General hysterical diet related rambling: From Flab to Fab.

It makes sense. It wouldn't work for me and I've never tried to do it like that, but it makes sense :)

You said you were interested in a digital scale- this is the one I got (because it was on sale, but if I had to buy it again I'd pay full price for it, it's brilliant):

overtherainbow, i do have to say it is hard to stuff yourself with veggies and fruit unless you are at home, or carry around a cooler of snacks!!

Happy early birthday girl! I hope you do treat yourself to a nice slice of cake, for your birthday, and be good the day of and two days after =) hehehehe, what's your favorite cake? I do love a nice chocolate with chocolate frosting!

That digital scale looks awesome Amy! slim, fancy, high-tech but it still being simple!

I agree, I'm loving them scales, and i will definitely get them. The "dial" one i have at the moment isn't accurate, I put a 500 gram bag of rice in there and it weighed it at 650, no matter what surface i put it on, so i have been trying to put about a 5th less ingredients in the weighing bowl which is a bit silly really. And i love the fact you can easily reset it to zero with ingredients already on it.

I have no idea how i will measure the cals for some things like home made chilli con carne tho...

Yeah, I think your right there about the fruit and veg when out. Mmm, chocolate cake is my favourite too, i will be having chocolate fudge cake with cream tomorrow for definite :)

My bf is all excited cos he has bought me a pressie he thinks I'll love, so i'm so excited to see what it is!!! I was planning on having my perfect day tomorrow, but i accidentally spent all my money (it was a shock, i thought i had a few hundred left in my bank. Naughty me on ebay). I was planning on getting a posh massage in the morning in chelsea, then look around the saatchi gallery with a friend, then go to a really posh restaurant for a late lunch. But instead i'm going to have to get a massage of my bf (which is nowhere near as long as from a massuer!) then I'm going to meet my mates and go for a rather unposh lunch at the harvester which is a pub/restaurant chain (I love their salad bar tho). Then I'm dropping off the kids and going to see les miserables at the theatre with my bf (yaaay- at least something hasn't changed!, we have great seats as well). I was planning on getting drunk after and dancing off my cake calories, but i think we'll just have to go home boohoo. have to pick up the kids at 10 in the morning tho, so its probably a good thing i can't afford clubbing. Actually, I'm lying, its not good i can't go clubbing! Oh, and i have to go and get the morning after pill in the morning as my stupid injection has run out, and i can't afford it from the chemists. Fun! Glad I remembered.

So my perfect day will have to be another day. Although if my kids and bf behave themselves, it will be pretty much perfect. Not much chance of that happening though!

I didn't really do ridiculously healthy shopping this week, and I will be happy if i have lost a pound on wednesday. I was a bit rushed, and i thought as long as i eat small portions of the food i got with lots of veg/salad, i would be okay. But i ate normal portions of most things. I am just about to do my shopping to be delivered on monday, and it will all be superhealthy stuff, I want to lose 3lbs next week as I am DYING to go down a dress size. And get some compliments!

Anyway.... today..... (cals are estimates)

Food
Fruit and fibre cereal 550
2 scrambled eggs on multigrain toast 400
Home made cottage pie with lots of veg 650 cals= 1600ish. I hate eating a lunch!

Exercise
10 minute strength workout. Aching too bad for cardio.

Fruit n veg 3. Must do better.

Hope you have a lovely birthday :)

For calorie counting recipes, what I do is anally measure all the ingredients out (500g mince, 10g oil, 145g onion, etc- I chop up, weigh- I don't weigh stuff like mince if I'm using the whole packet- bung into pan, write down on a bit of paper), stick them all in my calorie calculator, and work out how much for a portion of that (half, quarter, a sixth, whatever it is). Works out exactly for me because I live alone (and close enough when my boyfriend comes to stay- I'm reasonably careful to give him about what I have), obviously you'll need to be more careful with family and particularly kids (I assume with kids portion sizes will vary).

Hi Ruthie!
Great diary- SO fun to read!!!

And Belated Happy Birthday Greetings to you!

Now I really want to know what your bf got you and how the festivities of the day went! Tell all soonest!

Thanks for the happy birthday wishes!

Its five in the afternoon, and i only woke up an hour ago eeek! So you can tell i had a great birthday night! My diet was completely blown to pieces, and i am feelinglike absolutete shite as i probably had at least 20 vodka diet cokes yesterday. Spread out over the whole day, but.... still! So forgive me if this doesn't make sense.

My bf bought me practically the entire Clarins range! I am so HAPPY!!!!!!! :D Its the best pressie ever.

