Risty's Diary (Christina)

Christina (Smurf) lol - Spirulina is an algae. Sounds yummy I know! But it has so many benefits, so many nutrients, I'll post what I found on Wiki. I buy mine through the natural products that my fam and I buy all our vitamins and stuff from. This is just quick info on that company's website:

Benefits of Spirulina:
• Vegetarian source of protein
• Helps cleanse and detoxify
• Excellent source of phytonutrients
• World’s most complete food

Our Spirulina is:
• Certified organic
• Grown in controlled ponds
• Safe, pure, quality assured

This is some info from Wiki about spirulina:

Nutrients and other chemicals
Protein
Spirulina contains an unusually high amount of protein, between 55% and 77% by dry weight, depending upon the source. It is a complete protein,[4] containing all essential amino acids, though with reduced amounts of methionine, cysteine, and lysine when compared to the proteins of meat, eggs, and milk. It is, however, superior to typical plant protein, such as that from legumes.

Essential fatty acids
Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA).

Vitamins
Spirulina contains vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E.[6][7]

Minerals
Spirulina is a rich source of potassium, and also contains calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc.

2Skinny - For the green tea, it depends where I work. If I'm in the O.R. they have a tap that gives boiling water, so I could bring a lidded cup but the last time I tried that it tasted weird. I used my coffee cup and it's metal so I don't know if it's because of either of those reasons that it didn't taste right. lol... However, they do have disposable cups and lids I can try and see if it makes a difference. About the smoothies, I made mine with soy milks, the sugar free stuff. It's only 80 cals per cup and it may be vanilla flavoured, it may not. But it works great and tastes great... I mean your mostly tasted the fruit and/or protein powder anyhow!

I am SO tired, I stayed up until 4 am... why? No reason in particular! I have to be at work in 4 hrs so I think today will be my rest day this week.

Well, I've had a bad couple days... no exercise, going to bed too late so I'm really tired all day (hence the no exercise because of the lack of energy) and to top it off we (hubby and I) went to KFC for lunch today. NOT GOOD! We instantly regretted it, felt so crappy after though.

Plus yesterday had dinner at my grandma's and she always has so much food. It was supposed to be just spaghetti, turned out to be lasagna, chicken and greens, beans in some sort of yummy sauce, polpette, bread, cutletts, wine. I mean, we planned the dinner last minute... like at 12 we told her we'd be there for dinner at 6 so that's why it was only going to be spaghetti! She never ceases to amaze me that's for sure!

I'll try to muster up some energy and get on my bike tonight, but if not, I definitely will tomorrow.

I'm afraid for my weigh in on tues though to be honest. I haven't put the effort into exercise or my food this week like usual and when I put effort I struggle to lose 1 pound... so yeah....

I bought some spirulina today. I took powder before but this time I got caplets.

I make my shakes with soy milk also :) Yum.

Get some good sleep tonight Risty. You'll feel right as rain as soon as you have a couple good nights in a row.

Hey Risty,

I am feeling the exact same thing as you this week, with weak shoulders!! The instructor changed the routine a bit in Step last Thursday to include some punching moves and since then they HURT!! Like you said tho, they will strengthen up if you keep working them. :)

Nice work on keeping up the exercise... never mind the KFC, it was only one meal and it sounds like you're still on track. xx

Question:

Hey guys, I have a question for you. Now this may seem like there's an obvious answer but I'm just having a hard time with it.

The question is, should I get rid of all my crystal light (due to the fact that it has aspartame). The thing is, I have a hard time throwing things away, cause then it's a waste of money. Not only that, but I don't drink it all the time, at most I'll have on packet (one of the singles that go in a water bottle) once a week... AT MOST. Now the question is, if you're having it in that low dose does it even affect you? Should I throw it out? Or should I start with throwing out the flavors that I don't even really care for and just use up the couple that I do like?

My vote is keep the stuff and use it til it's gone. I drink the occasional diet coke when I have pizza. I know aspartame is not good, but I mean I guess it depends when a person removes so many bad things from their diet, personally I need to keep little things to have some pleasure!! On that note, my friend asked me to the club this Thursday and I'm going to drink white wine (red has more sugar) but geez, I really want to keep my social life. Luckily, this friend is healthy and big into green tea. LOL maybe we'll drink green tea in the bar. NOT!

