Alligatorob's Diary

Rob -4lb and a total of 75lbs that is so impressive . You must be so so pleased . I know you said you wanted to hit the 160s at some point but you know really you are more than half way there really to a very good healthy you !!!

Congratulations

I know you said you wanted to hit the 160s at some point but you know really you are more than half
Oh, Petal I wish it were so. I originally said 160, and I started at 320, so that's 160 to lose, 75 isn't quite half way. But it is getting close. I don't really know that 160 is the right goal for me, I just looked at one of those BMI calculators and found at about 160 that I became normal and not overweight. I know those calculators are not always very accurate, but its what I had at the time. My real plan is to try and follow your path to a soft landing transition to maintenance while figuring out what real goal weight makes sense for me. I also originally said I thought it would take 2 years and I can't complain about where I am now with that, approaching half way weight loss, but at only about 1/4 of the time is good. I know things will slow a lot as I approach my end goal, so the 2 years is probably still about right, for a WAG anyway. Of course all of that is far in the future, and maybe wishful thinking. We'll see.

.... I originally said 160, and I started at 320, so that's 160 to lose, 75 isn't quite half way. ....
rate of change... this problem screams calculus. i can see two schools of though here, but in either case, would you believe half way between 320 and 160 isn't really 240? i'll have to think about this one, but my math is better in the morning.

Down 4 lbs this week to 245, 75 lbs total loss. It feels good.

Yes LaMa, my wife does most of the cooking, I like to cook, but she doesn't like my cooking much. On the other hand I am fine with hers, she is a good cook, guess I'm not. You are right finding somethings to cook would be a good winter project. Amy, recipes would be welcome, always open to trying something different.
75lbs lost in about 6 months is an amazing accomplishment. Keep at it!!

I have faith in you too, Rob. I think you are amazing. Have you done any investigation yet into a Winter activity?

True enough about the BMI, but it made a very useful Major Goal for me - a marker to reassure myself how far I'd come.
I love the higher mathematics approach to defining what is halfway - I'll be watching eagerly to see what the mathematicians among us put forward as the answer! (But whatever they decide, the long and short is that you have done and are continuing to do, magnificently!)

It was a good day, except for not exercising, we got more snow. I will figure something out. Had an interesting visit from someone I had not seen or heard much from in almost 40 years, she brought her children (about 30 years old I would guess), did not even know they existed. It turned our real nice, I was happy she looked me up, and I think not being so fat made it easier to relax around her.

LaMa, Cate, and Bflat thanks for your faith, sounds stronger than my own, it does help me to hear it from others. Flyer and Amy, y'all got me thinking about the weight loss thing mathematically. So far my rate of loss has been pretty zero order (straight line). That can't last, if it did I would get down to 0 lbs in less than 2 years, and go negative after that, not likely. At some point it has to go more first order asymptotically approaching 160, or whatever the real goal ends up being. The question is when does the transition occur. Enough math, if I just keep eating right and losing weight for now I'll be happy.

Cholula reached its maximum size and influence in about 1000 AD. It was the Olmec-Xicallanca capital and controlled much of central Mexico. By the time Cortez got there it was Aztec controlled and the second largest city in Mexico after Tenochtitlan (Mexico City today). Cholula is located between Mexico City and Puebla, a drive of about an hour and a half east of Mexico City. Cortez got to Cholula before Mexico City and slaughtered its inhabitants, much as he would do later in Mexico City. Cholula still exists today and is one of my favorite places to visit in Mexico, the town has about 50 churches build by Aztec's enslaved to Cortez about 500 years ago, and it is not a large City. The ledgend was that Cortez tried to build a church for every day of the year, not sure it's true, if it is he fell a few short.

