You should have asked the lady for her recipe. She might have told you her secret. Having said that - then you would be having problems resisting your own cooking.

You know you can go to any restaraunt over there and they will gladly give you the list of ingrediants but not the measurements. I have even run into that problem with some cookbooks that I have from Shipshewana. Guess it is their way of keeping it so good. And you are right I would have been WAY larger if I knew how to cook all that delicious food.

You will have to make sure that when you and Kimberly go on this jaunt - she has not set calorie counting in a challenge.
Now that would be a hoot! Does that comment have something to do with this weeks challenge and how you don't like to count your cals? LOL

I cannot say that I see a point to life without electricity if it is available (I understand that Amish people have their own spin on these things). The village in Greece did not get electricity until the 1970s. A lot of our friends spent their childhood with no electricity. My friend Maria says that it was nicer because you enjoyed the stars more. They tell us how they all crowded around when the first person bought a generator and hooked it up.

I completely agree with you on the electricity thing.
I can see how they think that it could corrupt their way of life. At least the honest ones.
With that said listen to this:
We once lived across the road from some people who were having a duplex built next to their house.
I went to go outside and saw that there was an extension cord running from my house to across the road. Well of course I unplugged it.
Shortly there after the doorbell rings and there is an Amish man (early 20's) standing there. All dressed in his typical style of dress.
And he is MAD at me! I mean MAD!!! He wants to know why I unplugged the cord. I told him it wasn't my house that he was building and that I didn't think that I should be footing his electricity bill.
At this point he says some chosen words that I shall not repeat and stomps away.
Apparently he forgot to bring his generators with him and when asked if he could plug into the house next to the duplex was told no for the same reasons.
I thought it was extremely rude to say the least.
Besides that the cost of all his construction equipment would have sent my electric bill thru the roof.
Later on that day the mans boss came over and apologized for what happened and what was said to me.
Apparently the younger guy had been excommunicated from the Amish community for his past behaviors and the older guy was giving him a chance to "make up for his wrongs".
I never did see him over there again after that.

THANK YOU!!!

Im so made up obviously. You are doing so well too margaret and you are such an insparation!

Everytime I look at your ticker your BMI seams to be lower; it will be below 25 before you know it. Thanks again =D

Marg, I LOVE how you're so thorough with your calculations. You put me to shame, you really do. All I ever do is calculate the intake TOTAL not where it comes from.

I LOVE reading all of your lists. And it always sounds like you're eating enough to never be hungry. It would be an issue for me, I think, if I didn't eat every ninety minutes. I'm very active and that has a lot to do with it.

I hope you're having a good Tuesday!! ((big hugs))

Well HELLO friend!! I have to say I'm not amazed a bit by your ticker going down again, I will say that I'M SO VERY HAPPY for you!! you earn every pound you lose, and if I didn't see weight drop off you, then I would get concerned. You have lost a whole person now, can you believe that?

Just about one of me you lost. LOL LOL I bet you look nothing at all this month, from this month last year, can you even believe your own mirror right now?? WOW I would be putting on clothes and prancing around like a little school girl if I lost that much weight, your a true, true inspiration, and I hope to one day be at that point in my weight loss venture too.

CONGRATS so far, and may you have another weight losing week!!

HUGS:grouphug:

Thanks for visiting me. I hope that you are all having a great day.

Dawn

I would never dream of making a fuss about Kimberly making me count my calories. As luck would have it - I would have probably counted my calories for two of the days this week as I was reformatting my food plan from last Wednesday.

No wonder that lad had been excommunicated. That was really bad behaviour. You would be livid when that whole incident happened. The sad thing is that when people act badly it reflects on their whole community. I think that we can deduce that the lad's excommunication was not lifted - or if it had been it was reinstated.

Becky

I cannot believe what excellent weight loss you are getting. You are going to be so slim when you start college in September. No-one will ever guess that you had been cuddly. All our BMIs are racing down together.

Rae

To be fair - I dont normally bother with what my food consists of - all I do is stick to the same basic food pattern and change the main meal. If I need something extra I have something healthy. It means that I never have to bother with counting my calories or anything - I am really lazy. Also I find that I am apt to decide that I have failed if I go over the magic calorie number and get too despondent.

Eating every 90 minutes is a good idea. Some days I seem to be eating all the time when I am not out walking. I seem to nibble food non-stop.

Kim

Sometimes the fact that I weigh a lot less than I did seems very surreal. It is hard to explain. Sometimes it feels like there are two me's. A fat me and a thin me. Although I am no-where near goal I have lost enough weight that in comparison I feel quite thin. Then I forget and try on clothes and am surprised that they are way too big for me.

I think that the whole psychology associated with excessive weight loss is quite complex. We all develop a mental picture of ourselves and that is not easy to change in either direction.

