ok, you just decided it for me. we are twins.

no, i haven't been through some of the experiences you have been through, but death scares the shit outta me. when i was little, i used to freak my mom out, because i would lie awake at night crying uncontrollably just because i was afraid to die. nothing would happen to spark it... out of no where, i would just be sobbing because i was scared of dying. i did this fairly often. my poor mom had no idea what to do with me.

my grandfather, who named me, adopted me, and helped my mom raise me (she was only 17 when she had me) died while i was in college from cancer. devastating. the worst part is the guilt i felt (and still feel) for not being there more while he was sick.

james has never experienced any sort of loss in his life, and his grandparents are his everything. they, too, have raised him, and he worships the ground they walk on. he drives to see them every sunday. i can't even imagine what that is going to be like. granny is very overweight and not in the best health, papa has been smoking since he learned to breathe.

i am so sorry you are having to experience this worry and sadness. i wish i knew something to say to make you feel better!!

I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriend's mom, but thank goodness he has you by his side for this. I lost my father several years back after several years of fighting alzheimers and emphizema and anytime your parents are sick its tough.

You All Are The Best!

Thanks for the love and support!

Nat told me not to worry, and I went running. I feel great, now! Let me tell you about it...

SO I went to a track that was .25 mile (of course). It was dirt, and I chatted with a few people about the best track in the area--apparently San Lorenzo High has the best, and that's not too far from my house (I used to live in Felton, actually). But for today I stuck to Cabrillo. Anyway, it went like this:

I wasn't in the mood. The first mile was difficult--not breathing wise, but my muscles were still sore from weights on Monday and the intense Kickboe class yesterday. The second mile, I thought, "Damn how far am I really going to go? Am I really going to do 25 laps?!" The third mile I started to get into the grove but 6.25 miles seemed a long way off. At about 4.17 miles, I got a headchange. It was like I was starting to fry off of one hit of acid (trust me I know all about it). I suppose my brain was flooding itself with endorphins or something like that. Beyond that, my body disappeared and I was just running. During the 5th mile I was getting really happy and thinking I could run and run. Once I hit mile six and had one lap to go, I was One Stoked Valerie :) When I finished, i tried to sprint but it was difficult--however, it will be easy when I'm in a race. My competitive side will come out! It did last time.

Good news: I breathed so easily, I could almost have breathed through my nose. My VO2 max must be good (I don't know what a good reading is).

Bad news: I forgot to time myself!!

That's OK, I estimated from the clock in my car and I think it must have been 50 minutes or under. NEXT TIME you betcha I am timing myself. Anyway, afterward I felt elated. No hunger at all! Happy! Energetic! WOW!

Amazing. Running is for me!

OK, I'm going to go tanning right now, then study. Good night everyone!:D

Good grief, 50 minutes of running; you are awesome!

What kind of acid are you talking about. Hydrochloric? Sulfuric? Citric?

Thanks Tom! Lysergic acid diethylamide, silly!;)

Curves, where is Cabrillo?? IS this a school????

Yes it is a community college--and I like "Curves", how cute! You can call me Valerie if you want, either one is fine :)

Good morning! Are you tired the day after?:p Running, I meant running!!:D

Well, there, believe it or not I jumped happily out of bed and went to the gym at 6:30 this morning to weight train for an hour :D

Thanks, sweetie! Most people who hate running could probably lern to love it. The thing is, if you have excess weight, it may be bad for your joints and such. Walking fast is great for almost everyone. We're human, we're meant to walk. For long distances, actually--trust the Anthropologist!

yay, Valerie! So glad your run went so well and you felt so good!

There are times on the t'mill that I think (about a mile in) that I am just not going to make it...I can't do this...oh my god, my legs are killing, I can't breathe...etc (you get the picture!)...and then suddenly....it vanishes...I feel like superwoman...I could go for hours....and I usually end up making myself stop and get off the dang thing, long before I physically feel ready to. Weird....but I agree that it has to be the endorphins...that is why I actually hate to miss my workout...I like the way I feel for the rest of the day when I have worked out.

Glad to hear that your BF's mom is doing better and in good spirits, too!

Beth

Thanks, Beth, and you know--I heard that men do not experience the "runner's high" as much--like 69% of women feel it versus 17% of men. I think that running is for women! Like, we have more reserves and even though our hips may not be perfect for it, our minds need it. I feel great and eager to keep training--I hope you can make it on your mill today!

Awesome run. :) Running really does feel fantastic! I always time myself because I run on the treadmill... but I always forget to check the distance I ran! Everytime I finish and press the "CLEAR" button, I think "Dammit, forgot to check then distance again!!!"

Update

Deanne--tell me about it!

Nat's mom is A-OK. He told me that they did all the tests and found nothing wrong. We sat in silence and he said,
"I'd rather they say, 'We found somthing wrong, but really easy to fix,'"
I agreed.

Deanne, do you know what chest pain and tingling sensation in an arm means when all tests say nothing is wrong? I know you're going to med school (CONGRATS:) )

Anyway, after I ran I wasn't even hungry--no wonder hardcore runners are so slim! But I ate 2 packages of salmon jerky (80 cal each) and 2 packages of Black Diamond cheddar cheese (.75 once each, probably about 80-100 calories). As I studies, I couldn't help but drink some Almond flavored Elliston Sparkling wine. So calories were 2165. Apparently, a 138 lbs women running 50 minutes at 8 mph burns 700 calories  That's good! I also walked as usual at lunch, burning about 160 calories in 35 minutes.

I forgot to weigh in today--but it's probably no more than 139 or no less than 137.5

Today I woke up at 6:15 and got to the gym at 6:40 to weight train for an hour. I have my wine class midterm at 6pm. Wish me luck!

Hey Valerie!! Been awhile since I stopped by.. sorry, wasn't intentional!

Personally, I HATE to run! For me, it's short bursts that I do around the bases when I am playing softball. That suits me just fine.. a 60 foot burst!! Now, with the weight training, I can just consistently hit a homerun and not have to run at all!! LMAO  Just never could get into it I guess.

BUT, if it works for you.. then "YOU GO GIRL"!!! :D Glad to hear all is well with you. Keep in touch!

Bruce

Thanks, Bruce!

Most people hate to run. I used to! But my whole family on my mom's side runs--even my 77 year old gramps wins 1st place in his age group every time! I figure if I have a hereditary advantage in a sport, i may as well train that!

hehehe...sunnydee...I set the time on my treadmill for 30 minutes and then try to out-distance myself from the day before....I also try to increase my calories burned by changing the incline throughout the workout. mine shows time and distance and if you push calories...then it will show the calories burned for a few seconds and then back to distance.

I have accidently hit STOP instead of PAUSE in the middle and lost everything!!!!!:D