To me the most amazing thing in Cholula is the pyramid, the largest in the world, by volume larger than anything in Egypt. However today it mostly looks like a hill. Mexican pyramids were built by building mounds of earth and then placing rock facing. Cortez made his enslaved Aztecs take the stones off of the pyramid and use them to build the churches in town. The first was a small church at the top of the pyramid, today it's the oldest still standing and used European building in the Americas. Mexican archaeologists have excavated into the pyramid and found earlier layers of pyramids that had been covered with earth to expand it. The tunnels are open to the pubic, you can go inside and see some of the earlier pyramids. A great place to visit, but not so well known, pictures of a hill are not as impressive as stone pyramids, probably why it is not well known.

A) Cortez was a miserable excuse for a human being and I secretly hope his reason for building so many churches was that he knew it.
B) Remember the law of diminishing returns. The first 5% (or more) of weightloss (if you are significantly overweight) are going to have a big effect on your physical health while being possible relatively quickly and somewhat easily while the last 5% (or more) of overweight are both really hard to get rid of and inconsequential for your health. They're usually for vanity, which can be a fine reason as long as we're honest with ourselves. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you've already done the part that really makes a difference for your body. Your joints aren't as strained, you're moving more, you don't binge... From a health perspective making sure you stick to your good habits and don't regain is much more important than getting below 200 pounds.

PS: I hope that doesn't sound like I think you shouldn't be trying to lose more weight - any amount of weight you feel will do you good. I really just wanted to point out that the exact end goal doesn't matter nearly as much as the great changes you've already made.

I can’t really add anymore to that than what LaMa said . It was good for me to read it too .
Weight loss will slow as I am proof of it but I think you will hit a spot where you feel great and look well and you will know yourself when that is .

Enough math, if I just keep eating right and losing weight, for now, I'll be happy.
Rob, when you get to the spot where your weight-loss slows down, you will be looking and feeling SO much better & can practise maintenance by losing slowly & making permanent sustainable changes. You have come such a long way & should be very proud of yourself. It can be daunting & moments of self-doubt are normal. We're mere mortals after all.

Thanks LaMa, you are right of course, though for me I think below 200 lbs would be healthier, but how much below I am not sure. And you are right I feel a whole lot better now, and I am sure am healthier than I was. If nothing else my heart is pumping blood to 75 lbs less body.

Oh, and I agree about Cortez, he was a classic mass murderer/conquistador, more successful than most. I doubt he had second thoughts about what he did, I believe the churches were to show dominance and superiority. The thing that always strikes me is that more Native Americans died as a result of European disease than murder, so even without the likes of Cortez the outcome would not have been much better for them. The majority of Mexicans are mestizos, descended from Spanish fathers and Native American mothers. Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA proves it. The story of how that happened probably isn't a happy one.

Thanks Cate, and I am sure you are right, I just need to be patient and see what happens.
Weight loss will slow as I am proof of it
Very true, but I don't see your weight loss as slow, you did very well, you started a lot closer to a "goal" weight than I did, that's the real difference.

It was a good day, Thanksgiving, but we had a quiet day and a pretty non-traditional dinner. No bike riding, but I did get exercise. Spent 4 or 5 hours plowing, shoveling, and otherwise managing snow, and another 4 hours working on my garage shelves project. It snowed another foot last night, we have about 2 feet on the ground now, and its supposed to snow another 6 inches tomorrow and Saturday. More snow than normal for November. I am tired, but before losing the weight I would not have been able to work like this.

In 1010 Thorfinn Karlsefni, an Icelandic explorer attempted to establish a permanent settlement in Vinland (what the Vikings called North America). He followed Leif Eriksson's route. He and his wife, Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, lead a party of 60 men and 5 women who were later followed by 140 men. They occupied the houses built by Leif Eriksson a few years earlier. Gudrid gave birth to a son, Snorri, who was the first European baby born in the Americas. The settlement did not work out and the Vikings soon returned to Iceland.

You mean they actually planned ahead properly and did not take unnecessary risks, enabling them to get home safely even in the face of adversity? Fancy that.

Glad you had a good day!

Rob great work with all the snow clearing and the shelves . I was looking at your food diary and you got a lot more for your calories on Thursday then Friday . You should be aiming for that everyday.
