David B's Journal

Well I started weight training tonight and it felt good to start doing that again. Tonight I tried to find my starting weights so it really wasn't a full workout. I am sure I am going to be a little sore in the morning because it has been a while since I have done that.

This is what I did:
Squats
Bench Press
Chin Ups - assisted

My food intake has been good today. I really need to start counting the calories so I can make sure that I am where I need to be. I got on the scale tonight and I am down to 202. I know that 3 pounds isn't that much, but we all have to start somewhere. I am excited about it!!

Have a good night everyone.

Good for you on the weights program David. With squats especially, form is far more important than the weight until you really have it down pat. And don't get discouraged by DOMS -- it's a bitch, especially when you first start out, but it'll go away soon.

How'd your form feel on the exercises?

You really have to concentrate on the squats and deads. It's critical not only for physique success, but also, and more importantly, injury prevention.

I forgot to add that you can throw in some accessory work at the end of each day if you'd like such as abs and arms. Maybe do like one day of abs, one day of bis, and one day of triceps.

Nothing serious though, just a couple of sets using higher reps, say 10-15.

Thank you for the encouragement. I am going to have fun today. I don't feel sore yet, I know that is tomorrow, but I was walking down the stairs today and I thought my legs just wouldn't go any more. I look forward to advancing as I go.

I felt pretty good overall while doing squats, but I did notice that I need to work on keeping my back straight. I am going to watch some of those videos to hopefully correct what is going on there. I feel good about yesterdays workout though, I was really just trying to find out my starting weights as you suggested. Today my legs feel it, as I said above, it was a lot of fun trying to walk down some stairs. I am not looking forward to walking back up them :).

I will incorporate those accessory work from now on. Thank you again for all your help.

David, one thing I do with squats, before I add any weight at all, is to just do 5 of them at body weight, getting down as far as I possibly can. This warms up the hip flexors a bit, making it a lot easier to go beyond parallel when you do add weight.

Then I do 5 with the bar only, then 5 more at 95 lbs., 4 at 135 lbs., 3 at 185 lbs. Then I'm ready for my working sets.

Also, the warmups with lower weights help you check your form and work out the kinks.

Tom,
Thank you, I will try that. That sounds like it would help me a lot. I know I will get it down eventually and I will need all the help I can get till then. Thank you again,
David

On that same topic, don't up your poundages until form is firmly grasped. I can't over-state that.

Steve, that sounds good. I would rather have good form before I really could hurt myself.

....
Can someone explain to me how to do multiple quotes in a single post? I can't seem to figure it out.

You have to copy the quote into your clipboard. Then go back to the previous page, click on the next post, add your stored quote in you clipboard to the one there, etc.

Good evening,
I just got back from the gym doing SS Cardio tonight. I was a little worried about doing cardio because my legs hurt from doing squats last night. Half way through cardio tonight I noticed that my legs weren't hurting and I was actually going faster than normal. go figure.

Today was a bad day on the food aspect, not that I ate too much, but not enough. Work was really busy today and I worked right past eating lunch or my snacks. For dinner we had Port Tenderloin and wild rice, and mixed vegetables, it was really good, enough so that my two sons wanted seconds!

It has been a lot of fun the last couple of weeks. We as a family are making smarter food choices and the kids are really going for it. They have even stopped asking for fast food. This makes me really happy.. everyone have a good night and Happy Hump Day!

You'll find that to be the case.... some low intensity cardio will do wonders on the muscle soreness from strength training.

And I'm glad to hear you are enjoying this process.

You are giving your whole family an incredible gift by doing this. Especially for your kids, you are modeling behavior that will stick with them as they become adults.

Steve and Tom,
Thank you for stopping by and giving words of encouragement. That means a lot to me. I am determined to get this done right no matter what it takes. I know there is a long road in front of me to get to my goals, but I know that it will be 100 percent worth it when I accomplish them.

Last night after Cardio my legs felt good, then this morning when I woke up it was a whole different story :). I expected this and I know it is apart of the process, but it is going to be interesting tonight when I try and do Squats and Dead lifts.

I am going to have to go to the gym later than normal today. My whole family is going out to the Mariners game tonight for my birthday. It should be a lot of fun as my boys have never been to a game yet and they are really looking forward to it. (They are 4 and 2)

Tonight when I go to the gym I am going to really focus on getting my form down right on the Squats and try to get the DeadLifts down right as I have never done those either. We will see how that goes.

Have a great day everyone and good luck on your goals!
