Omega's journey

Thanks. I hope so.
We had some brilliant challenges here in 2008 and 2009.
I always found them much more motivating that the standard ones where you just try to lose x pounds before the end of the month.

Losing weight is tough. We need to make it as fun as possible and as motivating as possible as it is too easy to give up after a few weeks / months of trying.

I post my weight every day in the "weigh every day" club. I did that when I was last at this forum and really liked seeing changes all together there.

It was posting there that got me to believe that everyone sees day to day fluctuations...

Today is one of those days when my weight has gone up - but it isnt as high as it was 2 days ago so the trend is right.

I had a 1 hour aerobics class this morning at the Centre for Sport. Then I went walking in the snow.

I am sure that not understanding things like this were central to me abandoning many weight loss projects when I was very big.

I remember only too vividly how impossible it all seemed.

I don't think I could weigh myself everyday if I seen my weigh go up it would depress me so only weigh once a week :)

doing a good job

Thanks for the words of support.

I got very much into the habit of weighing every day when I was in my big weight loss project a few years ago.

Since then I have had months when I haven't weighed myself - and I have gained then.
In fact - I tend to gain whenever I do not weigh every day.

definatly worth doing it then if it helps keep you on track, I have my diary that keeps me on track :)

I'm looking forward to our challenges starting should be good :)

I couldnt get to my normal Tuesday 3 salsa classes as Rod is miserable and full of cold.

After two nights of having 3 eggs for my main meal and two gains at the scales the next morning - we had lamb steak with red onion, peppers, courgette, tomato for our main meal.

Thank goodness the scale went down a bit.

I am still drinking the full allocation of water.

I plan on going to Zumba tonight whether Rod goes or not.

Hey Omega, I also weigh everyday - its my only way to ensure I'm on track and not falling off the bus. I keep a daily record and its good cause then I can see if I need to adjust my diet.

I love water - so its very easy for me to drink loads of water ....and Coke zero. LUV IT! And it helps for my sugar craving.

Enjoy Zumba tonite!!

Mands - thanks for visiting. :)

I agree with your comment about adjusting your diet... I must admit that I have been disappointed at progress so have changed things about... I have axed my weetabix/skimmed milk and sweetener every day and replaced it with 500g total 0% yoghurt with a tin of fruit in fruit juice...

My reasoning was that the yoghurt will be better food content and I have messed around with that meal in the past with good results...

500g total 0% Greek yoghurt gives 285 calories but they are very effective calories... it gives 51.5g protein and 520mg calcium... That is just over 50% of the calcium RDA...

I will continue to have 250g at suppertime with blueberries... I am often ready for it - especially on Tuesday and Thursday when I have done 2.5 or 2 hours of salsa since having my evening meal...

I have been neglecting my diary as I have been focusing on the challenge when I've visited the forum.
I am still spending time on another diet forum which has turned into a small group of old friends... I am running a challenge there and am making sure that I have 5-a-day (3 of which veg) all servings of a different fruit or veg... The good thing about running the challenge is that I can pick something that I know that I ought to be doing better and focus on it... The truth is that I know that although I was having 5-a-day I was inclined to have several servings of the same thing therefore not enough variety...

I have a lot of baked beans and am a firm believer in having a whole tin several times a week... they are tasty, inexpensive, high protein, high fibre and incredibly good for cholesterol... I was getting inclined to have a can of beans and class it as several servings so my veg for the day and be ok with that and some fruit...

A breakdown of exercise highlights since I last posted:

Wednesday - Walking during the day then zumba. I did always enjoy zumba 27,358 steps

Thursday - walking during the day then 2 hours salsa. There was no opportunity to shirk or get lazy with my steps and get them wrong as all eyes were on me since I danced with the teacher for the whole of the second class... 27,887 steps

Friday - treadmill... 22,179 steps

Saturday - 1 hour salsa private class where we work on building our routine, 1 hour zumba plus outdoor walking 30,646 steps

Sunday little bit of outdoor walking plus treadmill 17,955 steps

Monday - outdoor walking, 2 miles treadmill plus 1 hour zumba. I normally do aerobics on a monday but it was cancelled because of the snow... we didnt fancy doing outdoor walking in the evening so we got into the car and went to a zumba class in another district that I dont normally go to... We surprised our teacher as we do not normally see him on a Monday :) 26,990 steps

Someone has just been asking me about my food plan - so I am copying this from my reply.

