Alligatorob's Diary

If you´d had one more calorie you could´ve gone negative for the (alleged) fall of Troy. But maybe this is a sign you should be upping your calories? Go a century into the future every time you run out of interesting numbers until you reach healthy maintenance calories :p

About the bike: does it have set programs? Just pedaling away is nowhere near as interesting for your heart and legs as adding some intervals with more resistance, more speed, or both. Kind of like you did on the hill. I like to start with a couple of minutes at a comfortable resistance/speed, then up the resistance for a couple of minutes while keeping speed stable, then drop the resistance but up the speed for a while before returning to a couple of minutes of easy pedaling. But of course you add/remove/change that as much as you like. If your heart is healthy you don´t really have to bother with checking your heart rate too much unless you have a specific goal you want to reach or are afraid you´re not pushing yourself enough.

I love this as the basis for calculating calorie intake! First, select your historical event... then eat till you get there!

Our thoughts go with you on your trip, Rob - see you Tuesday! :)

Haha, LaMa & Amy. I love it!
I just got lost looking for major events in the 1500's & 1600's ;)
Hope your trip goes well, Rob :)

I love it too . Super way to get calories or indeed reduce them .
Rob hope your trip is going well and you found something good to eat at the meal .

Back from the big D. I will try to catch up on food logging tonight, but I think I did fine on the road.

I tried exercising and ran into an unexpected problem, apparently I chaffed my backside on Sunday when I first rode the exercise bike and found out when I went to do it again. So I tried the real bike, it has been a little warmer and we have less snow, I got 10 laps in, but it just didn't feel safe, and I don't need a fall. Not only is there still snow in patches, but my ham-handed snowplowing has messed up the gravel a bit, so where there is no snow the ride is rougher and looser. Guess I need to find some good butt rub and the right pad for the exercise bike.

Wow, that's lots of snow! Bbrrrr...! (Maybe you could toboggan for exercise? Those nearby gentle slopes look tempting. And are those tiny trees peach trees?
But yes, definitely avoid the potential fall - especially as you're already a bit wounded from the chafing. Maybe join the walking club for a bit?

It was a good day, back home and happy. I ate well and at least gave exercise a try.

Yes Amy, those are our peach trees, looking a lot smaller without leaves. The ones in the foreground are just 3 years old, peach trees don't really get very big. More like peach bushes than trees.

I am liking the idea of first choosing a historical event and then a menu to match the date. Something completely new, a history diet! We probably need to think of a better name for it before starting the marketing effort.

2135 is the year with the greatest known risk of the earth being struck by an asteroid, Thursday, September 22 to be exact. So y'all better be getting ready. Apparently right now it looks like we have a 1 in 2,700 chance of being hit by Bennu, an asteroid the size of the Empire State Building. NASA is working on a plan to blow the asteroid up called "Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response" (HAMMER). I did not make this up! (An asteroid may hit us in 2135, but NASA has a plan). Less dramatic, but more certain Halley's comet will appear in 2134 and at it's height in 2135, lets hope NASA doesn't get Bennu and Halley mixed up.

About the bike: does it have set programs?
No, you just ride, there is a knob that adjusts resistance. The only electronics are time, heart rate, speed, distance and calories used. The monitor rotates between these. The heart sensor is on the hand grip so you get it automatically. Guess I need to put a radio or something near it to relieve the boredom.

Not sure if I will try riding it tomorrow or not, my backside is actually pretty raw.

Ouch on the raw backside! It´s funny how sometimes you don´t notice the chafing until afterwards. I remember a summer day when I was 13 or so I biked to my aunt´s with my older sisters and stupidly wore jeans shorts. (Total bike distance just under 150 km.) Couldn´t sit without a pillow for days after :D Which is probably a good bet for when you´re biking again: for stationary bikes cutting a bit of foam padding to size is often very helpful.

239, down 2 lbs this week! I am happy.

This is a kind of milestone for me, I am now down 81 lbs since May. When I started I said my goal weight would be 160 lbs, starting at 320 that gave me 160 lbs to lose. I am now past the half-way point. When I started I projected it would take 2 years so getting the first half done in about 7 months feels good. I know my loss will slow so the two year thing is probably not a bad estimate.

I am not real sure that 160 is the right goal weight for me, I originally based it on the BMI breakpoint below which I am not overweight and the fact that I once weighed 160 and felt pretty good. I know the BMI calculators are not perfect, and the last time I was at 160 was about 50 years ago in high school, I had been over 200 but lost a lot of weight to make the wrestling team. That was rapid weight loss on an irrational diet with extreme exercise, of course it didn't last, but for the short time I was at 160 it felt pretty good. I know my body has changed since high school and the best for me today may not be the same now, I will figure it out when I get there (hopefully I will). I know that's what a lot of folks here are doing and have done. As others here have pointed out to me I know that I am a lot healthier today than I was a few months ago at 320, and I sure feel better and better about myself.

Now I need to focus on eating right today, and figure out how to get back into exercising, I do better with short term goals than long term ones.

Rob I was looking forward to seeing your loss this week . To get into the 230s is phenomenal well done to you . Happy dance.
I love your photo . The mountains in the background are so amazing . You are blessed .well done for staying on plan while travelling . Your will power is amazing .
yep decide your final goal later , see how you feel in yourself and also what is maintainable more importantly.

Congratulations on a major milestone! No matter how long the other half takes: as long as you nourish your body and don't regain what you've lost you can only win.

Short-term goals are a good idea otherwise, things can be overwhelming. When I lost 36 kg back in 2007 I never thought it was actually achievable, but by taking each day at a time I did it in 26 weeks. I'm still amazed as I am at what you have done, Rob. You will work out where you want to be as you keep getting your weight down. It will become obvious to you I think. 160 does seem a tad low. I think you are quite tall. As you get closer to goal, just stabilising for a while is a good idea & then decide whether to go down a bit further. Maintenance is a challenge, but you seem well up to it.
I think you are doing great! Congratulations, Rob!

Thanks all, I appreciate the nice words.
I think you are quite tall
No actually I am kind of short, I claim to be 5'7", but probably have shrunk to 5'6". So 160 may not be unreasonable.

It was an ok day, my food ended up fine, but I was sorely tempted. And right now my belly aches a bit, I am sure it will pass.

No exercise today, its kind of embarrassing but my back side is still tender. I did get a gel pad for the exercise bike and tried it a little, but I think I need to heal a bit before riding again.

Inge and then married King Niels of Denmark. Ulvhild left King Niels under unclear circumstances and then married King Sverker I of Sweden. Originally from Norway Ulvhild had a relatively eventful life 3 husbands, all Kings and at least 4 children.

Here's one for LaMa

The USS Explorer (NCC-1035) was a Federation starship. She was a Ranger-class explorer in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. In 2233, the Explorer was lost on a survey mission in the Theta Reticula star system.

Oh, so much happens when my back's turned! **Well done** for being (good heavens!) into the 230s! :)
And it totally makes sense to reconsider what your end goal might be as you get down further into the "second half" of the healthier you project - using quote marks because with an undefined endpoint, the half-way mark could have been (probably was) passed some time back.
