Sparrows Experiment

45 min Spin class and 7:20 pace run for 2 miles

I'm sore in my shoulders and my injured wrist from the rowing on Monday. Originally I was relieved that "well at least we won't have inflatable kayaks for the race"...but we DO! Oh we are in so much trouble! My leg muscles were rebelling today for the spin but were totally fine RIGHT after for the hard run. thats random. I'm trying to make the most of my short time since I'm only at the gym an hour before I have to go coach. I've had mostly protein shakes today. I don't feel much like eating (ITS HOT) so thats the best I can do

Since you requested 'em and haven't seen my log yet, here's the link.

we don't have flags. It is a new facitlity and I finally got the manager to admit he was trying to keep things all preppy looking for members... I told him athletes would be better, and I was fighting for a BIG clock over the pool. But there is other stuff I can use.

my back stroke is strong... I can pull hard.. sometimes the water comes over my head,, where do you look? angle of head? and tell about the flip turn please.

You have lane lines though right? Are they checkered until the ends of the lane and then they are a solid color? thats where you'd count from, if so.

Tell your manager that having a lap pool without that stuff is like having a weight room without weights! Gotta have the equipment.

Typically you want your head back-chin up looking at the sky for backstroke. As you get better at it it is possible to maintain a good body position with the head slightly forward..but for now tilt it back. Belly up, chin up. To do the flips you need to be able to count your strokes, so let me know about that lane line thing.:D

Ditched tri class to go spin instead. They were doing bosu workout and I always get sore...not really wanting that 2 days before the race. Then did just a little swimming..but got to talking with a friend in the pool so that kinda fell flat. ah well.

Went to my teammate/friends house after the gym for my daughter to swim with her daughter and to brainstorm for all the possible things we need for our adventure race to help us. We heard through the grapevine there may be a 12 foot wall to scale without assistance for the race. SO we picked the high beams of her patio and decided to try and get up there! lol. Our kids thought we were awesome  I'm lighter so I stepped on her thighs and then climbed to her shoulders on my feet as she stood up. The beam was 10 feet and I got it, but theres no way I'd get to 12 feet. We're both around 5'6. Then we hung from her 8 foot beam of her swing set to see if we could do pull ups in case thats where we'd find ourselves hanging onto the wall to get up. I can do 2 and she can do..half of one. ha. we're in trouble!

Well look at you all professional in your cute little swim outfit ;) just kidding FF, you look like quite the contender! Very slick indeed!

How are things going?

I'll try and get some sort of cool pic from my adventure race. Maybe I'll put my 8 yr old in charge of the cam :) those can be some of the best pics

PS I see lane lines that you can use for your backstroke counting..oh yes I do!

The race was fantastic. We had a great time and I'll for sure do it again. The water level at the lake was HORRIBLE. It took half a mile to run the length of the beach to the water's edge-no exaggeration!

We didn't know what we'd be doing until 15 min before it started. Then we got our "passport" that is something that had to stay with us at all times so that checkpoints at various locations could report our time.

The first thing we had to do was kayak, so we had to carry our kayaks half mile to the water to row across a section of the lake. It was horribly windy this morning so the lake was super choppy and challenging. carried the kayaks out to another part of the lake (maybe 1/4 mile) and then went running up and down very sandy beaches and hills with rocks. It was a 4 mile run out and back. Got back into the kayaks to row another section of the lake to go around a buoy and back. Then ran/carried those dang kayaks accross the original 1/4 mile, then kayaked back to where we started from, and back up the sandy 1/2 mile hill with them.

We lost one of our seats in our kayak on a return run with it so I had to sit on my knees which made all feeling in my legs disappear for the moment I needed them to run back up the hill with the boat.

After that kayak/run session we bolted to our bikes and covered, I swear, every square inch of trail in that area. I've been out to this spot a few times with buddies and we've done parts of the mountain, but never all of it..today we did all of it, every trick, every trail, ever challege was in the bike. It was awesome! My teammate wasn't really matched in ability. She does marathons and triathlons but is very endurance based, where as I work on speed and endurance. SO our abilities were mismatched a little but we still had a good time and I stayed her pace.

