Cate's Diary

Glad you had a really good trip! Tai Chi sounds really good, especially since you already know you like it. Happy resting up!

Thanks, Marsia. I have a Tai Chi video & will get my Tai Chi book out today & make a start. I have set myself a personal challenge, starting today. I won't share it just yet as I want to get into it first.

We saw quite a bit of R at the weekend, which was lovely. He is struggling with tiredness as he just can't sleep. He said he was going to take a sleeping tablet last night but I know that he hates taking them. He said he was going to make an appointment to see his GP to get some melatonin. I just messaged him to ask how he slept & will try to keep an eye on him (from afar).
We took him down some wood & called in to see him in his break on Sat. We went out to dinner on Sat night with A & M. She looked unbelievable in red from head to toe, with knee-high red boots, red slacks & a red skivvy & a beige jacket. We had a very ordinary, but expensive Chinese meal. G was sick during the night & I was incredibly thirsty & awake for most of the night.
We drove down to the golf course on Sun morning & it was freezing cold & raining. I decided not to play, but the men all did. I went for a drive instead & then went back into town, went back to our motel but then messaged R & met him at his place, hung out for a while & drove him to work. I then wandered around town & drove back & picked G & A up after they finished golf.
We went out to dinner at R's work & had a lovely meal, sitting right near his front of house cooking station. We had a really lovely evening & we then drove R home.
Yesterday we picked him up & took him food shopping & then went back to his house & G cooked us breakfast, R had barely slept the night before & was exhausted. Luckily he had the day off. We left him at about 10.30 am & we heard later that his brother visited him. He also had his GF's youngest daughter with him. She is very full-on & exhausting. He struggled apparently as every time that he & his brother got into a meaningful discussion she interrupted with questions about his living room. I'm glad he took the time to visit though. His GF called in too after her ap't. I haven't seen her in maybe a year.
We also did a shop yesterday for our GS who is 20 today & we dropped it in on our way home. He is hardly doing any work at the moment & looked very happy to get a "care parcel".

Nice you got a good visit in with R and that he is taking care of himself and figuring out how to get sleep. I wonder if you got MSG in your expensive Chinese food? That's pretty dedicated playing in the freezing rain after not feeling well. I hope G recovered and is feeling better!!

I think it's a good idea to get some momentum and then say what your new exercise plan is. I am always planning and having my days go completely differently than planned, especially if I announce my plans here!

I'm sure the Chinese meal must have been loaded with MSG as I also had an Asthma attack at 3 am. G loves his golf. I must admit I called him a raving lunatic :blush5: He was fine after throwing up & slept like a log, snoring his head off.
If I announce my plans for the day in here I inevitably have them go haywire!
I will say that I do need to buy a fluoro high-viz top so that I can be seen more easily on the side of the road.

Hey Cate, I like good Chinese food, but its hard to find around here, good that is. I know the MSG can be a problem for some folks, sounds like you are one of them.

Sounds like things are going well with your son, that is good to hear.

Didn't realize you were in Tasmania, that seems very exotic to me. Now we have one more destination in Australia to think about, we still have over a year before our trip, just enjoying thinking and dreaming about it now.

MSG is in everything and hasn't been shown to cause "Chinese restaurant syndrom" because CRS has never been shown to exist in people who didn't know who'd prepared their food. It's worth a google as it's quite an interesting topic.

Strange. There was a big deal about MSG when I was a kid, and the more upscale Chinese restaurants don't use it because of that here.

Happy Tuesday, Cate!!

Hi, Cate! I'm just catching up on the last few days of your diary - there's so much happiness in there, especially the great night where you had the meal close to R's cooking station, and things going well for him and brotherly support and visiting! Wonderful! But also so good about your glamorous friend who's fit and comfortable in her body and isn't critical or negative about others - good for her, and may there be more like her!
I love the sound of your secret-for-now challenge - I'm cheering you on, on the other side of the privacy wall. :)

Hi, Rob(AR)- I was very thankful to the Asthma Foundation for their info when R was very young & had really bad Asthma. He projectile vomited once after eating "frogs in a pond". They said to avoid 101 (Tartrazine- yellow food colouring), 220(Sulphur) & 621 (MSG). We reduced these things & he was much better.
Things are going really well for him as he has decided to really look after himself & is implementing strategies to manage his mental & physical health. If only things would work out with the woman he loves!
Tasmania is a beautiful place and I'm sure you would love it. Australia is huge though! So much to see.

