Marsia, I just bought a bike! I went yesterday and it was sooo fun! But I am not burning many cals??? I only burned 200. maybe I am going too slow... I biked 5.5 miles. Oh well, I don't care that much. It was still super fun.
Congrats on your weight loss! It's an incredible thing since it's just so darn hard to lose weight!
Your trip sounds like a dream ...
Thanks Jenni! I am so happy I found something that could work for me long-term and that I can do without fighting cravings!
Same with me with the bike so far. I burn about 200 calories a half hour of biking on relatively flat ground and about 225 on hilly ground because I coasted a lot on the downhills. With the My Fitness Pal exercise estimator, I put that I did an hour of light bike riding at 10-12 mph and it said that I burned 526 calories. So that's not a lot more than the Fitbit estimated for that day (which was my first day off-roading through the woods on trails) where it said I burned 448 calories. I did coast downhill a lot and had to go slow so my daughter with shorter legs and a littler bike than me could keep up. I am looking at the report for that exercise activity period now and it shows the average heart rate, # of minutes in cardio mode, and # of minutes in fat burn mode. I also notice it didn't count it as any steps taken, but it did count it as active minutes. It shows that I burned an average of 8 calories a minute. So I agree, it must measure how high you get your heart rate and how far you go.
I just got the Fitbit and it is still a mystery to me how it measures things. For example, last night I wanted to go to bed, but needed around 1,000 steps to reach the 10,000 step goal, so I ran up and down my steps (16 of them) about 15 times (so that's about 480 steps) but it recorded around 1,000 steps and buzzed that I met my goal for the day. I wonder if it records the elevated heart rate and shows it as more "steps" than a normal walking pace? One thing I notice is that the greater the range of motion for an activity, the more calories it tends to burn because you are working out all your muscles at once instead of a select few. Like stair stepper doesn't burn anywhere near the calories as jogging.
But anyway, biking is really fun, so I don't care that much about the number of calories burned. I know we will slowly get to the point where we'll buy mountain bikes and get so biking is a real workout, and in the mean time, it does burn a fair amount of calories for how fun it is!
I am savoring researching things to do on the trip! We have been to Kauai before and there is just so much to do there as far as hiking and exploring that we barely scratched the surface last time. So really looking forward to it. It is up there on the list of most amazing places I have ever been!
Good luck with the biking! I think as we get stronger biking legs, the calories will burn right off!!
