"My" trainer didn't exactly say you "shock" your body into getting in to shape, what he said is that your body get's used to the same routines and then what do is not as effective. For me, my lower body is my bigger problem (surprise surprise since I'm a girl) so what I do is switch from machines to floor work (lunches, squats, side leg lifts, etc.) Then, I take it one step further and switch it up by using DIFFERENT machines than the brand I was using before and when I do lunges for example, I will do normal walking lunges during one "period" and then the next floor period I will do lunches where I "bounce" slowly 3 times with each lunge. I have to say I definately feel it more when I switch things up...
