STAR

Yo Star! I saw your post in the "you don't have to starve" thread. I made a rather lengthy, detailed post. Hope it helps with your questions! :)

And always good to hear when someone around here is doing deadlifts! :D

You stumped me. What is it? Where are you reading about it? Do you have a link?

LOL, Steve is finally stumped! First time I've seen that happen. Valerie, you get the StumpSteve prize for the week! :D :D

LOL! "I'd like to thank God, my family, and this forum....."

No, I heard it from the trainer who tested my body composition--he explained it like this (and you probably have another word for it): light weight/resistance training but at a quick speed to keep your heart rate up, going back from one muscle group to another to let the other muscle groups rest, but keep the heart up and not let the body rest, exactly. Have you heard of such a training? I hadn't until then--he told me about it when I asked what was the best way to get into the next level of fitness.....

Haha, too funny. Congratulations on the award. I love being stumped actually!!

Sure, I have heard of training like that. Sort of a form of circuit training. Would I recommend it as a method of "getting to the next level of fitness"?

First, I would have to ask what you mean. What is the next level of "fitness" in your opinion.

No matter what your answer is, I probably would not recommend this type of training as the solution.

It skews the laws of specificity too much.

Sayy whut?

Well, I think it might be good for me because it's different, maybe! If I incorporated this into my plan and did the 2 days heavy weights, one day elevated heartrate circuit training, and running and kickboxing the rest....

Hmm, whatever floats your boat. If you were my client, no, you wouldn't be doing it. :D

OK, OK! What I DO want to do is be a faster runner--and run longer, too. You don't know much about that, do you? Should I get a book?

Why would you assume I don't know much about that?

Also, why do you want to run faster and longer? Are you looking to compete in something? Not downing your desires, just curious.

Specificity = training in a specific way for a specific outcome. You can't expect the bench press exercise to improve your performance in sprinting, follow me? If you want to run faster, you have to train specifically for it. (e.g. sprints, plyometrics, speed training, etc.)

Sorry--tone is not possible here: I wasn't assuming you don't know, it was a negative way of posing a question. Yes I'm going to run my first 10K race on May 6th (have done a 5K, came in 2nd in my age for women) and I'm looking to do some trail runs in my area: Pretty, huh? :)

I plan on training on a track (I usually run the trails by my house) starting Wed. Yeah, I know that's not enough time to get really good but I didn't know I was going to do the race until a week ago. What are plyometrics?

I wouldn't worry about plyometrics. They are more used for speed and power. When you said you wanted to be faster, I was thinking sprinting, not long distance.

To be a better marathoner, you have to marathon. ;)

Well....I personally don't want to marathon. But tell you what: just now I signed up for 2 runs: one 10K in the Santa Cruz Mountains and a 9K in Big Basin (in addition to the Danville run in a few weeks). I'll train and I'll let you know how it goes! I'm really excited about it. Maybe next year I'll try for longer runs and I might change my mind about the marathon. Oh I better tell Rachie....

I wish you the best of luck. If running/racing makes you happy, that is what counts!

Distance running just isn't for me. Did you ever see a muscular distance runner? Nope. They don't go hand in hand.

That would be a sight I'd like to see! Yeah, I think that running makes men kind of small. Like, all your muscle needs so much fuel and running takes a lot. Being a woman, I've got plenty of reserves ;)

Curive G- interval training (fartleks?) and speedwork will help you the most, combined with a few days of long, slow mileage per week. At least that's my opinion. Coolrunning.com and RunnersWorld.com are great resources.

I would love to one day be a long distance runner. My grandpa (78 years old) still runs 10Ks and has won a few state titles. Its crazy. My mom used to be a runner too before she left college and gained a lot of weight. It would be such a good way to get your exercise in for the day because runners actually LOVE to run lol.

Quote Of The Day

Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.
