David B's Journal

When you're doing the deadlifts, just before you start the lift, stop for a moment. Think about your form. Especially check to make sure you're not rounding your back. If the weight seems too heavy to do without good form, back off and lower it.

Deadlifts are a great exercise, but only with impeccable form. Do them the wrong way, and you are practically guaranteed to hurt your back. It helps to do them in front of a mirror, too.

Just as with squats, I do warmups on the deadlift, starting with the bar only, then at 95 lbs, 135 lbs., etc.

And try not to scrape all the skin of your shins! :D

Hello everyone:
Last night I was unable to get to the gym. This really sucked because I don't like missing it. O well there isn't much that I can do about it now. I went to the Mariners game last night and it went into extra innings and I didn't get home till Midnight, I thought that was a little late to go to the gym.

It is probably pretty good that didn't go to the gym again because I am still sore from Mondays work out. I am not sure if I could have done the Deadlifts and Squats. I will do those tomorrow.

I had a scary call this morning though, I get a call from my wife that my 2 year old (Cole) fell out of the cart at the store and fell on the back of his head. He was unconscious for 20 seconds and then came to. My wife called the doctor and they instructed her to take him to the ER @ the Children's Hospital. They are going to do a CT scan and because he won't stay still they have to put him out. I am stuck here at work and can't make it down as I don't have a way to get home right now. I just know that I hope everything is ok. Sorry I just had to say this to someone as there is no one I can talk to now.

I hope everyone has a great day! Just think tomorrow is Friday!

I just got off the phone with Krysten and she said that they didn't end up doing the scan because by the time they had to wait for the scan to become available Cole was looking like he was feeling a lot better. The doctor said that it wouldn't do much good now to do the scan and have it come out negative. Especially because they would have to put him out. The doctor said that obviously he has a concussion, but he said that we are just to take him home and watch him carefully.

I was pretty sure that everything was ok, but it is a little nerve racking when you hear something happened to your kid.

Thank you everyone for the kind words.

Have a great rest of the day!

Journal for 8/3/2007

Tonight was a good night for cardio. It was really nice as my legs felt normal again.
How long to DOMS last?

My legs are finally starting to feel good after lifting on Monday. They are feeling good just in time for tomorrow when I do the routine again. I look forward to lifting again tomorrow. I will be working on my form for the most part.

This next week my goal is to input everything I eat. I don't worry that I am eating too much, but too little. Once I start tracking what is going on I will know where my food intake should be.

Have a good night everyone! Happy Friday!

Hi David. So glad your son appears to be OK. I've gone through that scare myself with my own kids.

DOMS can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Once you get used to the lifts, DOMS will be a thing of the past, especially if you remember to progress slowly.

Are you using FitDay to record your calories? If not, you might try it. I spend $20 on the PC version, just because it's easier to deal with custom foods.

Tom,
Thank you, I am relieved that he is back to his normal self now. We will keep a eye on him though. I am glad to hear the DOMS go away because that as NOT fun. I opened a account in Fitday for now, but I will probably buy the PC program. It will be interesting to see what I am actually eating in regards to Fat,Protein, and Carbs. Thank you again for all your help!

This has been kind of crazy. We are in the process of moving, but the funny thing is that we are moving next door to where we live now. It is going to be a good move as now we are in a 850 sq ft house for a family of 5. The new house is 2200 sq ft. We are excited. The bad thing about moving literally next door is that it seems to take longer than normal. The move is almost over and then we can get back to normal.

My gym time has been effected by the move as the only time that I have to help move stuff is in the evening. I missed a couple of days last week, but I am going to try my hardest and make it all this week. I have kept up on eating good though which is a good thing. I am finding out though that I am not eating enough so I need to figure out some other foods that I can fit in during the day.

My scale should be delivered today, I am excited because I will be able to weigh myself in the morning instead of in the evening at the gym. I am curious to see what I weigh. My cloths are fitting a lot better and people are starting to make comments. It is a great feeling and it just motivates me to keep on going.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Good luck on reaching your goals for the week.

Tonight felt good to get back to the gym after missing it this weekend I did squats, bench press, and pull ups. They felt really good and I felt that I am getting the form down for squats. I forward to developing better form and routines as times go on.

Today for food

Breakfast = go lean Kashi crunch
Snack = cottage cheese and almonds
Lunch = 1 can tuna 3 wasa crisps
Snack = wheat tortilla and 3 turkey slices
Dinner = 6 inch turkey and wheat sub with mustard and all veggies

I am trying to balance everything out. I will see how it goes.

Everyone have a great night!

Hey David...

Moving's tough so don't sweat the missed workouts! Just be sure to hop right back on the horse when things smooth over. And that's great that you are upgrading homes. As much a pain in the butt moving is, I'm sure you'll be very happy once settled into the new home.

Take care.

I didn't get a chance to post last night as we were continuing to move. I can't wait for this to be done. We will be sleeping there tonight. My boys are excited about that as they have a new room to play in. It is great to be able to provide a bigger house for my family.

Since I was moving last night till midnight I didn't make it to the gym, but last night was supposed to be cardio and I was moving constantly from 6:00 to Midnight. I know that I wasn't working as hard as I do when doing cardio, but at least it is something. I will be going to the gym tonight to do another weight session. Tonight it is squats, standing press, and dead lifts. I have never done deadlifts before so it should be interesting.

I have been using FitDay to calculate my calories and I am realizing that I am coming up short in protein. My goal now is to find ways to add protein into my diet. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great day everyone, and good luck on your goals!

David

Good morning everyone,

Once again I didn't make it to the gym, but it is OK because moving had me constantly moving for 4 hours last night. We were able to sleep in our new house last night and let me say that is a wonderful thing. We finally don't have to climb over each other. I should be able to make it to the gym tonight though.

I have been doing better on the food aspect of this journey. I have had a hard time eating every three hours sometimes, but I know that it is good for me. It has really been good for me to actually plan what food I want to take to work with me during the next day and prepare it the night before so I have no excuses not to do it.

I am excited as I bought a new scale and it is coming in the mail today. I am going to have Friday be my weigh in day. I am curious to see what I weigh. I know that I have been doing something as my clothes are fitting looser. Maybe one day I will build up enough courage to post pictures to show my progress.

Enough rambling on for now, hopefully I will be able to report that I made it to the gym tonight. Have a great day everyone and good luck on your goals for the day!

David
