Journey, Not A Destination

"My" trainer didn't exactly say you "shock" your body into getting in to shape, what he said is that your body get's used to the same routines and then what do is not as effective. For me, my lower body is my bigger problem (surprise surprise since I'm a girl) so what I do is switch from machines to floor work (lunches, squats, side leg lifts, etc.) Then, I take it one step further and switch it up by using DIFFERENT machines than the brand I was using before and when I do lunges for example, I will do normal walking lunges during one "period" and then the next floor period I will do lunches where I "bounce" slowly 3 times with each lunge. I have to say I definately feel it more when I switch things up...

I'm simply saying that isn't necessary. Honestly, most people of normal weight looking to lean down would be better served focusing on the big compound lifts. Yea, your body will get used to this stress. But then you increase the weight a bit and presto, you've got a new stress your body isn't used to.

I find many trainers are out there throwing around a lot of voodoo magic about the efficacy of changing up routines. And truthfully, switching up a routine before you sucked the effectiveness out of it is retarded in my mind.

I mean no disrespect to you or your old trainer.....

I'm simply saying if people focused on getting stronger in the important exercises opposed to switching things up constantly.... they'd be a lot better off.

Plus, I'm not a big fan of machines. At all.

Happy Friday! :hug2:

Just wanted to say thanks for posting the leg raises exercise!
I just love them! I can't wait to see results/less pain! :rotflmao:

Men vs. Women

Steve,
Don't you think it's different for men vs. women? I'm not trying to bulk up at all - just firm and tone. Do you think that makes a difference?

Not at all. Why would it make a difference? Are female's muscles different than men's?

Lifting heavy doesn't create bulk.

Excess calories do.

Hey Steve, I have an exercise question for ya--I know, shocking that it doesn't involve something sarcastic or perverted..lmao.

So before I started doing my circuit training and walking, I would ride my exercise bike for 30min at 20mph. It wasn't easy, and I worked up a sweat, but I could do it. So yesterday I got back on it after not using it for 10 months or so. And it's kicking my ass!! I have it set on the same resistance level and yet, I had to quit after 15min because my thighs were KILLING me..lol. So what's up with that? Is it b/c I wasn't using those muscles in my walking or circuit training? I thought I'd be kicking ass on it after all the working out I've been doing. I'm giving my thighs 30min to recover and then I'm getting back on to finish my 30min. :)

Hope you have a great weekend--whether you go drinking w/the boys, or have a romantic night in.:)

Hope you had fun last night whever method of fun you chose -out with the boys, or home with thelovely wife - or maybe a little of both :)

shhhh- we'll be vewwwy qwiet this morning... and offer a large glass of water :)

It's called specificity of training.

To be good at something, you have to train in what you want to be good at.

Cycling works things a bit differently than walking or weights, so it will take some time to get back into the full swing of things.

Nothing to worry about.

Feeling like a million bucks.... I stayed in. Rented 2 movies and just relaxed. Went out to dinner too.

Morning Mal.

You should've seen this girl in the gym lately. Her upper body is like that of a guy. The only visible fat she has is on her fairly large round butt. She's not steroids bulky, more like the type who naturally gets strong the second she picks up a weight. A bit too much definition and bulk for my tastes..

My sister's neighbor, who's very into fitness and very buff, was telling me about this "new" type of training where you take on a few new (for you) sports/type of training and you just work that to the max for 2 or 3 months until you master it. Then you totally switch up your routine until you completely master the next few things. E.g. biking/yoga and I assume he throws weights in there somewhere. But then when he and his also buff wife (she's an army major) kept talking about the key to keeping in shape is lots and lots of repetitions. This just didn't sound right to me since I've always been one to minimize my time in the gym with not so many reps. It sort of sounded like they didn't know what they're talking about, yet they're in their 40s and in great shape. I dunno..

That sounds like a great Friday night! I poured wine yesterday, without having a drop, then watched my BF and girl friend drink another bottle after. It wasn't too bad. I must say, being sober, you have total dominance over the conversation with drunk people.

I signed up for membership with the NSCA Certification Commission and ordered the essentials text book. I'm excited about studying, thanks for helping! I really appreciate it! :hug2:

Genetics or she's taken training and dieting seriously for years.

They have no idea what they are talking about.

Great shape maybe, but not great advice at all.

Very cool to hear Val! You'll get some great journals in the mail now. Some are a little 'wordy' but you'll get great experience reading through them.
