kelly's diary

Well, my biggest news is a pleasant surprise.

I have been wearing my pedometer in the wrong spot, on my right hip so it has only been measuring every other step. Today I put it by my bellybutton and boy did those steps add up quick. I honestly thought my mileage was low the last few weeks for the length of time I spent walking. So, instead of 13 miles my first week, I think I walked more like 26, and instead of 21 miles last week, I'm pretty sure I walked 42. Today I walked 6.86 miles. Listened to 3 cds. Took me nearly 2.5 hours.

Last September we had beautiful cool dry weather and I got a cd walkman and we had a new parkway built with trails alongside and I began to take longer walks. Today I put my raingear on. The anxiety I felt before hand when I considered not walking was such that it made me do it. And once I got out there, it stopped for a while, and then started a bit.
:O !!! That is AMAZING! Even walking 13 or 21 miles is a lot, and going over 6 in one day is pretty darn impressive!

Since you are an outside walker, I would only make one recommendation, and it's not fitness related; get a cheap little pepper spray keychain, just in case you run into some unfriendly wildlife of the angry neighborhood dog variety. Those things are worthless against people, so if you're worried about fellow humans, get a dog and a fitness buddy at the same time. :D

I go walking in a local urban park, it has deer and other wildlife in it. My dad heard about that and decided I should have some pepper spray, and I figured it can't be a BAD idea, lol. Then again, I have bad luck with dogs, I think they see me and get hungry. :p

Good idea. I do have quite a loud alarm on my pedometer. I never thought of it but it might do the job in case of animal attacks. I will keep my eye out for that though, thanks.

1200 calories today. Not that I tried to limit them. Walking pushed my lunch late and I could not finish my quesadilla till 5. Ate up to 1200 at 9 p.m.

Be nice if its not raining tomorrow.

ps

I add that I am still hungry. Walking postpones my hunger. Its almost 10 p.m.. Wish I knew my maintenance level. Received a link to tell me but when I went there it did not compute for me. Will try again.

leaving the house

Well, I was at friend's house tonight, out of my house for an evening first time since I started two weeks ago. She served up hot chocolate and my mind screamed "Nooooooooooo" but I drank it anyway which shows you, well, it shows that I couldn't bring myself to tell her that I was avoiding sweets.
I would have preferred steamed milk. I feel it would have been rude to decline the hot chocolate.

Going out is risky.

Was it just one, or were there several of them?

If it was just one, it's not too bad, it's only a couple of hundred calories, the milk still makes most of it (according to most recipes I know).

BTW, it isn't that I think they WILL attack you, I just believe it's better to be prepared. The alarm might be good to "test" on a fenced neighborhood dog, if you wonder about it's effectiveness. It might sound cruel at first, but if you are near a dog's area, it will often become aggressive, so it will act in a threatening manner. If the pedometer alarm sends it away in it's home territiory, then it will probably work in other circumstances (like wandering around the neighborhood or park). If not, then consider getting some "pest repellant" or maybe even check petco for something else.

The reason I don't consider testing the alarm to be "cruel" is that neighborhood traffic often generates louder noises than handheld devices are likely to create. Therefore, since it's only a single test, and likely not louder than noises regularly heard anyhow, it isn't particularly cruel. Unless you drop it there.

I still am impressed with how far you are walking!

pepper spray key chain

QJay, I know where I can get one so I'll work on that.

Ate some more before bed, to about 1600 calories.

Howdy,Kelly
Stopping by to say howdy and see how your
day went? 1600 cals isn't bad just keep that exersicing\
and drinking water up! Have a nice WEDS Tammy:)

Today's walk was 1:45 minutes, 4.89 miles which is about 2.5 miph? Yesterday 4.42 miles in 2 hours. Makes me realize that I'm no speed buggy yet. So I'll put the time in to get more burn. Crunches, ugh.

Howdy Kelly,
Congrats on all that walking thats awesome!
I am no speed walker either on the treadmill I walk about 3.0 mph but
when I walk my dog all of his pit stops I dunno lol just know how far I
have walked.LOL @ UGH CRUNCHES I say that everynight.Have a nice

activities

Am starting to think about the calories burned in simple activities. Changing the sheets, 25 calories, etc. Have started washing drying and putting away all dishes and tidying kitchen after each meal. Small but part of the new me.
Luckily I have the time.

I need to start that; one of my resolutions this year was to become a little more organized. And you're right, it's small, but every little bit helps, right? ;) :D

another change

So I am just a little busier these days and I think its because I'm tuning in to my goal. Doing more small things in the day. My place is nice to be in. Being on disability it is a challenge to stay busy sometimes and I am happier now that I am doing more in the day.

Anything that makes you sweat counts as exercise, so if chores do it for you, then you have plenty to look forward to. Just think about how life will be when doing chores DOESN'T feel like exercise :D

Hey Kelly! Thanks for the post on my diary. Wow, you are doing excellent with your walking. I wish I had time to take long walks like that. Only on the weekends if it's not raining and my baby girl is feeling up to it. My lunch time jogs and turbojam at home is all I have time for. You said you are on disability. May I ask why? I have a bad back and had to undergo physical therapy for years to overcome it. I am not on disability because of the success with the therapy and plain old stubborness. Anyways, keep up the great work!

Howdy,kelly
Wow another diary that is organizing lol!
I tried yesterday and came no where close to having those
clothes organized.I have 3 bags to get rid of 3 bins to go through
over 20 garbage bags to go through and I put away a huge tub full and did
3 loads geeesh never ending clothes....Too bad theyte all aren't mine I own
about 12 % lol! Have a nice day and congrats on burning those cals,Tammy

Walked 2.5 miles today.

Also, I have cleaned out underneath my kitchen sink and now I'm going to tackle underneath the cabinets where I just know cat hair and splashes have accumulated. My house is getting in to shape too!

I am feeling very reassured that though it may not be measurable I am losing weight each day as I burn more than I eat. Thanks Niapage and Paquin for the recent information. I can eat 1675 calories and lose, or go extreme and eat 1544 calories. I am pleased with the amount I can eat. For all the new people who might be reading this, find out your caloric range! Don't starve!

I am cocooning and feeling good.