Hi, LaMa. I'm not sure what you meant but I do know what I react to mostly & excessive MSG is one of them. It would be a shame if people thought that all Chinese Restaurants add excessive amounts of MSG powder to their food, but of course, they don't.

Hi, Marsia. I have had an Asthma attack after eating at Chinese restaurants plenty of times so usually steer clear, but this time we were with friends & there was no other choice where we were. I'm not a big fan of food in sticky sauces which most of it seemed to be. I had a lovely Tuesday xoxo

Hi, Amy. Thank you. It was a happy weekend & I love getting to spend some quality time with our younger son as I know how important family is to him. My friend, M is gorgeous in spirit as well as physically. How good would it be to be so comfortable in your own body? I wish there were more women like her too. I wish I was :blush5:
My secret-for-now challenge is no big deal ;) It's more like a work in progress. I did get off to a good start yesterday though & headed off for a walk up the road. It was also good because I had a couple of nice exchanges with a father & daughter from interstate who were sitting in their car looking at a house his parents once owned & also neighbour who I hadn't seen for over a month.

Whoops. It's time to head for golf! Will look at the other diaries later!

I think we'll get there!!!

I really don't care for those type of Chinese restaurants with the sticky sauces either, and there are no good Chinese restaurants here now. When we lived in San Francisco, there was a Chinese restaurant with organic veggies and nice sauces that was walking distance from our house. I miss that place!

I love hearing how R is doing. It's great he has you and that he values family so much - nice testament to the way he was raised!!

I´m sorry if I suggested that nobody reacts to MSG, I was thinking of what Marsia mentioned (which was called "Chinese restaurant syndrome" at the time). It´s like the difference between actually not being able to eat gluten and the rash of people currently claiming wheat is generally unhealthy.

I really hope so. I know that I have to feel really slim (not thin or skinny) before I stop feeling so self-conscious & uncomfortable in my skin. 10 kg less than I am now. That's the difference for me.

Thank you very much. I love sharing how R is doing, knowing that you understand & care.

I think the world would be a better place if more people learned to use "in my opinion" more often.
I do think that there is a tendency to over flavour food with MSG as a cheap & easy alternative to actually making things from scratch, with bones etc. I think I'll stick to trusting my instincts from now on & steer clear of most Chinese restaurants as I have almost always reacted afterwards& it's far from my favourite cuisine anyway. As well as almost always causing an Asthma attack I also get incredibly thirsty afterwards & my thirst just cannot be quenched.
I just got home from playing golf. We abandoned after 6 holes as it started raining as was freezing! We sat around talking for hours afterwards.

I'll try and remember. I tend to avoid Chinese and pan-Asian restaurants as well even though I love some of the typical food because they usually have a lot of dishes containing stuff I'm allergic to and there's always a risk of cross-contamination. So you do you, of course!

Day 3 of my new plan (which is still evolving). ✅
I went out to golf yesterday even though I didn't particularly feel like it. It was cold & rain & hail were forecasted. 5 of us had a hit, but we pulled out after 6 holes when the rain & wind started up. We then retired to the clubhouse & had our lunches/hot drinks, talked for hours & I still got home before G did. I will confess to not feeling very comfortable at the club. It does not have good vibes. The club G is playing at does, but I would struggle to walk around it & it is also too far. I'll have a rethink towards the end of the year.
Part of my plan is going for a walk outside for at least 2km every day, regardless of the weather, walking at least 5000 steps a day, rather than trying & failing to walk more (thanks Rob for that article), eating under 1460 cals & logging everything on MFP. After 7 days I'm adding something else.

Looks like a really good plan! You are so dedicated playing golf under those conditions!! I hope you find some nice form of auxiliary exercise where you get to socialize. It seems like a big part of golf is being around nice company getting exercise together, which I hope you don't have to give up completely!

Happy successful Day 3!

Thanks, Marsia. I am having another successful day. My plan is not super challenging, but I think doing a 2km walk outside each day, whether I feel like it or not, will improve my mood. G & I both feel sad about R & C. I hope she gives him another chance to show that he is going to be more dependable & stable. I know she needs that for her & her child. He messages me a lot so I can't pretend I'm not aware of how much he is struggling with missing her, also knowing that she misses him.
I think after each week has gone by I will list what the plan was. So I started this on Tuesday. I think I will try working out a graph to show which of the daily goals I achieve.
I walked a little extra today.

I think you´re doing really well checking in with your own needs here. You´ll find what works for you!
