Trops Diary

Thanks, Gonna, Alta, Sam, Paula for the kind words.

Gonna, I'm glad that I'm impressing someone. I was just looking at something called VO2Max, and it's showing that I'm one out of shape old man. Well, I can deal with that. My ultimate goal is 185, still have about 20 pounds to go, but if I get down to 195 I'll be real happy. I'm killing to get under 200. I'd really love to get there by Oct first. Don't see it happening unless I really kick it into high gear. I feel like I'm coasting with a small kick here and there. :ack2:

Ha Ha, VO2 max. I just calculated that for the first time in my fitness class last week :ack2: I show up somewhere between "very poor" and cadaver...

Being a smoker for 25 years probably didn't help that number :sifone: Glad that's over with.

One mile walk test, I forget the specific name. Take your pulse rate at the end of the measured mile and plug it into the equation along with the elapsed time, weight age gender etc.

I want to re do the test with an exercise that I'm more in tune with. I think I'd get slightly different numbers if, say, cycling were the exercise of choice. I have ankle issues that prevent me from walking at a faster pace than I do. I certainly wasn't winded.

Yeah, I'm sure that something is wrong. The calculator that I used had me running a 7 min mile to be considered average. Damn, If I was running a 7 min mile for 3.1 miles I'd be ecstatic. HR didn't even come into the equation. I'm figuring that it's another one of those bullshit things that unless you are down the middle of the road average, it doesn't mean shit.

You mean like BMI? Lets face it, anybody reasonably athletic is going to fail a BMI. I hava buddy here at work that weighs about 200lbs even though he's only 5'8". Guy takes his shirt off and he's got a gut like a washboard. Probably very low double digit BF% numbers if not flirting with single digit. His life insurance company was trying to make him pay a surcharge! WTF, have you looked at the guy??? He's got a resting pulse rate of 55 and cholersterol numbers barely into the 100's!! Hello!!

Exactly. For my height, 5' 7", I'd have to lose something like 60 pounds to be in the healthy range. Uhm, that's more then all the fat I have on my body, just to be healthy? that's why I don't give them lip service. 20 more pounds and I'll be good and lean.

Yup, BMI doesn't work well for really tall people either. I would have to be around 220 for it to work. I'm 6'8"...

Interesting thing I found after googling around.

Rockport walk test (the one I did) gave me a VO2 Max of 15.66 mL/kg/min (horrible)

Using numbers from my regular cycling (which should be pretty accurate) and plugging them into the Astrand 6 minute cycle test on another web site gives me a number of 25.65 mL/kg/min (still not good, but much better).

The actual number should technically be higher. This uses wattage, and the calculator doesn't allow a wattage number higher than 150 for the calculations. My wattage was working out to 165 -170.

WOW Trops, we are the same height! :cheers2: From the one picture I seen, you certainly do look compact--not fat at all. You naturally muscular?

The BMI seems like it's more appropriate for women, and even then not always.

Thanks Val. I never pay those things much mind, but it is a point of curiosity, though. I am muscular, but it is something that has always come prety easy for me. I've always been the guy that people call when they have to move something big. :D Actually, a friend sent me an email asking for help moving his workshop. I find it nice to be the friendly ox on loan.

5'7" is on the short side for a man, but it never really bothered me. My wife is an inch and a half taller (about 75 pounds lighter) then me and loves to wear heals. I love it. Some guys find it intimidating, but I love it.

LOL!!! LOL!!! Hahahaha!! "Friendly ox on loan"--oh jeez, well as long as you don't mind helping people move ;)

Hmm, I was messin with a guy who was 5'6" and it was pretty odd for me, just cause most dudes I messed with were 5'10"+, but HE didn't mind either, and he liked tall chicks anyway. Or, he just like women in general and as long as they were what he considered beautiful he didn't care about the height.

I think it has a lot to do with the confidence of the short guy. Too many guys resent being short, and are angry about it, or are scared by it, and therfore shy. I'm neither. I do have very good posture, and I think that might be why most people think I'm taller then I am. Even friends who are 6' or more always tell me that they think I'm musch taller.

I just found out something. Slim Jims, the little ones (.25 oz.), are 20 cal, 1g of fat and 3g of protein. Of course there is loads of sodium (110 I think) but not a bad high protein low cal snack. :hurray:

I'm not a big fan of Slim Jims. I don't remember ever buying one, but someone at work had a bunch that he left out for everyone. Not bad. Very salty, but that can be a good thing.

My cousin Sarah is 6' 2" light skinned and blonde. Her hubby Ricardo is about 5' 6", with dark skin and hispanic features...

They get second looks all the time, but they are such a perfect couple in every respect.

Hey, I forgot to mention. I weighed in this morning at 203.2. A new low. I don't imagine that I'll still be there tomorrow morning, but we'll see. This gives me one week before October to lose 3.2 pounds. Think I can do it? I do! :smash:

Hey Trops :)

Thanks again for pointing out to me that my pic is on that website... I'm wondering if they just put it on there recently because whenever I would look before I could never find it. I put the link in a post in my diary.

I totally think accepting the height god gave you and being confident with it is the way to go. One of my friends is naturally a short guy. He went to the doctor, and after years of telling people he was 5'9'' he found out he is really 5'7.5''... Well you would have thought his world was ending, lol... I just told him it doesn't matter and it's ridiculous to stress over something like that, that you can't control. Being tall isn't the greatest thing either... My torso is pretty long, so most shirts and t-shirts aren't long enough to fit me properly. i have to really look for them. I also drive a Honda Civic, and when I spike my hair up, I sometimes look like I'm driving around stuffed into a clown car, lol... I also trip UP the stairs quite a bit... I don't know if that is from being tall or just being uncoordinated and not having control over my legs, hehe....

Too many guys, I think, resent being shorter... and then they walk around with a big ass chip on their shoulder for it. I'm glad your not one of them ;)

Didn't know that about Slim Jims. I don't eat them too often either but, I always see them at the grocery store. I'll have to remember that next time I'm in the mood for one, I can eat it because it's not too bad on the calorie tally.

Thanks, Sam. Careful about the Slim Jim, though. The one I looked up was the .25 oz. It's only about 3 inches long, really just a quick snack, but not bad.
