General hysterical diet related rambling: From Flab to Fab.

And I hope your teeth are feeling better soon. Is there anything you can eat that won't aggravate them, in case it keeps up? (I don't think a day or two around/ underneath 1200 will kill you, but it's worthwhile having strategies in place in case this sort of thing comes back, I would guess)

Ruth, (i'm glad someone worked that out cause over the rainbow is too much for me to type.)

Amy and i have different approaches to diet with regard to treats. I know there are people for whom what amy does works. It doesn't work for me. And i don't think it will work for you or shinsplints. Expecially with regard to sweetened foods.

However, what she says about enjoying food is true for all of us. You can enjoy your food without sugar, without cheese, without other highfat things. I think it has to be a personal choice though. We know our own weaknesses and we have to stick with our own decisions to avoid them until we feel its safe to bring them back.

For me although sugar is the key problem area, i also find it worthwhile to keep away from cheese and have committed to doing so until i reach my goal weight. I will then bring it back in to my diet but on strict terms. I think i will never have it on my pasta again. Cause i can easily fall into a thing of eating only pasta, olive oil and lashings of cheese which is not good for maintaining a low weight.

The main problem with cheese is that its high calories and if you eat it, then you can't eat too much food and maybe hungry when you finish your calories restricted meal.

But Ruth, amy is right about the calories per day 1200 is probably much lower than necessary for you. You can still lose weight easily and steadily and quite fast by eating more. I am not sure of you weight but 1500 is a good number for most poeple who are not very very overweight and who are of average height.

I couldn't help but weigh myself today (i weigh myself on the accurate-i hope- scales in boots), and I've lost 2lbs (1kg) in the past 4 days, yaaay! I am 14 stone 1 now, so I know that as long as I'm a good girl, I will no longer be 14-stone-something the next time i weigh myself! So thats 9lbs lost all together woop woop. Will have to try on some of the size 16 jeans on again that i had given up hope on.

Luckily i only get sensitive teeth when i have been drinking sugary drinks ie as mixers or wine. Phew!!!

I have been thinking a lot about the calorie counting thing from what you've both said here and on amys diary. Its quite interesting and I have been mulling it over. I think I have been subconsciously counting calories anyway, I know the calorie count for most things, which is why I guessed that i was on about 1200 per day. I am questioning whether my past obsession with calories was a really bad thing, i mean, when i was obsessed i was skinny, and when i wasn't I got big. I think I may just set myself calorie ceilings for each meal. I am thinking 400 on breakfast, 300 on snacks and 700 on dinner. I will try to aim for 550ish on dinner, but i'm not really that fussed If i go up to 700. so that will be 1200-1400 every day. As you know, i dont have lunch just a snack between a late breakfast and early dinner, so that means that i can be generous with my evening meal. That pizza looked gorge amy, and the ideal thing to make with my kids as well. Do you use normal cheese or the low fat type?

I am getting inspired by peoples exercise regimes, and i think im going to try and jog my jiggle away! I need to get some clothes for it first though. Tonight (and every night hopefully), I'm going to play dance central on xbox kinnect, its brill and loads of fun. I have only played it for a couple of weeks when i first got it, but laziness stopped me. So I'm going to do that for half an hour every night. I can't wait actually.

I need to increase my fruit and veg a bit, will work on that in the next week.

My food for today-

Small bowl of fruit and fibre with full fat milk, with no sugar. 350ish
Jerk chicken and mixed pepper kebabs, with coconut rice with peas and spring onion, and fried plantain 900ish Was beautiful, but sharnt be putting up the recipe as the rice isn't that good for you although i used lo-fat coconut milk. And the plantains are pure calories. My bf's dad was over today, and he has mentioned a few times how much he wants to try Jamaican food, as he lives in a country village (well, surrounded by fields), he can't get hold of that sort of food up there. So i decided to do the plaintains so that he had the full jamaican experience lol, complete with my awful jamaican accent talking thru dinner. Well, I have to amuse myself somehow.
a tin of strawberries and a banana 180ish

Equals 1430 cals.

Fruit and veg 3

Excercise- an hour and a half walking, half an hour dancing.

The pizza's great. I used Cathedral City's low fat mature cheddar- 30g is a bit under 100 calories off the top of my head, and I used that the first time as it's the recommended serve (I've since cut down to 20, which borders on stingy, but it's a big calorie saving). I also use the weight watchers pita, which is another saving (they're not very big but you get a lot of bang for your calorie buck with the flavours. My boyfriend reckons they're too small, but they actually do well for me when loaded up- although I tend to pile high then squash them to fit it all in without spilling it when putting it into the oven) I was actually inspired to make it based on making pizzas with my mum- she'd cut up ingredients and we'd put them either on home made pizza toppings or pita bread (usually much bigger pita bread though, I don't want to think about the calories on that). Usually much nicer than Pizza Hut etc, and a lot more fun.

