The mind is the enemy

I'm trying to make more effort to count calories as well chick, we can do it! Scary about that guy grabbing you... Maybe find a different route. xo

OK, he's creepy - I tend to give the bad people the benefit of the doubt, and dislike the good people at first. Great personal characteristics, I know.

MyFitnessPal or LoseIt are both apps for the iphone. MFP seems to have better functionality to link with fitness gadgets, and LoseIt makes food entry a little easier (though I just started MFP and have used LoseIt for the past couple years, so I'm more familiar with it).

Wow, sorry about the creeper.

I think it's a good idea to keep a general track of calories. I don't necessarily think you should obsessively count them, but if you know about how many calories are in a given amount of something it can really help you understand reasonable portion sizes.

Hana, I'll definitely be trying a different route out! Thankfully it happened on the last short run on my streak, otherwise I would have had to change my routine in the middle of it.

LJ, I'm using the MyFitnessPal app to track right now. It syncs up with RunKeeper and my Vivosmart, so that's nice. I'm sure I downloaded Lose It in the past but I can't remember it....There are so many apps for everything, I could drive myself crazy trying to find out which one is the best for me!

Hi Cory! I totally agree, I just want to have a general idea of what I'm consuming. If I end up being obsessive I'm just going to give up altogether, and that's not going to help anything.

One thing about the calorie-tracking apps I noticed is that if you're lazy like me, you'll be prone to choosing the same meal you've already had so that you don't have to enter a whole new one. Especially helpful when going out to eat - you know what a salad is, regardless of restaurant, but if you get a sandwich from Subway vs Chili's, there's no easy corroboration between the two and deciding which one of those is closer to the sammich you got at the local place.

Obsessively what?

I made a big jar of super basic muesli and meticulously counted out the calories.... Oats, dates, walnuts, and chia seeds, plus the yogurt, milk and maple syrup for serving time. I anticipate eating a lot of this in the future.

That will be good. I eat the same raw/soaked breakfast most mornings that isn't too different than your museli. Chia makes it awesome. I love the texture and it is very filling.

Oh, Q! Speaking of chia, I bought one of those chia bar things you said you eat. It is just about the smallest food item I have ever purchased. Haven't tried it yet. Do you add anything fun to your breakfast? I like it as is, but I'm wondering what else I could add when I get bored. Cinnamon , for sure, and I can use different nuts.

Hi Oaks, just said I'd drop by and say hello. I've given up on My Fitness Pal myself, I'm more interested now in cutting out the crap, rather than eating it but it being ok because I didn't go too far over my calories. But I did it for long enough that I can estimate a lot of meals I eat now. So it will help you for that.

The Chia bars are great for "I'm starving, but I need to run before dinner" or shop or whatever. It's just enough to get the blood sugar up and make the stomach stop growling for a while. I use it as a field snack when I work outside too. Let me know what you think. I know it's the size of a cracker, but it's more filling than a snickers for way fewer cals.

I know you didn't ask, but it has the answer to your ? too:

My normal recipe:
1/3 cup Oats
2 tablespoon Chia
1 cup Almond or Soy milk
1 smashed banana
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 cap of vanilla extract
cinnamon
ginger

That all soaks overnight and is eaten cold or nuked if I want a hot breakfast. Good either way. I'll go with nutmeg for a change of pace or a tablespoon of homemade beautyberry jelly. It's 450-550 calories depending on milk used, pb with or w/o sugar, jelly/no jelly.

I've also used pecans and walnuts, but it already has good fats and nuts so it just makes the calories high for my recipe.

That looks a lot like one of my favorite smoothie recipes. Except I cut back a bit on the oatmeal and chia seeds to keep it smoothie-like.

I got home today without knowing what the dinner plan was. It turns out the G-Dawg made carbonara with homemade linguine. It was quite delicious. I'd never had it before, but considering the ingredients are pasta, bacon, cheese, eggs, and garlic, how could he have gone wrong? Wasn't the healthiest meal but I kept it to a normal serving size.

Hey Oaks, thought I'd drop in and say hi!!

You're so good with all your running... I'm actually about to add more cardio to my routine, I waaaaay prefer lifting over anything else lol. Has to be done though, I have a ton of new years fitness resolutions to smash. Yew!

Ps- Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Carbonara.

Ewww, is Carbonara supposed to have peas???? Thank goodness we avoided ALL vegetables in ours. There was no healthy green to be found, haha.

Lucy, I spent 36 days being so good with running....and now I'm being a total slacker. We got spoiled with good temps for a bit, but now it's full blown winter. I bet you'd smoke me in a push up contest :)

LaMa, I wish I was selective about my pasta but I am SO very, very not. We make linguini regularly, and just got an attachment for the mixer to make macaroni and a few other things. My first attempt at fusilli was pretty bad, but I'm hopeful I'll get better results eventually!

I am going to have to go get something else to eat. YUM! I'm attempting to have breakfasts, without starchy carbs & only had yoghurt & fruit again this morning & am staaaarving! Cruel, Oaks, very cruel!

I'm a pasta lover! Carbs, yum yum yum. Haha.
Look like you are doing well Oaks!
I'm also on MFP if you want to add me. I think my username is the same as on here. (maybe has some numbers behind it, can't remember)

Oh no, Cate! I hate being left hungry after breakfast. I was at a training seminar today and my stomach was growling so hard after an hour.... The only snacks they had were a variety of breads (blueberry, chocolate chip, etc) so I had to give in.

Fun thing I learned just now - "sweetbread" is the culinary term for the thymus or pancreas of a calf or lamb and therefore should not be used to describe what was offered at my seminar. I almost had you guys really questioning what I do for a living.
