I think basic sit-ups are overrated, because at the end of the movement, i.e. when your head is getting closer to your knees, you're hardly using your abs at all. Wasted energy, I say.
Add to that the fact many people just jerk themselves off the floor, and you end up with a move that does very little to your abs.
My current favourite is a simple crunch. Using just the abs, I pull my upper body slowly off the floor, until my shoulders are up maybe 6 inches. Then pause, and equally slowly I lower myself back to the floor. Doing this for a few dozen times creates the best "burn" I've ever felt in my abs...
