Alligatorob's Diary

Just did my 40 laps, dodging most of the ice.

It was cold, colder than yesterday, maybe ~20 F, 7 C. If its as cold tomorrow I may need to find warmer gloves. The joys of ice cycling, can I call it icycling? The 40 laps were harder today than yesterday, my body reminding me that I've been off for a few weeks I guess.

Yes Petal, it is my indoor bike is a recumbent one, a big seat and you kind of lean back. Just to sit on its much more comfortable than the real bike. I think my problem is when I used it the first time it did not have much padding and I chaffed an area on my backside that has recently lost a lot of natural padding (fat). Then a kind of rash set in. Hopefully it will all be cured by the time it snows again, and I am ready with lots more padding.

So proud of you for keeping up with the exercise. I am planning to the gym tonight. It hasn't seen me in a while lol.

It was a good day, ate well, got a bike ride in, and I feel good. Had a non weighing thing, not so good, but not bad. A week or so ago I was amazed to find that some old relaxed fit, elastic waste 38 pants fit, and they do I am wearing them now. However I tried on some real levis size 40 and they were way too small, it will be a while. I guess I knew I could not really be a 38.

Thanks Misty, I know that getting back to exercise feeling.

In 1120 Walcher of Malvern, aka Walcher of Lorraine created a system of measurement for the earth using degrees, minutes, and seconds of latitude and longitude. He did it using Roman Numerals rather than our modern Arabic, that must have been tough. He was an accomplished scientist and among other things calculated and published computed a set of tables giving the time of the new moons from 1036 through 1111, apparently important for medical astrology at the time.

Well done on getting another bike ride in, Rob & on being down into the 230s already. You are amazing!

Good to see your calories up a bit, Rob. I don't remember exactly but the pant sizes started to change pretty quickly as I got lower, not too far away from where you are. Your body's physical changes may lag a bit with where you are with your weight. You'll see more change soon enough. You're doing great!

Doing math using Roman numerals suuucks! Keep an eye on your rash, please, as low protein intake can make wound healing problematic.

Also different brands will fit differently and sweatpants are more forgiving than jeans . It will happen Rob give it time . And patience . I am 3 dress sizes down from what I was in some clothes and 2 in others .
hope the indoor bike is better next time for you .
glad you had some soup !!

I loved hearing about Walcher of Malvern/Lorraine! Ha! I see Petal's post come up, and I was about to say the same - what is "really" a 40 or a 38 - different brands differ wildly in what values they assign to which numbers. (Walcher would not be impressed.)
Good for you re: the soup. :)
(to @petal: 3 sizes down! hooray!! )

On a side note I bought myself some nice satin pjs to just wear around Xmas . My usual nightwear garb is shorts and a t shirt and I normally look a mess . Both are size uk 14 ( think usa 10) . Same brand . One fits perfectly and the other is too tight down my lower arms . Very annoying . Realistically they should both fit the same .

Only 20 laps today, half my usual.

It was really cold and windy, even with another layer my clothes weren't up to it, I was pretty tired after 20 as well. It was still something of a workout, maybe tomorrow I will try long underwear.

LaMa and Petal, you are right sizes vary a lot from different sources. I have always suspected clothing manufacturers who specialize in big people mark sizes down, they know we are happier fitting into a smaller size, or what seems to be one anyway.

Off to the doctor this afternoon. Just a check up and consultation on the diet, I am feeling fine.

Oh, good heavens, yes to the long underwear! Or overwear - the Man Hard To Buy For found his life transformed last July by buying some very light pull-on over-trousers - he wore them pretty much all through the month of July. (I think they were intended for skiers - amazingly light and warm.)

Great about the check-up and consult. How long since the doctor's seen you? They'll be thinking that there's 25% of you missing! :)

It was a good day, ate well, got in half a bike ride and saw the doc.

The doctor says I'm not dead yet, it was mostly good. My blood pressure is on the low side of normal and he said my chest sounded fine and despite all his poking and probing couldn't find anything wrong, so pending the outcome of my blood tests I guess I am good to go for a while. He said that the health benefits I am getting from the weight loss are more significant than any risks of a low calorie diet, he said so long as I felt good and my energy stayed up his recommendation was to stay on the 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day at least until I get closer to where I should be. That make me feel better.

