The long and winding road hurts my fat feet

Alright, slight change in my motivation. I am going to not really focus on my weight for a while now, and put more emphasis on training for triathlons. My best friend does them, and he started out fatter than I was. He is only about 20-30 pounds lighter than I, and does them even now. Anyway there are different lengths of triathlons. The one I am focusing on is called a spirit. Its a pretty "quick and small" race. Its seems huge to me. You start off by swimming about a half mile. Then you bike about 6 and a half miles, and you finish it off with a 3.1 mile jog.

Anyway I jogged 2 miles on saturday, and on friday I found my road racing bike. Its a 1970 schwinn. No joke. I have a nice mountian bike, but I can't use it to race, and i dont want to spend 1000 bucks on a new bike yet, so i iwll make due with what the Lord has provided. A $5 bike from a yard sale.

Tonight I am going to strength train, and then the rest of the week is supposed to be nice weather, so I will probably do a lot of biking and jogging. I am trying to avoid the gym, because it starts to feel like a prision by the end of winter, much less if I went all summer as well.

I am kicking butt have full of energy this week. I bought a road bike at a garage sale, and have started restoring it. Yesterday I lifeted, and hard. Today I played football with my little boy, and rode my bike about 10 miles, with him right behind me in the carriage. He is so fun, and such good motivation!

My wife is getting interested in doing some cardio with me. This is huge, as it will help me stay on track, and she really needs to do something. I obviously can't nag her, and she is following my example. I think she is just tried of feeling lathargic, and thinks going on bike rides will be fun.

Man did I fail last night. I had pizza and tuxedo cake. Probably 1000 calories worth combined.

So, in a guilt driven rage, I worked out like crazy when I got home. After the workout I was looking at myself in hte mirror ( as all self loving gym rats do) and determined that if I lose 40 pounds I will be pretty cut. Its a sprint to lose the 40 now!

Last night, I jogged 2 miles, biked 2 miles. I am getting a lot close to my goals. This guy v girls thing will really help bolester my motivation - hopefully.

I am a workout warrior, and a eating warrior. I need improve my eating! I go like 3 days awesome, 2 terrible. ARGH~

I went to a waterpark on Sunday, and burnt the crap out of my back. I ate like crap too. Way to start the competition! Alrihgt! I just ate too much chinese on the way home. It was fun. It was the first time I was comfortable walking around without a shirt on at the waterpark. I mean, i didnt give much thought to the fact that i a fat pale white guy with no shirt on in public, but maybe thats just because im not in my teenage/ early twenties anymore.

Hey there FGT!

This is my first venture into your diary - and it's a good thing it's only on the 2nd page, or I would have been lost for a long time!

You've got great spirit and it's very cool you're a motivation to your wife :D

As for the water park, I went to one several pounds ago - and I walked away realizing that after seeing close to 5,000 almost naked people in one place, I only saw maybe *2* perfect bodies, and they were under 25, so it just didn't count ;)

Even the thin ones had areas of their body I'm sure they would like to work on.

Sorry to hear about the burn - my nickname as a kid was lob - for lobster.
I kinda know your pain!

Thanks- yeah as insecure as most of us are on here about being overweight, people who are underweight are as insecure about their bodies, or even more so. I learned this at college. All the really skinny kids would bug me about how I got so big, and they meant it as a compliment. They thought I was like buff or something, when I was really, more fit then, but way chubby. They wanted to put on weight so badly. If only we could like unvelcro our fat and share!

fgt,

it's great that you got yourself a road bike.... you're doing awesome!

btw, if your interested there is a pretty cool forum for road biking as well... roadbikereview.com

Hey FTG,

Sounds cool to fix up a bike like that. I bet you will love it when you are done. I think you do enough exercising that you don't need to worry about over indulging on chinese food every once in awhile. Take care. Keep up the good work!

Monday I jogged about 2 and a half miles. Yesterday I strength trained, and today I will be biking about 5-10 miles. What else....I will be eating around 2300 calories a day for now. I did really well monday, and got over yesterday. For the next few weeks I will be doing mostly jogging and biking, and as winter comes I plan to increase the swimming and elliptical training. I want to lose 50 pounds by spring. Its agressive, but steady. Then next summer I plan on doing at least 1 5k, 1 10 k, 1 half marathon, and 2 triathlons (sprints).

Hey thanks! I found a road bike I like on ebay, that is dirt cheap, but looked there and found out it is 44 lbs. Yikes. Not even aluminum construction.