I am certainly visibly slimmer than I was - but the camera never seems to do me justice. I dont like pictures of myself that make me look my age or size. I suppose that has its roots in the fact that I was in my mid twenties the last time that I was this size and that was during a rapid weight increase. I cannot really properly remember being this size.

It is true - I have lost a whole person. I have loose skin - but sometimes I look at it and think that I deserve to have more loose skin because I cannot see how you could stretch it to cover a whole person. For a laugh I have just put my weight loss and height into a BMI calculator. I have lost a person with a BMI of 23.9. That person is not even skinny - although "normal" she is not far from overweight!!!! I am pretty pleased with my weight loss so far. I am absolutely determined to get there.

I hope that you have a great weight losing week too. I wish that I was getting the excellent results in inches that you get.

Angel

Thanks. My day has been pretty good. No classes at the adult education centre because of half term. I toyed with going for the free aqua lesson yesterday - but could not face stripping off and getting wet on a cold day. Too much of a wimp!

Take care

I'm sure that rude Amish guy remained banned. It is not hard to get "shunned" in the first place, and not easy to have the shun removed. Nearly all the Amish I have ever met have been very pleasant and friendly.

One good thing about Amish cooking is that they go easy on the sugar, and generally use a lot of natural foods. Lard and butter, however, are natural..:D

I promise not to meet up with Bella during a calorie counting week of a challenge. :D I would fail. In fact, it would be best if it was a day in between challenges. :reddevil:

Margaret, I don't blame you for not wanting to go swimming in cold weather--even if it is indoors...lol. I know Bella does it all the time, though. :)

I think this change in your diet is having good results. Any constipation issues?

Hi Kimberly

I intended to go to the aqua on Monday - but I am not as tough as Dawn. I got my things ready, found the ticket and timetable and looked at the frost on the grass outside and just couldnt face getting wet and doing the main of my walk after swimming.

If the food is as good as you say - maybe a week just before a challenge starts would be the best for you to meet up. Then if you put on weight it would give you a head start if it came back off straight away. See how devious I can be!

I must admit that I am quite pleased with my weight loss this week. I think that the change is helping that. I always knew that my raisins were a weightloss liability though.

No constipation issues as yet. I am keeping a very close watch on the toilet side of things. I know that if I get that problem the raisins resolve the pain quicker than a laxative. I made my fibre content pretty much through the roof. The theory is that I have the option to reduce it if I need to cut things back. I did my calorie calculations quite thoroughly up front and made what I thought I would want pretty much the minimum value (going for a multiplier that made sense to me for weight loss fairly deep into a project). I have been pretty accurate so far. This means that I have approximately a 1000 calorie buffer. If I get issues you will probably see me going vastly over into that buffer with raisins.

Take care

Trust me Margaret I am not nearly as tough as you guys think.
It is soooo cold here that if given the choice I wouldn't be going swimming either. But for me to go to all my classes free and to get my membership at a greatly reduced rate I have to swim.
I am quite sure that once the weather warms up it won't be so bad for either of us. In fact it will most likely be a welcome reprieve from the heat.
Hope you have a great day tomorrow (or I guess at this point it would be today for you).
Ciao

I see you've hit another new low today--159.2! :hurray: I think you'll have a good loss for the week.

Well, I hope the bathroom issues do not arise. :)

Your devious idea regarding Amish food and challenges sounds like a winner. :D

HAPPY TLD! :hurray:

Have you told H about TLD? I'm sure he'd be intrigued..lol.

Thanks for visiting.

Dawn

I can understand how the free classes entice you to swim - but I am such a wimp I am not sure if anything could make me swim in the morning in this weather (and I know that your weather is a million times worse than ours - all we have is coldness, a frosty white tinge to the grass in the morning and morning fog). The idea of not getting properly dried off after swimming (I never do) and then walking 5.5 miles (to complete my morning walk) before going home for a break makes me cringe. The more that I think about it I cannot see myself doing it this Friday either. I do not see me joining the first gym because I feel this way. The second more expensive gym is so much more civilised (and I do like the look of their classes) that I have to say that I lean towards persuading hubby that the extra expenditure is justified. They do aqua there too so I would get everything that the other place offers and so much more.

Kimberly

It was indeed another new low on Tuesday. I am intrigued to see what my weight will be today when I get back from my walk.
edit
back from walk - new low 11st 4.4 or 158.4 pounds.

I just hope that I do not start gaining before tomorrow (which I can count for the challenge). I have just been checking my records - today is day 19 on my cycle - last month I started gaining after day 22 and the month before after day 20. I think that it is fair to deduce that I will start gaining some day soon.

Happy TLD to you too!

I havent mentioned TLD here. I think that hubby would just think it all very funny because he more than anyone knows how VERY heterosexual I am. I suspect that goes for all our husbands really. What does your hubby make of it?

