HI Heather,
Congrats on no soda. I think that was the first thing I cut out of my diets way back when (one of my failed attempts in the past..).
I also think your goals are realistic. I was really happy when I fit into my 6-8 clothing and that is what I am shooting for.(whatever pounds I will be at the time). Also when I set up my ticker, I set it up for mini-goals (I was not posting here at the time). I went from 200-180 first, then when I reached 180 I had such a satisfaction to push my ticker out to 160!!!. When I got in the 160's, I finally set it up to be the final amount I wanted to reach!!
Since it has taken my such a looong time (my fault) I found it easier.
I was debating about the treadmill thing but now I love it!! It was mainly a safety reason for me (the park where I run is very deserted) but now it is so convenient.
When I first joined the gym, this is what I asked my family members: instead of the dust-collecting gifts they usually buy for Christmas, go to my gym and buy me a gift certificate of membership in the amount of money you think you were going to spend on me. (It is a small gym and the monthly fee is $35) They listened!! Came Christmas time, I got a full year worth of membership!!! It was awesome!! I know I took the surprise out of Christmas, but I couldn't have been happier!! Also my b.day is coming up and I am already hinting ( I am terrible, I know) that I would like to have gift certificates to any sports store, so I can buy an exercise ball, work-out DVD's, dumbells...etc. I remember you mentioned your family really does not know about this so I don't think my tactics would work for you. Sorry I am rambling on again... don't mind me.
Looking forward till next time.