Ok, last night I biked about 5 miles, and jogged about a half mile after that. Wow, my legs were dead. I didn't have my best stuff last night. I weighed myself after my shower though, and I am doing pretty well. I won't say how well, because of the guys versus girls thing. I started using sparkpeople as my routine builder/ foodtracker. I like fitday, but sparkpeople is better in my opinion. They seem to have more foods, and I like to track my workouts as well. The spark points are fun, I just wish they were worth something! Anyway I am eating about 2300 cals a day, and buring about 1500 weekly on cardio, and lifting 2 times weekly. I will continue this pattern for the rest of 06, As I would like to try and begin training for a tri in January. I would like to be about 50 pounds lighter then too. That's a little agressive but you know? Anyway, I need to drop the pounds because my left knee is starting to get sore. For me to be able to do the jogging required for training for a triathlon, I will need to lose the weight fairly quickly. Once I lose enough that I can jog regularly, then I htink weight loss will be a nice by product of my training.

You're journal is really fun to read! It's good that you're so motivated to lose the weight by spring and I bet you can do it! You seem to have a good head on your shoulders regarding excersising and you're educated on it:)

Having some long term goals is great too! Keep up the great work!

Thanks, I haven't had time to write much lately, or really be funny, but thanks. I will do better in the future I promise!

Kino- Good luck as you begin your journey. The starting is the hardest part. Once you get some habits going, and start seeing some results, its easier.

I know. I'm trying really hard to get into a solid routine but I"m excited about it so I suppose that'll probably help :)

Ok guys, I and my wife are hooked on sparkpeople. We have a friendly little competition going on at home right now. Its kind of like who can meet all their goals, and exceed them kind of thing. If this lasts for a year, my wife an I will both be super fit. Ok, here is what has been happening the last few days.

Monday- I was supposed to jog, but felt like my knees could use a break, so I elliptical machined it instead. No sweat. It was a good workout but not jogging. It was ok though, because I watched the better part of lost in translation while doing the machine.

Tuesday- My knee hurts a little- no big deal. My wife had started back to school last week, so the house was trashed. I decided to skip my regular workout and clean the house at a fairly vigorous rate. My wife was gone to meet the teacher night at school, and so I got most of hte cleaning done then.

Wednesday- I woke up, and my knee was super stiff. WHAT???!!???
So I wrap it all day, and do cold compresses. I skip my workout. My grandmother in law takes my wife and I out to the local Mexi joint....and I eat a huge quesadilla. Drats. My calorie intake ends up being like 4000 that day.

Today, the knee is almost 100% I would say. We'll see how it does at the day continues. I have come to this conclusion- If I seriously want to run a Tri next year, I have to lose 2 pounds a week, for the next 30 weeks. I am taking a hiatus from running until then, so that means diet will be more important than ever. 30 weeks puts me at the end of March. This is a bad deal, in that I need to start running to train before that time. I am going to be really agressively following my guidelines, and hope that I don't plateau for any extended periods. I will be doing a lot of biking, swimming and ellipticalling to get my heart and lungs ready. I think tonight I will do pilates, as it is zero impact on my knees, and the stretching would be good for it.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum on Friday.

I am 25, and so is my buddy Jed. I got married, became responsible by default. Et cetera.

Jed is not married, and not responsible. So when Jed bought a house for $16,000 in downtown Fort Wayne, it was a huge step for him. The house was a foreclosure that hadn't been lived in for a couple of years, and it needed a new roof. Luckily for Jed, I just happen to know a thing or 2 about roofing. This house is small enough that I could finish the roof he had been working on all week in an evening, and the storm front was going to hit Fort Wayne that night. So I am up on the roof, hauling. I have about half the roof done, and just then, I run out of nails. So I load up the gun, and in order to go faster I was holding the trigger on the nail gun down, and tapping the safety to the roof to shoot nails. Well, I turned and then proceeded to shoot a nail into my thigh. Thankfully, I went into shock. Unthankfully I went into shock. I thought that I could just pull the nail out. Well this particular kind of roofing nail had barbs on it, so it wasn't coming. So after wrestling with the stupid thing for about 10 minutes, and the shock starting to fade, I thought it best to go to the ER. I was admitted to my room in the ER by 7:00. Funny thing about 7:00 in the ER. That is when it gets really busy, with things way more important that a nail in the leg. So I waited for 5 hours with a nail in my leg for it to be removed. I was able to have the chance to enjoy 6 delicious shots. The anti-biotic shot hurt quite literally 100 times more than the nail in my leg. The tetanus shot was not sweat.

So, my ability to exercises, is gone for about 10 days now. I guess I Can use this as a chance to really work on eating a disciplined diet.

The good news is ND will play on Saturday, and that will help me to pass my down time.