The only bad thing was I had him remove a mole that has been bothering me, it was in an embarrassing place, he got it off but told me not to ride a bike for a few days. I guess its my excuse to lay off a while. The good thing is he said it wasn't a mole, just a big skin tag, harmless.

Yes, Cate and Amy I will try some long underwear, I did wear some one cold day before it snowed. I don't particularly like the feel of long underwear, but its better than freezing. I guess I will have to get used to not having that layer of body fat that used to serve as my long johns. Amy, its my first check up in about 3 years, too long I know but I don't like doctors much. My great grandfather only saw a doctor for the first time when he fell out of a tree at age 103. And it killed him. My grandmother (his daughter in law) claimed he had been drinking, that's why he was in the tree. Not a bad way to go, but I don't suppose I am destined to follow. None of his 7 children lived to 103, and all saw doctors, maybe there's a lesson in that somewhere.

Today I discovered the sardines I have been eating for lunch have 220, not 190 calories. When I first bought them the label did say 190, but the most recent batch says 220, not sure why the change. So I may have been underestimating by 30 calories for a few weeks, not a big deal, but surprised me. Now I only eat the sardines, not all the tomato sauce and sardine shards left in the cans, the dogs get those. So maybe 190 is right who knows. No matter how you look at it they are a good high protein low cal lunch.

Almodis de la Marche died in 1071, she was a French noble woman best known for her infamous marriage career and familial relations. Her first husband was Hugh V of Lusignan they had two sons and one daughter. Then with Huge's support she married Count Pons of Toulouse but before they had children she was abducted by Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona. Shortly after the abduction she and Ramon were married and had twin sons. Apparently Ramon was also married to Almodis' niece, Isabela Trencavel. When Pope Victor II got wind of all this he excommunicated both Almodis and Ramon for bigamy, double in Almodis' case. None of this seems to have bothered Almodis and her extended family, apparently she stayed in touch and on good terms with all her children and husbands. Would have made a great reality TV show.

Rob
Glad to hear the doc visit went well and hopefully the bloods will be a good result too. Nice to get clarification from the doc that your calorie intake is sufficient and working . My husband wears long legging type things under his jeans ,he swears by them. I notice I'm a lot colder this year and as you say it's probably the lack of extra padding but I see that as a win.
103 is a great age to live too only if it can be like your great grandfather though and living life to the full.

None of his 7 children lived to 103, and all saw doctors, maybe there's a lesson in that somewhere.
There is and as your resident killjoy I can tell you it´s: "correlation isn´t causation".
Sounds like Ms. Almodis actually had choices in life, which is awesome!

Down 2 lbs to 237, I am happy. That's 83 lbs total, just a pound shy of 6 stone.

correlation isn´t causation
Are you telling me his first doctor's visit probably isn't what killed him?
Sounds like Ms. Almodis actually had choices in life
Yes, it is interesting when researching history trivia and trying to find something interesting but not too violent I have found it easier to look to the women. Every year there's a long list of folks who were born or died, mostly men. The men tend to be remembered for victories, though sometimes losses, in war or seizing or losing power. Women more for less violent life stories, like Almodis'. I suppose men had just as many of those, they are just less likely recorded in history. For example about Almodis' Wikipedia says she was called "sad, [of] unbridled lewdness". Its hard to find a man with such a description, though I am sure men of the age were no less lewd, she didn't sound "sad" to me.

Well done Rob that’s unbelievable weight loss . 1 lb off six stone is totally amazing and a huge congratulations to you . That should be enough to keep you truly motivated

Glad for your visit to your doctor, Rob. Great that you shared that info with him and got his feedback. Congrats on another 2 pounds!

I thought everyone would have had bad breath back in the day. Ingeborg must have had serious issues
Before the discovery of the Americas and the arrival of sugar most people in Europe had pretty good dental health and while they didn't have fluorine toothpaste many people did brush their teeth.