Les miserables was incredible, everyone should see it at least once. It was so dramatic and emotional and passionate. 10 out of 10! After that finished me and my bf went to yates in leicester square, and they started playing all the 90's classics that i haven't heard for years. I had a great time and danced my arse off. We went home quite early at half one (so it was about half two by the time we were home on the bus), as wewneeded to be up early to pick up the kids. But he went and got them leaving me to sleep in, and that i certainly did! He's just left his mums bbq.

The only thing that went "wrong" yesterday, is that my mother didn't wish me a happy birthday. I haven't seen her for over a year now, and haven't talked to her since christmas (i messsaged her happy christmas and she didn't reply despite doing loads of other stuff on facebook, so we airred our feelings and fell out). I had thought to myself i would be willingh to give her another chance if she bothered to get in touch on my birthday. Shes the one missing out on her grandkids lives. Never mind. We have never been close, my nan was like my mum, but the older i get, the more i think that it would be nice to have a relationship with her.

Well, time to confess my sins.....

Food
frankie and bennies chicken and wilted spinach (didn't eat the chips)
A fabulous strawberry daqurri
a harvester "rocky horror", ice cream cream and chocolate brownies and wafers. 640 cals, and i didn't enjoy it much.
at least 20 vodka diet cokes. 1200 calories. Hmmmmmmm.
A mc donnald double cheese burger 490 cals
A kebab shop portion of chips

Exercise
About 2 hoursish walking
About 3 hours sweaty dancing

Fruit and veg none to speak of.

I'm glad you had such a great time! I would LOVE to see Les Mis one day. And ITA with Amy that after a day of treats, you just pick up and move on afterwards, carrying on with your healthy eating plan that is your normal mode now.
And your gift sounds super. I LIVE for high-quality skincare products. I'm mostly and Estée Lauder fan, but I really like some of the Clarins stuff! Do you have their Beauty Flash Balm? I really love how it works and it smells so lovely!

Sorry about your mother...but it's very good that you didn't dwell on that issue and let it bring you down. I send hugs your way and hope it all works out in the end.

Ahh well, it was the smallest serving of spinach i have ever seen, which is why i didn't properly count it!

I use good face serum (the no.7 one thats been proved to actually work), but i have to admit that i have been far from spoiling myself with the rest of my toiletries, I use the kids baby lotion! and st. ives exfoliater. And I've been washing my face with normal shower gel. But, thats all changed now!

I like how you can use the beauty flash balm as a face mask as well as under make-up. I haven't given it a go yet because I've already used three clarins products of my face after my bath lol (a watery thing thats supposed to seal in moisture, serum and moisturiser), I can't wait to see what its like tomorrow tho!

I didn't eat wonderfully today, but i will be 100% back on track tomorrow, and eat around 1000 cals for a few days. I read that your metabolism doesn't start to slow down before then, so i should be alright. I'm just a bit worried that the scales won't move this week and I'll be disheartened. Thats the reason my last diet failed.

Food
2 bowls fruit and fibre
1 slice pizza
2 chicken drumsticks
a tin of peaches
Lots of milky coffee

Exercise
Dragged myself out of bed
Hoisted myself onto the sofa
Made coffee
Typed on the keyboard
Lifted coffee mug to lips

Fruit n veg 1. Dismal!!!!!

My motivation has found some motivation to get up and leave me! Why can't I shake off my attitude of "I've fucked up for a couple of days, so sod it all"? I know its silly and ridiculous, and my head is arguing with itself. I have only had porridge today so far, and I'm keeping busy cleaning and tidying the house (It takes aaaaaages, and I am SICK of cleaning up other peoples bloody mess). Stuff always gets dumped on the stairs, and im constantly going up and down my four floors putting everything away. Rant over.

I could so easily gorge myself on junk right now. I always give up diets/healthy eating plans at about 3-4 weeks, so i am in my danger zone. I will feel so much better once I am at the two month mark i think. I might go and have some egg on toast or something... Have got hardly any food in the house. Hope there is granary bread. I know i am craving so bad as I have eaten almost exclusivly hi gi foods over the past couple of days, and I'm quite angry with myself that i went off on a mad one instead of only having one little treat like i had planned. I should have known i would feel like this. I wanted to lose 2lbs this wednesday and 2lbs next wednesday to reach my mini goal of 13 and a half stone, but i bet I will stay the same or gain.

Stress!!! Stress!!! Crave!!! Crave!!! Eeeeek, eeeeek!

hey girl! i am so sorry i missed your birthday! happy late birthday though! it sounds like you had a BLAST! I love it!!!!

Now you can debloat and meet your goal on Wednesday! ENJOY THE CHALLENGE! don't stress hun, it'll happen!

Can you find some substitutes for the food you're craving that won't be so terrible for the diet?

And don't be hard on yourself. Remember that every day where you eat better than you used to, even if it's only 10% better, is still a step in the right direction.