After the bike we had to go back down the beach 1/2 mile and do a physical challenge. it was a big pipe with a ping pong ball in it, hanging from a rope. The pipe had all sorts of holes in it and the object was to go to the lake (about 100 yds from where this thing was set up) and get a small bucket of water (which also had holes) and fill this pipe up until the ping pong ball comes out the top. SO I was the runner and I must've run back and forth like 10 times before I realized that ball wasn't making much progress. SO I looked down and saw some muddy puddles from all the other people! I used the muddy water and we were done in no time. back up the hill to the finish. It took about 2.5 hrs in all.

Crazy, but so fun. here is a pic of us. My teammate is the one next to me and the couple by her were our rivals (and friends). We now owe them a night of childcare and their favorite treat cause we lost to them..but look at that dude! hes huge and VERY strong. He practically did the whole kayak himself! lol.

HOWEVER, we got 2nd in our division out of 11 female teams :) so thats something to brag about!

FF you'd totally love these adventure races. Not the sprint ones either, I can see you doing the full on 24 hour ones...just to see if you could. lol

I have mud pie ice cream waiting for me in the freezer and we have a great movie to cuddle to. The perfect day.

I'm taking the day off. I almost got up to run, but then...well...I didn't! I feel fine though. I have a left bicep thats sore in a strange place. I almost can't straighten my arm. Weird, but I'm not much worse for the wear overall.

My husband is surprising me with a night out..that I know nothing about, other than we're going out. I love stuff like that.

Tomorrow I'm going to start on my old half marathon training plan. I have no more races standing in the way so I can concentrate more on solely running until November. I'm kind of excited about that. No more stressing out about all the cross training, even though I know I'll still do my fair share of it to recover from the pounding. I feel like a load has been lifted for the time being. A very welcome "break"

Glad to see new blood in my diary, hello CB! Join us for some training will ya?

New old blood :p

I do find reading your diary and FF’s journal inspirational.
Went for a bike ride yesterday morning (2nd since the end of May), I need to start riding more, I have lost the bike legs and lets not even talk about the bum (nothing like saddle time). I’ve been using my Mtn Bike, locking out the suspension, but I think I am going to get my old road bike up to speed (20+ year old Trek).

I also really want to get back to running, I need to lose a few (ok 20-30) pounds for running to feel comfortable (I hope).

I don’t know about training for a Tri, the closest pool is way to damn expensive (RDV Sportsplex).

But I will keep working toward my goals, and enjoy reading about others reaching for and obtaining theirs.

Later,
Chris “CBW”

and yes I do have some of the camo bike shorts:)

Chris,
you are in Central Fl, and there will be an IRONMAN "great floridain" and "Intimidator," and helth fair in Clermont, near Disney Sat Oct 20th. I should finish the race around midnight (ok- just kidding, hopefully about 3:30). show up and we can have an early, "about to die" dinner.

Or, there is the Disney Marathon in january 08. I plan torun that one in prep for the full Iron. You could be ready to "complete" a marathon by January, even if you only lose 10 of the 20 lbs.

Let's play man!!!

Chris there are also loads of duathlons that you might want to look into as incentive to get back in shape. Then you don't have to worry about the swim factor :)

Today has been fantastic..for a Monday!

Started a little frazzled, but once at the gym I ran it all away. I ran 7 miles in a bit under an hour today on the tread. I only had an hour but wow, I sure could have gone much longer, I felt awesome. My music was pumpin'
I really wanted to go back tonight to do some weights but alas, it was not meant to be :)

We found a house today, a really amazing one, WITH a pool! It would be such a tremendous blessing to get it because its like double the sq. ft of the one we're in. We're praying about it and gonna have a pow wow tonight regarding it.

Ryan took me to the most outstanding evening last night. The restaurant is called "Wine and Roses", its where my brother got married and its so classy. I was highly impressed and we had the best time together. Moments to cherrish.
