When you're doing the deadlifts, just before you start the lift, stop for a moment. Think about your form. Especially check to make sure you're not rounding your back. If the weight seems too heavy to do without good form, back off and lower it.
Deadlifts are a great exercise, but only with impeccable form. Do them the wrong way, and you are practically guaranteed to hurt your back. It helps to do them in front of a mirror, too.
Just as with squats, I do warmups on the deadlift, starting with the bar only, then at 95 lbs, 135 lbs., etc.
And try not to scrape all the skin of your shins!
