Journey, Not A Destination

BTW I see where you're coming from on this - it's the same aversion I have to the people who've lost 50lbs and now consider themselves experts on the subject of weight loss... and what worked for them -- they assume will work for everyone else..

That's really the heart of where I'm coming from. There's a big difference between sharing experience (which is a valuable thing) and lecturing/educating.

In the former you're wearing the wisdom hat. In the other you're wearing the expert hat.

I'm ot sure I"m any better... I'm not an expert - this I know, I have a lot to learn and I'm trying to learn it -and apply it... but I'd also like to think that me sharing my experience and offering up what worked for me has some value...

Certainly does, see above.

It's really about how you present the information I suppose.

Add this to the fact that a few (one) rubs me the wrong way. I hate the idea that people think I'm infallible when it comes to nutrition and fitness information.... I really do. There's something I always want to avoid and that's 'guru-status.' And the fact of the matter is I'm learning each and every day.

That said though, having someone with 'experience' talk to an 'expert' as if the expert is a dummy is what rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure it happens in all fields....

It's just something that at first confused me. I was like, "can they be serious?" Now it's like a rash or irritation.

I guess if someone who actually knows his/her stuff isn't respected by the experienced individual, this is the byproduct.

I was really just blowing off some steam. :)

There was a post by someone yesterday, who shall remain nameless, who was trying to convince someone else that weight lifting had no value when it came to losing weight -that it should be all cardio all the time... and when I see comments like that - it jsut makes me want to scream and thro wthings -the person that the advice was being given to - was doing things right -and now was beginning to doubt their efforts... I'm sure the person offereing the advice didn't mean any harm by it - becuase all cardio all the time seemed to work for them - It was just bad advice..

Ya, that's bad.

I'm sure I've dished out some bad advice during my tenure on this forum.. but at the time -i wasn't aware that it was bad...

As have I, I'm sure.

The low price of $FREE.99...

Start>All Programs>Windows Movie Maker (Should not be in a sub-folder).

Hahaha, perfect. I'll toy around with this tonight and see if it's any better than what I'm currently using.

Then, after a nights worth of experience with the program and the successful completion of a few videos, I'll go onto computer tech forums and 'teach' people my wisdom.

lol

that's one of the things that irritates me the most about having reputation and even post count visible.. like reputation or post count (except yours punkin) means the person's advice has more value...

Heh - the MSDN forums can be scary places - these people don't see sunlght too often - they're a little mean at times:D especially hiding behind a keyboard :D

Heh, I feel like I'm that person you're talking about (not specifically, unless I actually am and that really sucks). I try to give advice when I can but always try to stick to sound information. Sometimes I try to go out of my element and give information about things I've researched and most recently practiced (what comes to mind, macronutrients and their effects on ketosis diet plans vs. LCD plans).

I feel that at times, when my friends come to me, I feel awkward giving advice, not because I might be wrong, but because it might not be right for them. And since I am not a professional I feel even worse giving out advice and trying to pass it as gospel... and you're right, a 100 pound weight loss doesn't make me an expert at weight-loss, it makes me an expert at "listening" to my body. Great post mal...

Is there a feature on vbulletin that allows post count to be hidden?

Not per member, but across the board and it's not something you can easily check off as an admin, you need to actually edit PHP files and a template. Kind of a pain in the ass...

Haha, I'm not saying you're right or wrong... but they're probably no worse off had they obtained the advice from your ordinary professional in the sense of personal trainers, truthfully.

Again, I'm all about sharing experience. And if you've done some research, by all means, share it. That really wasn't my point though.

I guess it's sort of an attitude some have where they feel they have all the answers... as if they've worked with dozens of different types of people successfully and understand the way the body works.

In reality, they haven't the slightest clue.

They read 1, maybe 5 books, not texts mind you, never looked at a lick of research in their life, and only have a foot to stand on in terms of their own experience.

Yet they'll spew information as if they are the be all end all. They'll even go so far as to 'argue' with an individual who is well read in a particular subject.

Questioning and disagreeing is fine and dandy if you have the know-how to support your side of the debate.

Often times though, and those who I'm talking about, do not.

yup... there is and I had asked for it to be turned off here but got no where with that request :)

Other sites we've turned it off because "management" wanted to avoid the whole cliquishness than can develop or to prevent a newer person from arguing with a person who's got 10,000 posts... by hiding it - everyone got put on equal footing...

if it's off you can still see post count in the person;s profile and in the member list -it's just not visible in this screen...

this site it's be super easy to get rid of because there's onlyo ne template.. other sites have multiple templates so it's a little more complex..

Yeah, I hated having my board with 5 templates and having to mod every single template to get options to work.

I found this actually. Nice easily installed mod

This might be useful for us... allows us to select if we want our post count shown...
