Skyler's new diary

NO, I am NOT off Paula's diet at all. I am following it but b/c I dont have the protein shakes and b/c I cant stand mayo, I come up short of 1200 calories so I am following it, with more protein, etc and not having "bad" carbs post afternoon....BUT, i am being very conscious to eat more. Maybe even have 1250 or 1300 on days.

I was on some fitness site and it was saying how one lady (whose training schedule seemed similar to mine) was eating 1400 calories, not losing and went to a nutritionist, upped her calories by something like 300-400 and she lost 2 lbs!! I'm not there yet, but as much as I read about NEVER going below 1200 (i know, paula, i'm listening to you) and it is a negative..it totally makes sense...

Now I just need my body to re-adjust...that's what i dont know and is probably person specific, but i wonder how long i've been under-calories and how long it will take for my body to realize i'm not starving it, i was just confused!?

Your Doing Great And I Am Glad You Figured It Out Girlfriend You Will Do Great!

These are good questions, Skyler. I think it would be very individual. I wonder if you could go to nutritionist and they could run some tests so you would know these answers. I am thinking couple of weeks? (just based on personal feeling). Another question for you would be is how much should you increase your food intake? You would want to increase it high enough to encaurage your body to burn more calories, but keep it low enough to prevent gaining any weight, and its hard to know where that balance is.

I believe it. I have a book I'm was reading called the Metabolism breakthrough. It talks about people losing weight by upping their calories. Some of the people were losing weight and were eating around 1600 calories. They were eating more and losing more. I've been meaning to try the recommended meal plans in it. I'll try to locate the book in my pile of diet books to read more up on it and let you know.

Have a great day! I hope you bust through that weight stall.

i posted this in the club section but i wanted to have it here so i remember for myself to remember this very important info (&hopefully helps others as well):

how to prevent starvation mode...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

i read this article from webmd and it clarified some on starvation mode and how important it is to get in all your calories and eat throughout the day..
thought i'd share...

What's interesting with my clients is that a lot of them are on a low-carb diet originally before they work with me. They only may eat usually one meal a day -- dinner. Dinner is usually high protein, low-carb. They will skip breakfast, they skip snacks and they skip lunch. If they skip those meals, unfortunately the body goes into a starvation mode. That is the second most popular diet plan for a lot of people who are overweight -- starving, just not eating. They think they are fat and they don't want to eat. They think they can tough it out in the morning and they stop eating. When you stop eating for more than three hours and 15 to 20 minutes, from what the science shows, the body literally flips a switch on.

"So, by eating every three hours you lower belly fat, you burn two pounds a week and you prevent muscle loss, which keeps your metabolism active. Then you constantly reset the metabolism so you're constantly burning fat."

MODERATOR:
Is that the "starvation protection mechanism" that you talk about?

CRUISE:
That's it. When the switch gets flipped on, this is called the starvation protection mechanism (SPM). This SPM has been literally designed through thousands of years of being a human race. In the past, food wasn't readily available and so your body had to preserve the most precious caloric tissue on the body, which for good or for bad, is fat. Your body is designed to store fat and burn muscle when it goes into starvation mode, which is the opposite if you want to stay slim and trim.

So when that switch is flipped on, when you go more than approximately three hours and 20 minutes without eating, this alarm goes off and the body says "I'm not getting enough food. All right, what am I going to do?" What your body is going to do is precisely what the research shows -- it burns approximately 50 percent of the calories that it needs from muscle. So, actually it's worse than the Atkins plan.

MODERATOR:
How does eating every 3 hours help you lose weight?

CRUISE:
That's the magic -- eating every three hours does a few things:

First, it removes the starvation protection mechanism -- in better words; it turns it off . When the starvation protection mechanism is off, you don't burn muscle, you just burn fat. That's critical.

