My journey to good health

It boggles the mind to think about how many calories you used to eat before counting, right? It's insane. I went out to dinner last night with my sister and had salmon with broccoli. I watched her eat rib tips, fries, a bread roll and corn on the cob, and knew that the total calories of her meal just may equal the number of calories I eat in a day. The average person really just doesn't think about that or realize... O.O So many calories.

That's why I always go to a restaurant's website and look for nutrition information first... and try not to go to those restaurants that don't offer it. It is SO EASY to eat way more calories than you realize when you eat out because the everyday restaurant doesn't care about healthy eating... they care about pleasing taste-buds which generally equals more calories. I find that if I see how many calories are in the food offered before I go there I will be much better able to make the best choice possible.

You are totally right! One of my favorite breakfasts (from a restaurant) is this bowl with tons of hashbrown potatoes (not homemade), tons of cheese, eggs (i would always get egg whites though), hollandaise sauce, chorizo sausage, tomatoes, and green onion. It came with 2 slices of toast as well, that i would put jam on. It was probably 2000 calories, at the lowest. It would keep me full for half the day, but i would be hungry again by supper.

Unfortunately not too many restaurants here offer calorie info on their website :( Other then bigger chains like chili's or boston pizza that is. All I can do is to make the best choices possible and try to remember to ask for unbuttered toast etc.

On another note, i am feeling rather ill right now. I just went for another 45 minute walk with a friend, which was fantastic, but I now feel sick (was also feeling sick before the walk). So i'm going to go lay down and hope it goes away.

That is so unfortunate. :( Silly Canadian restaurants, it's time to cater to the health-conscious consumer! :p

I'm so sorry you're not feeling well! Get better soon and have a good rest.

So today as i believe i already wrote, i went for a 45 minute walk in the morning outside (some uphill portions). I think my eating was good today, so I am happy.

Thank you so much !!! Your post means alot to me.

I feel the necessity to be very exact right now in my calorie counting.

I added on 115 g of cherries, and 2 more ryvitas to my calorie count, taking me to 1972 calories for the day. :) I was ravenous!

That's great! ...being exact can lead to a wonderful and calculated journey! :) You goooooO!!! You deserve success!!! You are planning for it and that's what you'll get!!

I feel like a big, fat, failure right now i'm afraid. We had sushi for supper from a great local place here, and ordered the usual 3 types of rolls we get. I added the rolls onto my calorie counter site, and the calories are fine (i figure it is accurate enough since i pretty much got the kind of rolls we order). However i am upset about the soy sauce i ate. I love soy sauce with sushi, and i don't even know for sure how much i had, but estimated 3 tbsp, which is 2000 mg sodium :( Sigh. I hope this doesn't cause too much of a sharp increase in weight. I am going to try to drink lots of water to counteract it. Also didn't get to the gym tonight.

here is my food diary:

You'll be okay from the soy sauce. No point in beating yourself up about it now, right!? :) Just like you said, lots of water! :) And hot tea...hmm.... Within a few days max it'll be out.

I love sushi too!! :drool5:!!! If just they didn't have all these yummy sauces! LOL!!

Just don't step on the scale for a couple days and you won't even notice the change from salt. Sweating during exercise releases a lot of salt too so bust it out and make sure to water, water, water! Don't get down you are doing so good!! Keep it up!!

Thank you both so much ! I couldn't help it, i weighed myself this morning, and only 0.4 lbs higher then the weight i was yesterday, so no big deal at all (i am down from what my weight says on the site here, will officially weigh in tomorrow).

:)

That just tells me that i must have been having way more salt than that before, even though it is alot! Wow! :lurk5:

Good gracious, that's a lot of sodium. I have not had sushi since I began this but I can't imagine having sushi without soy sauce, but I suppose I will have no choice. You could always give low sodium soy sauce a try, though. I've heard of it so it definitely exists!

Yeah, you can find a lot of salt in surprising places. Do you know what I don't think I could ever consciously eat? Pretzels. Look closely at a pretzel sometime. They're covered in big salty crystals. And aren't pretzels supposed to be the healthy snack alternative? I can't imagine how. Dough + Salt = Healthy?

I'm glad you didn't gain too much because of the soy sauce fiasco. :)

Thank you! :) Believe it or not, I was using "VH Low Sodium Soy Sauce". 1 tbsp = 700 mg salt. yep. So even low sodium sauce is bad.

Yeah salt is everywhere for sure! I don't like pretzels with tons of salt either, yuck...

You are smokin this weight loss thing! Well done.

Sodium Shmodium! Don't worry bout it. You did great!

And now that you know the contents in soy sauce, you'll adjust for next time.

Have a great nite!

That's just... terrible. :eek2: I started tracking my sodium today and it's a scary, sodium-filled world of food out there. I never realized how salty cheese is. I thought Feta was my friend. Feta is most definitely not my friend.

Thank you so much!! Yes i'll definitely adjust it. I'm thinking i'll take a tbsp of soy sauce and use my fork (yes i use a fork to eat my sushi!) to spread a tiny bit on the sushi...that way i'll use way less :)

Thanks! :)

That is so so true. I love cheese, but i have drastically cut back on my cheese intake since july 1. It can definitely have alot of sodium in it, and fat too (although i buy low fat cheese).

Sodium is really in everything. The thing that surprised me the most was milk, because really if anything milk is a bit sweet (kinda), not salty. So that was strange to me.
