Progress and Setbacks - the Road Ahead

Thanks again Cate and LaMa,

Happy new year to all and hope 2016 treats you well.

Christmas was a great break, one good week, one really bad week and at the end find myself back up a few pounds from the start of the holiday but won't take long to undo the damage. Too many evenings of snacks and drinks and not enough exercise.
The no-meat, no dairy xmas was a little different than past years but now that eating this way has become a habit it really wasn't difficult. Only challenge now is to realize that there are many many things that fit that category that still need to be limited since the primary goal is to be healthier.

That last sentence is spot-on! Glad to hear it turned out well, and good to have you back here :)

Glad to have you back too K&D. Happy new year to you & here's to us reaching our goals, xo Cate

You have a great attitude and in my opinion that is where weight loss begins, outside of taking the necessary action of course. Sounds like you're on point with your assessment over the break, hey, we've all been there and done that. But like you said, it doesn't have to be the end of anything, just climb back up the mountain and keep trekking. You're not too shabby at all! Keep it up!

Thanks dude, Cate and Lama,

Put in a decent week from Monday to Friday but went off the rails again on the weekend. On a positive note, the knowing part isn't the problem, it's the doing part. Ended up 2.5 more pounds due to the horrible weekend but today's a new day.

Goals of the week: get 10,000 steps every day. Clean up the eating
How: Get up and walk around while at work every hour. Top it off with a long walk outside or force myself to get on the treadmill.

Have successfully learned how to not eat meat or dairy while still finding ways to eat way too much processed food.

Do you know the happy herbivore? She does a lot of simple, quick recipes without processed stuff. Warning in advance: she thinks 1200 kcal are enough for a healthy adult of normal weight so she´s got a bit of a screw loose. But hey, adding a few calories is hardly a problem :p

Hadn't heard of that one before LaMa. I will have to check out the happy herbivore but in my case I'll simply eat for two and that will be close to the right number of calories :) My BMR is 2000 calories so no plans to dip below that as a target but always good to get new plant based recipes.

One day of 10,000+ steps completed with much better food choices and no late night snacking.

Made it through day two and had to jump on the treadmill again last night to hit the 10,000 steps. Surprising how few steps I get in the course of my normal office day if I don't make the effort to get up and wander around.

There's an indoor parking garage at work so I've been leaving the desk and walk down a few flights of stairs, walk across the parking garage and walk up through another entrance. I'm guessing anyone watching the video monitors must be wondering why the same guy keeps showing up on different floors and different entrances multiple times a day.

Two days of eating better and two days of 10k steps down. Not quite a habit yet but the scale is showing signs of recovery from the past couple weeks of being off plan.

There´s a German saying: "messen ist wissen" (to measure is to know). That step counter has already proven its worth. Please get a mask of some sort to make it more interesting for the security people! Or, you know, a heavy-looking carpet bag or something ;)

Great job getting steps in! I have trouble when it gets colder outside, that's great that you have an indoor option. I'll expand on LaMa's mask suggestion and suggest stocking up on a variety of masks, to make things even more interesting to anyone who might be watching :)

Smart thinking K&D re the steps to & from the garage when you get a chance. Things like that make such a difference!

LaMa: I like your German saying. May have to replace my default German phrase I used whenever I was asked to say something in German after taking an intro course. "Wie findest du den kase?" As for the Mask/carpet bag, I might be able to get away with a balaclava since it's winter but the carpet bag would probably be pushing my luck.
Oaks: The parking garage is a decent option for me as it lets me get in more stairs but also been wandering around the main floor hallways. Helps to get at least half the days steps in but is no replacement for getting back to running.
Cate: I agree, I've learned a bunch of little tricks over the years to squeeze exercise into a normal day but sadly haven't been consistent in applying them.
Mystic: The holidays were definitely a bigger break than I had intended but glad to be turning a corner again.

So made it 3 for 3 on eating better and getting the 10,000 steps last night. Consistently get home needing to spend 30 minutes on the treadmill. Unfortunately will need to find another place to store towels and coats now that it's getting used again.

I have adjusted to no longer consuming any animal products and getting back on track with choosing the healthier options this leaves. Have been pleasantly surprised how many healthy options are available and how much better I feel. Approaching four months of eating this way and no regrets.

Hope everyone is enjoying their own journey

That´s the best anyone can ask for. But yes, you do now need a non-dairy German saying...

I would kill for instant access to a treadmill. But renting an apartment with downstairs neighbors isn't really conducive to that. ::sigh:: I'm glad to hear yours is getting used!

Thanks Lama and Oaks.
Last week was all about progress not perfection. I did hit the 10,000 steps 7 for 7 but reconfirmed over the weekend that you can definitely out eat the majority of progress. Finished this morning down less than a pound but at least it's stopped the gains.
Have really had to make use of treadmill previously known as towel rack this week to get the steps in. Glad it is still functional and set up in front of a TV so I can jump on for 10-30 minutes at a time and get the steps in while watching a show.

Will go for another week of 10,000 steps and cleaner eating this week and work on the late night snacking.

Maybe look at the calorie count on both your treadmill and the snacks and set goals you must earn before being "allowed" a snack?

Great idea LaMa.
Moderation is a problem for me, lately it's been homemade microwave popcorn (1/4 cup of popcorn in a paper bag) with sea salt and nutritional yeast for cheese like flavor and B12. If one bag is good, three or four bags are great.

Going to start weighing in and tracking daily for the week. Over a two pound drop yesterday likely due to not loading up on salt like I did on Sunday.
Food: Good, Steps: 10,000+ Weight: 244

Awesome that the vegan diet is working out for you! Great job getting back on the treadmill! Keep it up!
