Hi Claudia
My jeans are certainly not the perfect fit that I aspire towards - but frankly - I am amazed to get them zipped up and comfortable enough to wear at all. I am the distance that I am from goal for a reason - and that is that I can see the rolls of fat on me and know the weight that I was when I was last truly comfortable with my figure. Add into the mix this bulge which I will want rectified and my midriff just doesnt stand a chance at the minute.
I have been having fun wearing the jeans - but the main reason for me going missing is that hubby has become addicted to Civilization IV and has been playing this computer game a lot. This keeps me off the computer in the evening and naturally I spend a decent bit of my day out walking and doing the things that need to be done (shopping, making meals etc).
Feel free to say what you feel in my diary - be it defeatist or not. It gives me the chance to discuss your feelings with you. To feel that something fits properly and comfortably is actually a very aggressive goal to aspire towards as your next one. Anyone that has not been at the size that they aspire towards for some years seems to tend to develop some body image issues. Rae (Invariant) and Trevor often discuss this - and you may find it interesting. Basically - we can look one way to the rest of the planet - but feel that we appear differently when we think of how we look.
I know that I have some way to go yet - but people are often surprised when I say how much weight that I want to still lose. I do not let them divert me because I know that I am aiming for a healthy BMI and I know that I was much slimmer than this when I was young. I still cannot fit into my wedding ring and I have some clothes from my youth that would not come close to fastening. My mother agrees that I am chubby compared to what I was and the rest of the family.
The point is that we could lose weight down to an underweight BMI and not feel comfortable with ourselves - anything that requires a judgement call can involve interpretation errors.
We all like to have milestones which involve fitting into things properly and comfortably - but I think that it is very important to have other more quantifiable milestones too. That way - as you lose weight you achieve those without your brain getting a chance to convince you that you havent when you have.
I believe in lots of milestones. We all go for weight milestones - they are so simple - you stand on the scales and when it gives a number you know that you have lost so much weight. The issue is obviously one of having realistic expectations and understanding natural fluctuations.
Measurements - a lot of people get a lot from measurements. I do both but do not really trust that the tapemeasure is uniformly taught.
I like things like bra sizes - because I dont just guess my size and go to a shop - buy that size and see if it goes on. I go to a bra shop and get a fitting. That way someone else works out what size is the one that gives a perfect fit for me. I find that you really dont pay much extra and get a bra that you are much happier with. It is only when you decide to buy that you find out which size you now are. I find that very illuminating.
You are only 10 pounds away from the goal on your ticker. I am convinced that you can and will achieve it by controlling your food intake with a new food plan and making sure that you exercise regularly and are not diverted from it. You weigh less than me and are probably taller than my 5ft3. I am sure that you will have a much lower BMI than I have. If it helps to focus you - name a BMI or weight and I will race you to it. You should have a head start on weight and BMI and you know that I am deep into a long term project. That should go some way to balance against your recent plateau on your old food plan. If you pick BMI - add it to your ticker.
Remind yourself of Tammy's diary from the start of the year (page 49). She was bemoaning the fact that she had spent much of the past year losing and gaining again the same 15 pounds. She made this entry on 1st January.

I remember that I told her the following:
Do not focus on the 15 pound loop concept. They are just a random bunch of past weights. A list of our weights across the year as a whole is no more relevant than our start weight. They are historical facts and nothing more. We can demonstrate to ourselves by comparing our start weight and our current weight that we know what to do to lose weight effectively.
The only real weights to concern yourself with are your weights across the past month or so (so you can deduce the recently acquired splurge pounds from over Christmas) and your weight today. Just before Christmas you were in the 170s and happy with your recent progress. Splurge pounds will be very quickly lost now that you are back on track. Tyly verified this fact. You are now back on track. The picture is going to look a lot better very soon.
Continue as you are doing.
Tammy updated her diary yesterday to show that she now weighs 154 pounds and has just passed her hundred pounds lost milestone. We can all look at a recent pattern - but if we let it convince us that we cannot succeed then it reduces our chance of success dramatically.
Believe that you can do it this time. Do not be diverted by thoughts of recent weight loss disappointment.
Take care
Love
Margaret