Second thing that happens -- you lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone that comes from not eating and putting your body in the stress mode with starvation. When you lower cortisol you burn belly fat first. That's brilliant for people that need to lose weight because belly fat is the most dangerous and the most unattractive fat you can have; it sits there and is bothersome.

That's another thing, when you eat every three hours it teaches your body to constantly reset its metabolism. It is almost like a workout for the body every time you eat these meals. There are no bad foods on my plan, just bad portions, I just teach the right portion at the right times. It literally gives your body an eating workout; where your body then is constantly consuming what you need it to consume -- fat. It's working out and revving the metabolism and that's a great thing -- most people aren't aware of that, they don't realize. Now obviously if you sit down and eat the whole house, that's going to stop it up. It's like putting too much gas in the car, it just breaks it down, it's not necessary. Unlike a car, it actually overspills. Your body will just expand and absorb it and try to work with it. You don't want to do that.

Hi Skyler! I totally agree with the article. It's the same thing a personal trainer once told me. He gave me a meal plan where I ate every 3 hours. The pounds were melting off me and it was really weird to me since I felt like a pig since I was literally snacking all day long. Even my friends were commenting that they were shocked I was losing weight since I was always eating. I think I better dig out those old meal plans and get back on it. I was eating around 1400-1500 calories a day.

And you, Sarah, ARE eating every 2-3 hours is you're following my plan. I understand your frustration with trying to stay high enough in calories because of the protein and mayo. Remember to replace the mayo with a healthy fat like nuts or avocado and get that protein in somehow.
Josh (has a degree in nutrition) says that when your body will stop hoarding and start burning again is different for everyone and also depends on how long you were eating too little. Consulting a nutritionist may not be a bad idea. Although, I have great diet plans, I'm not a nutritionist and they know food better than I do. :)

i'm sticking with you, paula!

i am eating your plan....adding almonds/avocados instead of mayo and it comes to around 1200...

i did look back at fitday account and it says i've averaged 1150 for past week, 1100 for past 2 weeks, and only 1050 for the past month (averages). YIKES.

I would add more veggies. You can literally snack on green veggies all day and not have to worry. That way, you'll be getting in some "extra" calories in as well so that you're not so close to the 1200 mark. I'm proud of you though... you're making a real effort and I think that's awesome!

Skyler, I think you can go even higher calorie-wise! Thanks for posting article here, it was interesting! I have to say, I'm very close to eating every 3 hrs, because I get hungry and want to prevent low sugar situations. :) I should pay more attention to this.

Things will def. improve!

Hey Girl Hope Your Doing Good Today! I See You And Kate Have A Little Competition Going There I Am Going To Keep Tabs On This Lol!

hey there

just coming by to see how all is going..im kinda draggin this morning, and needed to come by to drool at our ticker again...:D

hey guys,
wow, today has been flying by and busy busy.

my ankle is feeling better. a little sore and being careful, but i'm off the air cast and was able to do elliptical last night(with the aircast on) and lower level for 40 minutes and upper body strenght training. it felt great. gotta remember that when i feel 'too tired' to exercise or whatever the excuse is...at least i can!!!

yesterday calories came in at about 1300 so im satisfied with that. i weighed in as it is thursday and i'm still at 139. i'm not too frustrated as i had to take 5 days off of cardio and glad i didnt gain or anything...also, after reading so much about the starvation mode, i really didnt expect a loss. (even though i would have enjoyed one!!)

OK, so I changed my ticker due to a change in my goal. I dont think it is feasible with past reflections, etc to reach 128 by the wedding (june 17). If it happens - GREAT - but i dont want to continue to beat myself up over a number. So, my ideal weight based on my height is 125 and that is my new goal. Not sure when I can get there by, but I am sticking to my plan and making sure I eat enough. Nothing is changing here really except that i lowered my end result by 3 lbs and yes, i do wish i could at least see 129 before my wedding, but as paula says "that stupid little box" isn't going to rule how i feel and how i look on my one precious day.