Take care

Omega, you have lost one me!!!! And I am nowhere near skinny! Imagine how much lighter you walk now! Just incredible!
I have a question and I hope it is not too personal: do you have extraskin??
I have seen on TV people who lose that much weight often have a lot of lose skin and I always wondered if that always happens or just if you have a surgical weight loss, because they don't do as much exercise etc...

If you do not want to answer that is fine, was just plain old curiosity.

As always you are an inspiration, when walking through Sicily and being so tired I just thought: girl, Margaret walks more than that any given day! and I was immediately motivated to walk some more!
Have a great day, Camy

hey another low!! you are soo going to see that 154 mark veey soon!!! :hurray:

have another good day-i'm sure you don't need another class to go to if you don't want.but very soon you will be stripping off and getting into that water!!!

;-)

Congrats on another low, Marg!! I'm uberly happy for you!

It's great that you don't seem to be having any constipation issues as of yet. Are you assuming then that it's the fiber that's regulating you? If I eat a lot of cereal (which I ususally do) I never seem to have digestive problems. I attribute it to the flax/fiber in the bowls.

I hope after your walk you can report a good number staring you back from that scale!!

Thanks for visiting.

Camy

I do have some loose skin - and I have quite a bit of fat still. The thing is that I have a very small frame so still have a big "spare tyre" of fat. The fact is that only time will tell how much of that spare tyre will remain when I lose my fat. My upper arms have reduced nicely and display no loose skin - I do some exercise for them every day involving light weights. My thighs have some loose skin - this really only is obvious if I lift my leg at right angles - you can see a fold of skin hang down. They are not a major concern because - how often do we need to lift our bare legs at right-angles when over a certain age? My tummy - as I have said has yet to be seen - I do have quite a lot of stretch marks there. My boobs are the worst bit of me - they were very large and although the content has reduced the skin has not really reduced such that I have noticed. This means that it is a bit like having a pair of bags that are about a quarter full hanging down. My bra size has changed and the back measurement has reduced quite dramatically while the cup size has increased. The cups are mainly filled with my bundled up loose skin. Only time will tell what happens when all my surplus is gone. They say that we should see what everything is like 2 years after finishing losing weight before considering options. I know that my age (48) does not help my skin's elasticity.

When you consider the size of the imaginary person under my skin with me I think that I would have expected to have more loose skin than I currently have.

I have seen those same television programs and currently do not know whether I would consider surgery or not. It really depends how things continue from here.

I am pleased that you did a good bit of walking in Sicily. It is great for your health and I am sure that you enjoyed the lovely surroundings there.

Angel

Yes - another new low 11st 4.4 pounds after my walk - so I am 4.4 pounds from our next milestone. Hopefully we will both see it very soon. I was just telling Kimberly - I will probably start retaining water fairly soon - so I am just hoping that I can drop a little bit more before my weight loss finishes pretty much for February.

I think that my problem with swimming in England is that it doesnt really compare to swimming on Rhodes.

Rae

Thanks - I thought that I would get a new low (158.4 pounds now) based that I got a slight new low when I weighed before my walk. I tend to weigh both before and after. The after weight is normally less - unless I start eating and drinking while I am out. I make a note of the "before" weight but overwrite it if I get a better one later. I only have one official weight for each day.

Cereal never guarantees anything for my digestion - and I have been known to get constipated while eating quite a bit of fibre. I actually think that there is a bit of a problem there. Last summer I was getting quite a lot of problems and the doctor prescribed tablets that they give to stomach ulcers and similar problems. The problems persisted and was never properly diagnosed. Purely by chance I realised that laxatives improved matters and then started eating raisins every day because I had no intention of taking laxatives every day. My doctor agrees that my waist is a very odd shape and when this fact is combined with the digestive issues that I was having - it is possible that it is all connected together. I am now awaiting an ultrasound check to try and sort out what is going on in there.

I am currently eating a LOT of fibre (between cereal, fruit and veg) so am sure that is what is keeping me right. I never had any problems in that area until last June.

Take care

Nice job on the new low!! You seem to be having a very good week. :hurray: *keeping my fingers crossed for a good weigh in Thursday* Even though it means you'll move ahead of me in the challenge. :p

I'm glad the toilet issues have not been a problem so far. I know how exasperating that can be.

I haven't told my H about TLD b/c he wouldn't think it was funny--just silly and stupid..lol. :sifone:

Margaret!

Just stopping by to say hi! I still cant get over how much detail you go into with your lifestyle change! I wish i had the patience to write it all down!

Have a lovely day,
Trevor

Hello Margaret!!
Hey I meant to ask you, how tall are you?? 158 is small in my book, but I guess it depends on your height, for me at 5.6 1/2 that would be PERFECT on my frame, and I would really, really happy to hit that mark right now. Almost there, but those last stubborn 15-20 keep holding on, darn it! LOL LOL I'm fine with it, eventually it has to go, I can't keep working out and see no changes that would be odd. LOL LOL
