Omega's journey

Omega, I went from a size 8 to 6 when I started lifting and zumba. Love how it has shaken up my routine without injury or too much expense.

Dropping in on a salsa class next week to see how I get on w/ that. :)

Thought that it was time to pop into my diary with a little update.

Thanks for popping by Cate and Bellyoff.
Thanks for voting for my zumba and salsa classes... They really are excellent exercise... The good news is the teacher made it into the finals in three of the six categories and will be going to London for the awards ceremony.

check it out - the classes I go to are at "Zumba Boys North East/SalSeduce".

We are really crossing our fingers that he may get an award... He really deserves it.

The teacher is organising a special two hour zumba event for tomorrow - it should be excellent. I cannot wait.

Not only are my three normal zumba instructors going to be there (Xris/Chris and Riccardo of ZBNE and Klaire who I do a zumba session with on thursday) but Diane Youdale has recently become a zumba instructor so she can do a set...

Diane Youdale actually sometimes comes along for some exercise to our zumba lessons and was there on Wednesday night. She was better known as the gladiator Jet.

I was pretty pleased as she was stood next to me in the room when we exercised and I managed to more or less keep up with her a lot of the time... She did some very nice cumbia machete moves - pointing her left foot forward on the back tap with the right foot - which is a version of the machete which I do not do - but I'm sure that I did some jumps that she missed... :) She is after all 13 years younger than me and a fitness legend so I was pretty pleased not to be danced right off the floor...

I am currenly doing a lot of zumba and more salsa than ever before... It is certainly a fun way to try to keep fit.

My exercise levels are going really well. Dancing is such a wonderful form of exercise...

If my food control was as good as my exercise levels I would be fading away... I havent got a weight problem really - but I am certainly not losing weight at the minute despite all the exercise I am currently doing...

If you can build a healthy food plan at the right calorie level and stick to it - it really makes an enormous difference to any project.

Yeah I've had the same sort of experience: the exercise is now ingrained into my life, and I couldn't dream of going without it. But it's still way too easy to slip up on the calories.

I must be doing pretty well though. This last 40 to 50 pounds will be the hard part.

You are doing brilliantly MrVee - I can see it all on your ticker.

Food control is something that I believe people like us (formerly BIG) always have to work at... It never gets anywhere like as easy as exercise... I have no idea what it is like for people who have never had a serious weight problem...

Friday night we ate out with friends - so that was me and three other people at different levels of obesity - two would definitely be morbidly obese... I skipped the starter (which they all ate and opted for chapatis instead of naan - but when you say that you say it all... I otherwise didnt select food particularly wisely... I ate just as large a main course... I kept on eating until my plates were empty even though it made me uncomfortably full... The fact that I was uncomfortable didnt cause me to stop eating though... I couldnt face any food until about 12:30 Saturday when I had fruit and yoghurt... I got hungry and it was a dash to have something quickly enough that it wouldnt be heavy on me during the zumba party (which was truly zumbalievable - all my friends are still raving about it on FB). Normally we do zumba at 11am - but we got there about 1:40pm for a 2pm start... LOL they were playing the music so our gang started dancing early as we know all the moves :) :) :)

Unfortunately Rod is having a gout attack today - so I will probably go to double zumba by myself tomorrow... I hope that he doesnt miss the Halloween parties this week. Two of my salsa groups are having Halloween parties - Salseduce is on Tuesday and X-Salsa is on Wednesday...

I would definitely burn a heap of calories on Saturday... There are no two ways about that... LOL I even did my normal salsa lesson in the morning...

All this talk of Zumba makes me want to try it out. There is a senior center nearby that has Zumba Gold every Wed afternoon. I just might try it. I know I could not do regular Zumba right now at my age and with my arthritis. But I think maybe I could handle Zumba Gold. They have pictures online and most of the ladies appear to be my age, late 60's. I will fit right in! My only fear is that they all know the steps already and I will not be able to keep up. I guess I will never know until I try it.

Thanks to you both for visiting my diary.

Goal2Bhealthy - I would certainly encourage you to try zumba... Don't worry if other people already know all the steps... They might!!! I tell new people not to feel spooked by the way we all know the steps... In our case - it tends to be because so many of us are addicted that we get so much practice... We all remember how it felt at first... It doesnt mean that we never make mistakes - it is less often than it was at first... We introduce new tracks all the time - so there are tracks where we have all forgotten what the original choreography was... We all rack our brains about what came next... We all get mental blocks too - where we cannot remember what comes next in something that we have been regularly dancing... The teacher does this too and he invented the choreography...

All forms of dance can be quite a memory test... It is fun though and at the end of the day it doesnt matter whether you do what you originally intended or not... My husband and I spent an hour this morning working on 13 bars of salsa dancing... There are basically 6 steps to a bar - so that is 78 steps... It took the entire hour and we will practise it again and struggle to remember what comes next and how to do it... We recorded ourselves walking through the steps and this will really help... I look back at my childhood and the dance exams that I did with never the option of filming a step walk-through to help learn a dance sequence... LOL I swear that it encouraged me to learn the terminology so I could write it down... I am useless at salsa terminology compared to the more traditional latin dances...

It doesnt matter if you keep up either... The key thing is that you enjoy the music and enjoy moving around to it... Feel free to modify the moves and use as a suggestion not an instruction...

A friend of mine posted the following in FB just last week.

I am currently doing tons of exercise...
My current exercise schedule has 6hrs zumba, 1hr aerobics and salsa on 4 or 5 days a week plus some walking...

My food control isnt nearly as good... I tend to be eating in a too relaxed way... Too easily tempted to eat things that I would be better off without... If I wasnt doing as much exercise - I hate to think how much weight I would be gaining...

Hopefully - I will get that control back soon and allow myself to make some progress...

I seem to have spent the past month leaping from one excuse to another... I had cold, then Rod was off work sick and wanting comfort food...

Its a tough time... At the minute I am hosting geriatric parties like it is going out of style... My parents will celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary tomorrow (11th) and lots of pensioners are coming for a party... The house is full of party food... Various cousins were here today... Some other cousins came for a few days over the past week too... The card is due to arrive from the Queen tomorrow and that will be an event in itself... Then (as if that wasnt enough) my father will celebrate his 96th birthday on Wednesday (13th)... More relatives are coming then...

If anyone is in the mood for party food - our house is full of it...

Many thanks to everyone that voted for the zumba and salsa classes that I go to... My teacher is a finalist and he will be going to London for the awards ceremony to see if he wins...

Hey Omega - so nice to see that you are still active on this page!! Thanks for stopping by my diary! Have a good week! x