:) Thanks for the opinion. White wine may have less sugar but red wine is better for you! That's why they say you can drink a glass a day of it. I wouldn't go that far, but I forget what exactly is in it that makes it better, but I saw it on Dr. Oz not too long ago.

YAY!!! That settles it. I love red and don't really like white so I'm going to have red. Ya it's got flavanoids and resveratrol which act as anti-oxidants. But the sugar is evil. But I'm gonna have RED. LOL

Hey Risty.

Don't throw away the Crystal Light if you like it. Like you said, you only drink it once a week. It's a hell of a lot better than sugary drinks.

I'm not crazy about plain water, so what I do is put a little all natural juice in a tall plastic cup filled with water with a straw. So I'm staying hydrated with water with a little healthy flavor. In fact, I'm drinking some right now! I like iced coffee and go through the drive thru at Dunkin' Donuts. I save the cups and use them for my drinks. :cheers2:

There are alot worse things :) You've already been drinking drink so there's no point in throwing it away now, use it up - but I don't recommend buying it again. Aspartame isn't good at all - none of the man made sweeteners are.

What I like to do is buy sparkling water and cranberry (or whatever juice I feel like). I measure out 1/4 cup of juice and add it to a glass of sparkling water. Very refreshing - only around 10-40 calories (depending on the amount of juice you add) - no man made sweeteners.

2Skinny, Downtown, Obscure - Thanks for the input. I really didn't want to throw it away because I spent money on it. So I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks using it up isn't too bad. Like I said I only have it once a week at most, so it can't be TOO bad for me.

Downtown & Obscure - Thanks for the tips about juice and water/sparkling water. I may have to try that next. I just don't like watery juice which is why I haven't tried that, but hey, first time for everything!

My philosophy on it is to keep the CL if it helps you drink your total water daily. If you are one of those strange breed that enjoys the normal taste of plain jane water, then more power to you and toss the stuff! :p

Sure, it has some chemicals, but IMO the benefits of the extra water I normally wouldn't consume far outweigh the consequences of the CL.

Andy - I used to absolutely hate water. It would actually make me feel nauseated as stupid as that sounds. However I forced myself to try and drink it and now I lilke it (if it's really really cold!) The CL doesn't really help me drink more water (since I only drink it at most 1 per week) I use it more when I'm wanting something sweet and yummy... so instead of having dessert or whatever, I'll have that. It does the trick and with little calories at that. So I use it to curb sweet cravings, and the odd time I don't feel like cold water, lol.

So last night was interesting. My hubby went to work late at night so I decided to stay up until he got home. So after he left and I got bored of the computer I decided to watch Howl's Moving Castle (a really good anime movie!) and I thought to myself... well, I haven't exercised enough this week and the weight in is tomorrow, so I hopped on my bike for an hour while watching my anime. I felt so good afterwards. I must say that at past 1 am, that's the latest I've ever exercised that's for sure!

Awesome! Way to take advantage of some leisure time and do something really constructive with it! :hurray:

That's fab - I wish I had an exercise bike in my room; it's such a more productive use of time than sitting on the couch (and if it's me, probably snacking hehe)!! xx

GREAT JOB!!! It's nice being to able to work out at home, when you get an urge to you just can - right away...I can't wait till I'm in a bigger place and can set up a home gym!

It all depends on what your goals are. If you want something that burns a lot of calories, the elliptical will burn more calories than the bike. However if your goal is fitness the elliptical doesn't do anything to improve your fitness because you don't do that motion in anything (so it doesn't help you with stairs, biking, walking, running). So yeah, think about what your goals are and then it'll help you decide which to buy :) I bought the bike because I didn't have the room for an elliptical but my goal one day is to own a bike (which I now have), a treadmill and an elliptical!

Andy - Thanks! I was very proud of doing it :D

Sweet_tooth - I find it really useful to have in my living room where I watch all my tv. Sometimes I'll be laying on the couch feeling lazy and he bike will haunt me and so finally I'll get on it and use it during my shows, lol.

Obscure - I also can't wait to have my own house and have a gym as well! Like I said I also want to get a treadmill and elliptical. It's so much more useful having it at home than the gym because to get my ass to the gym... doesn't happen, lol.

I also have crystal light in my pantry that I have been considering tossing since I read more info on how horrible it is for the body. I make a 100 calorie margarita with the lemon crystal light packets, so I will keep it for that purpose until it's gone. I don't plan on buying anymore tho. It's on my list to nix this year! No more disease causing sugar subs for me. Tough choice I know!
