces of advice, and each person fancied themselves as experts, although the science (which is what I tend to look at) just didn't add up.

As you said, he's not an expert (he prefers the word of those who take steroids to medical practitioners), so it's up to him if he chooses to seek what he so desperately needs... I've tried my best and won't bring it up with him again...so long as he doesn't bring it up either. It really is a shame he's being so stubborn...(I really hope I'm wrong)