Ok for me, I find it easier to keep to some basic rules rather than try to count things...
Counting things smacks very much of "being on a diet" and we have to do this as a "way of life for ever into the future"...
You cannot always weigh and measure things... so I try to follow simple rules instead...

- always try to eat healthily
old rules:
2 litres water
no more than one large bowl cereal
must take vitamins
low sodium option and do not add salt
no junk of any sort - but sugar free sweets and diet drinks are allowed
main meal - something healthy - but probably large portion and high protein
no bread
no cheese
very limited on use of rice, pasta, potatoes
lots of fruit
lots of Greek 0% yoghurt
regularly eat baked beans

new rules
2.5 litres water
no cereal
can have home made soup (using stock that I make myself from scratch to ensure low sodium)
must take vitamins
low sodium option and do not add salt
no junk of any sort - but sugar free sweets and diet drinks are allowed
main meal - something healthy - but probably large portion and high protein
no bread
no cheese
very limited on use of rice, pasta, potatoes
lots of fruit
lots of Greek 0% yoghurt
regularly eat baked beans - at least 3 cans a week (often more)

theory behind it:
calcium target 1000mg day - yoghurt and have vitamins to top up
fibre target 25g - fruit, veg / baked beans
protein target 105g - protein heavy main meal, Greek yoghurt, baked beans
sodium target no more than 2300mg

2 key items really help out this food plan:
Fage Total 0% Greek yoghurt: I buy and eat by 500g tubs
100g has calcium 104mg calcium, 10.3g protein for 57 calories
Tesco light choices baked beans: I buy and eat 420g cans
100g has 4.3g protein, 3.8g fibre for 70 calories

I am hoping that my calories magically stay around the 1630 that 10 times weight is...

I do a lot of exercise every day...

The big rule change is axing my weetabix...

I'm sure the changes you made to your diet will show in your weight loss. Weetabix used to help me be regular and since I'm on Cohen's, where its not allowed. I'm struggling with my tummy. But the baked beans should help you at least.

Great work on the exercise.

Omega, what challenge are your running? Where can I see it pls?

Korrie is running a brilliant challenge on this forum which is lots of fun.
I am sure that Korrie would welcome new players in her challenge.

I am running some much smaller challenges on another diet forum...

People would always be welcome to play there too.

A few years ago quite a few of my friends left this forum at the same time...
we got a bit disgruntled about a number of failings here... the fact that there is nothing here for maintenance really bugged me - but there were other issues too...

We set up another diet forum lol (where the admin is Kara who used to be karaCooks here)...

Anyway - it was pretty active and very supportive for a while - but there were technical problems and some of the key players (me very much included) had personal issues going on which meant that they were not resolved straight away...

Eventually the technical issues got resolved but people had to rejoin and it started again from scratch...

Now it is little more than a club for a few old friends to hang out and support each other... We do not really get spammers or new members (although anyone new would be most welcome).

We remain true to our original aims which include the concept that all challenges will be suitable for anyone to join irrespective of whether they have weight to lose or not... That means that if a challenge gives weight loss points and someone in maintenance joins we will devise a points structure that means that they can enter and earn points by staying in their zone... If one of the members is pregnant for instance (which happened before the big forum cleardown) and joins - they can earn points while gaining weight so long as it is in accordance of their medical guidlines...

Thanks Mands

I didnt know that weetabix was not allowed on Cohens. If you are struggling with your tummy - maybe Cate can suggest something... She is the best Cohen's expert I know.

Hi Omega. That's funny seeing my name mentioned as I just decided it was time to catch up with how you're going! I don't think I am a Cohen's expert any more as it has been years since I followed the program 100%. I will look it up though & get back to Mands about it soon ;) I think more water & Metamucil was the answer way back then but will double check. Good to see you back into the swing of things Omega, with your old enthusiasm :D Cheers xo Cate

Omega, I was active on this forum a couple of years ago. Reading about your weight loss journey really inspired me. Now I'm back, trying to lose some regained weight and it's nice to see that you are back on the forum too.

I am also a canned bean fan (although I prefer Cuban-style black beans to baked beans) and have some form of legume nearly every day.
