Cate's Diary

Hi LJ & Stacy. I think it may be my immune system fighting back. My glands were swollen & throat very sore when we got back from 8-ball(we won the grand final). H felt the same & we are hoping it's not a bug. I think it's a reaction to all of the perfumes we have encountered on our tours.
I made us both a hot drink with lemon juice, honey, fresh ginger root & a clove of garlic. I'll buy some olive leaf extract today & give that a go as well.
I still have a sore throat this morning so will do the same tonight. We have an allergy group coming to catch up with my sister at 11 this morning. I have met a couple of them before & liked them. H & I will go visit Mum again this afternoon & do a little shopping as well. I'll buy some echinacea & olive leaf.

<3
Miss you Cate! Hope you are enjoying your sis's company still and feeling better. I've only had time to read your last page but want to catch up more later. I've not updated my diary officially yet, just posted something quick like.

Oh hi KP! It is soooo nice to have you back.
I am feeling much better again today thanks hun. You should have seen the drink I concocted on Wed night! Lemon juice, honey, ginger root, raw garlic & some hot water. I took the last of my echinacea & bought some olive leaf extract yesterday & took it last night & again this morning. I no longer feel under attack. My sister said she'll be having that drink the next time she feels under attack too. Take that immune system!!

My diary was almost on the second page! I wonder if we can have it extended as it would be awful if newbies were discouraged by having their diaries 'disappear' so soon.

Having a comparatively lazy day today. Love to all, xoxo Cate

Yay for magic health potions! It is weird to have your diary disappear when you´re not writing for a day or two. On the other hand: maybe it´ll keep me motivated to post even when I don´t really feel it :p

Hi LaMa & LJ. I had another deadly concoction last night. I'm not getting any worse, which is good.
I'm going to weigh myself tomorrow morning & do a "fast" day (500 cals).
I don't feel fat, but I also don't feel slim. I have a slightly upset stomach this morning, possibly from gluten-free ice cream I had yesterday. Maybe I'm lactose intolerant after all, like my Mum.Better dash!

Or maybe your body is just saying: yikes! That tasted like lovely, ripe fruit but turned out to be all simple sugar and fat! That's what I'm trying to convince myself of right now, anyway. Stay healthy!

Thanks LaMa. I have tried to relax & eat what I feel like & not worry while my sister was here. I have eaten out 4 times this week. I have also tried to be careful that I didn't over-eat.
Yesterday we went to one of our favourite places that is nearby & ordered a small serve of the "gluten-free" felafel with tabbouleh & yoghurt on salad, so that we could have one of their very yummy GF Pavlova desserts. My sister had thought that they would make it with Quinoa, but didn't think it was, so asked the waitress what grain they used. She did not know so went & asked in the kitchen & came back & told us it was cracked wheat!
The owner, who I know, came up & sat down with us & looked embarrassed & asked if we were Coeliac. I said I was not certain as it would mean eating gluten every day for 6 weeks to get properly tested. My sister said she wasn't but was intolerant. The owner played it all down & said she thought we would have asked more questions & ordered differently if we were Coeliac. It was almost like it was our fault. She assured me it would be taken off the menu as being gluten free. She didn't seem bothered that it had happened.
I was still charged full price for our meal, which did surprise me. I will call back later in the week to make sure they have amended their menu & to tell them how I reacted....
I have had diarrhoea since & have had stomach cramps & felt exhausted. As I was driving home from the restaurant yesterday I could feel my body expanding & my legs & ankles as well as my belly swelling. I don't like making a fuss, but eating that meal could have meant death to someone else.
I weighed myself this morning, knowing that I am retaining lots of fluid & am 2kg up for the week. I had decided to fast today anyway, but food is far from an option at the moment anyway. Hopefully fasting will help my body get back to normal quickly.

I have just returned home from taking H to the airport. It was a very tiring visit, but I know I will miss her. She lives alone & does not have anyone much to talk to. G & I have had a lot to do to prepare for the 2-day vets golf tournament tomorrow & Tuesday & it has been very difficult. I feel I can relax a little now. I also think I may not eat at all today. I'll see how I feel in a few hours, but at 1.30pm I can't imagine wanting to put anything in my stomach for a while anyway.
I feel like having a snooze as I had a bad night's sleep. I probably will have a nap soon I think. Lots of love to everyone xoxo Cate

I'm sorry about the restaurant mishap. Not everyone knows what's actually in their foods.

I once specifically asked if a dish contained dairy and asked to get it without cheese. Server brought me the meal with the one cheese I had named off but with a cheese/cream sauce (which wasn't explicitly listed on the menu). She said "oh, that's dairy too?" You have to remember that servers aren't trained nutritionists. They're kids working for booze money or arts grads that couldn't find other work. They don't even necessarily understand what products have hidden gluten or whatever in them, so they just go by what the menu says. Shame on the restaurant for both listing that wrong and for not compensating you somehow. I would have just dined and dashed or left a negative tip (both of which unfortunately penalize the server, not the restaurant). I applaud you for not doing that. At the very least, you should write a scathing Yelp review to warn others and hopefully send the restaurant a message.

The nerve of some people! I, in your stead, would have said I´m coeliac. Never leave people wiggle room when your health is at stake. One of the good things about the EU is that since January of last year the... 15 (I think) most common allergens must be marked on the menu or at least easily checkable by staff. So many people got so pooped about how much "extra work" that would mean for restaurants and bars (I actually read a restaurant owner complain "how am I supposed to know what´s in the food?" WTF?) but it makes my life a whole lot easier. It also means I go to dinner more often again. I have been to places where the markings don´t actually match the content but in general it works well and if I now comment on mistakes or negligence they have to take me seriously. Long story short: get well soon, that lady is irresponsible and odious.

Thanks Baboon & LaMa. I will do something about it, as it should not have happened. If the menu had said nothing about a GF option I would never have ordered it in the first place. I did stress to the waitress that we were both GF. I'll check up on them at theend of the week, when I'm not so busy.
Feeling much better today after my semi-fast yesterday & have dropped 1.5kg. My stomach is much less bloated.

Hi Jen & chef :beating:. I love puns, even shitty ones. I'm glad I didn't have any fire alarms going off!
All good today. I had trouble getting off to sleep last night & had to get up very early this morning. We were out at the golf club from 7.45am until 4.15pm, but it all went well.
Tomorrow will be busier, but we know it is under control. G is going to play, so that is good(for him).
I have had some great news. My friend, S, who has had Cancer, is arriving back in Tassie next week. That is SUCH a good sign. I love this woman. She is one of the most positive, happy women I have ever met. I can't wait to catch up. I just sent her a message on FB offering to pick her up from the airport. :D Can't wait!

Wow, you can't kid around with calling stuff gluten free when it isn't. That's a great way to get the every loving crap sued out of you in the States. I hope you get to feeling better.

Oh, I know Cory. Crazy isn't it?
Have an upset stomach again this morning, but it may be due to a little dairy. I think I may be lactose intolerant as well. I can live with that as I'm not a big fan of dairy.
Off to the golf club again to do the bar. Yesterday went fairly well, but today will be busier. Nearly there!

What a cheek of that restaurant. You can't go around saying what you like. And if she wants a good reputation and customers to come back, you should have had that meal for free

Sheesh, the least the restaurant could have done is not charged you for their mistake!

Hope you are feeling better. I would have been really ticked off!