Oh my god, gal, I am in EXACTLY the same situation at the moment. Minus the birthday as an excuse to splurge... instead, for me, it was like 3 or 4 major social things happening on the weekend...

Same as you, though, I can't seem to shake that mind-set that I've already fuckd up, so what's the point anyway... It's good to write about it, though - makes you realise how stupid it is, and that we CAN and WILL pull ourselves out of our slump.

Keep going. Make it past 4 weeks. If you do, I will. I'll stick with it, and you'll stick with it.

I got myself lots of tasty sesame wholewheat crackers (yes, tasty ones do exist), and a bit of cottage cheese on that is so yummy. BUT - I'm a savoury gal. We've already covered that :)

xxx you can do it!

Thanks misspoodle!

I wish there was a healthy cake substitute amy! If you think of one, let me know!!!

Arrgghhh Decisionmaker, don't do that to me!!!! I will have to lie about what I've eaten lol, I don't want to feel responsible for your bad days as well as my own! You have really helped me, thanks for that. I think that most people muck up a bit in their diets, the ones who end up flaunting their hot bods in clingy clothes are the ones who dust themselves off when they have fallen over a hurdle and carry on to the finish line. Not the ones who give up and walk back to the burger van for the spectators. Am waffling on now!

I get money in two days time, so I am going to do some super-dooper healthy shopping right now to be delivered on thursday- think I am going to get salad for three days next week (to bump up the veg) and the rest of the family stuff I'm not keen on (hmm... like steak n kidney pie).

We will do this decisionmaker. We make the decisions, we put the food in our mouth! Its our choice, and we WILL MAKE GOOD ONES!

YEAH!!!

Food
porridge with sultanas and cinnamon
two slices of cheese on white toast
stir fry veg on its own
another lot of cheese on toast (1 slice)

Excersice
3 hours cleaning and tidying. All that boogying has done my back in for proper exercise.

Fruit n veg 3

Cake's a hard one. I just googled "low calorie cake substitute" and such things do seem to exist, but they're not that good.

For starters.

YEEEEEEEEEEEAH WE CAN!!!! And I hope that what I said before didn't make you think you were in some way responsible for that bowl (or two) of chocolate ice-cream I had!! God, we don't need that kind of pressure! Just letting you know that we all struggle, and you're right - the ones in those hot skinny jeans are the ones that dust themselves off and have lots of veg :)

How'd you go yesterday, girl? Don't think you're getting away from me! :) x

Thanks amy!

Haha, you noticed, I thought I'd got away with yesterday :) I had a roast dinner in the evening (Roasted potatoes are such a weakness for me, even ones that my bf cooks without my special way of doing it lol) then was on a late night junk food prowl, but I had nothing in the cupboards, and the kitchen lights weren't working thank gods. I had the major hump at the time.

I weighed myself today, and I've lost a pound, yaaaaaay! See we both thought that we were doing badly but we are still losing weight! you more than me, but still.

I've bought some food scales today (I got salter ones in argos, but purple ones amy). They need weird circular batteries, which i haven't got, I might pop down the shops again in an hour or so and get some. As well as my scales I have bought healthy food for tonight, and my superhealthy shopping will be here tomorrow. And my back is only hurting a teeny bit when i bounce, so I will be doing exercise in the morning again.

This weeks gonna be a good one! I'm all revved up, and I'm going to try and lose 3lbs/1.2ish kilos.

Its only 2 in the afternoon, but I will write my days food anyway, since i have just bought all my food for today. My bf and the kids are going to be eating something calorific most likely, but I feel strong today, I can do this woop woop.

Food
Porridge with sultanas and cinnamon. 500ish cals
Large sushi selection pack 320 cals
Tin of grapefruit segments in juice 310 cals (which is a lot for fruit isn't it?)
Mixed nut and fruit snack pot 318 cals
2 cups tea with sugar 70 cals
=1518

Exercise
1 hour walking -311
15 minutes trampoline -77 cals
half an hour cleaning -110
=498 cals burned

Fruit n veg 2. But will be getting loads in the shopping so its better next week- I'm aiming for 6 a day.

Your scale didn't come with batteries? Mine did. I thought about the purple ones (my favourite colour :D ) but the one I got was on sale.

310 calories is a lot for fruit. Was it in syrup or something? Instinctively that doesn't sound right.

Sorry for bumping into your thread with questions, but any recommendations for low calorie beef recipes? I've just realised I'm totally ignoring my doctor's advice and not having enough red meat in my diet (yeah, I know, that's not standard advice. I have iron problems). Also, a lot of recipes I'm finding call for rump steak, which is :eek2: expensive- any substitutes on a student friendly-ish budget that won't ruin dishes?

edit: oh dear, that smiley really messed with the format, didn't it?