For clothes, I got some Reebok yoga pants at TK Maxx- I don't know if they'll have them down there or whether they'll still have them, but they were half RRP (in fact, a sports store nearby was selling them at RRP just after I bought mine- I nearly died!)- and some really cheap t-shirts from Primark. The pants are stretchy so will last me for some time, and the shirts I won't feel so bad about chucking away when they get too loose for me.

Heya Ruth! Just a quick note to say hi and welcome! Everyone here is totally right - you have a great writing style!

Really looking forward to reading your progress. I always do a similar thing with telling everyone around me what my goals are... it certainly makes you feel accountable! Good on you for getting back on track :)

I haven't been to tk maxx for ages now, I haven't actually seen one in london yet, but i just looked on their website and there is one in central london yaaay. I'll definately be heading down there tomorrow as I'm meeting a friend after she finishes work, so i may as well go there before. Primark jogging bottoms tend to be rank/ shrink in two washes and expose my cankles, its definately worth getting more decent bottoms, the tops are fine tho, just plain, and totally bargainificus. I have plenty of work out gear but its all two sizes too small lol.

Will make that pizza next week definately. I think its going to be all new recipes next week, got lots of ideas from you and this website.

Hi decisionmaker! Thanks! It can backfire when you tell everyone your goals and you don't manage it tho, eeek! But it does also give you extra motivation in a way. Your doing well, your bmi is 24.7, so your officially a "healthy" weight now, Well done!!!! :D

I'm really not sure why some people feel like they have to go cold turkey on sweet things. There's lots of healthy bar type things that are sweet and good for you. Like.. nutrigrain bars, protein bars, special K bars, and then there's 100 calorie snack packs, etc.

My mother in law bought me a pack of 5 weight watchers bars about 6 days ago, and i ate them all! 80 cals each- not bad. The whole multipack= 400 cals. I just can't trust myself yet.

what are in those weight watcher bars???

Yeah I have a lot of workout clothes, I want some cuter stuff but I want to wait until I lose some weight...maybe when my clothes no longer fits me at my current size! I need to lose like 30 pounds for all of my workout clothes to get baggy~!

Ahh, well, they are a bit like a mars bar crossed with a milky way. No nutritional value at all. Ooops. I think a lot of these bars aren't really healthy though, and i would rather have a chocolate which i would enjoy so much more. I shouldn't have said that C-word, can't stop thinking about it now. Shoo-shoo- go away c-word thoughts from my mind.

Eat natural bars aren't that bad though, I think I'll stick to them in future. One at a time! I'm sending multipacks packing.

:/ Yeah I was like that too wanting to wear nice stuff, its probably pointless seeing as if you have a good workout your all sweaty and red, but hmmm.... I think that wearing nice clothes makes anything more fun, even excersice :) How much weight have you got left to lose now?

I agree about wearing nice clothes but i can't even do that really here as its so hot and most of them that would look all right on me are the below the knee type but phew talk about meltdown. I couldn't wear those here.

but when i get to be really cut and my legs stop wobbling so much when i run, i am going to get some tight little shorts and wear a tight little top to go with it.

But if you can find clothes that make you look and feel good then you should have them because they will make you feel good about going out to do your exercise.

um.. oh yes. You are jamaican? I laaaaaaaaaaaaarve the Jamaican english accent. It's really one of the most beautiful english accents in my opinion.

One of these days i am going to have to try this plantain stuff too. YOu are the second person who's mentioned how good it is. So when i get down to my good weight, i am going to grow a plantain and try it using some of these favourite recipes. I can grow anything tropical here cause i live in the tropics. I am even growing sugar cane and i looking forward to sugar cane juice this year, with lemon. yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarm!

Monster, if something is sweet, i need to eat the whole lot. That's the problem. And then i find i've eaten far too many calories. I also find i don't eat my savoury high nutrition foods at all cause i am too full already. And i lose the taste for it. I think i've already said this a number of times on this forum.

There have been times when i have tried to be judicious with puddings and such whilst on a diet. But it only lasts for a short while and before i know it something i am eating is simply too yummy to stop at one modest helping. apple crumble for instance. If you have so much trouble (as i do) moderating your sugar intake, doesn't it make sense to go without. And then if going without is not so terribly hard, doesn't it just confirm the strategy?

Maybe people who can moderate their sweet tooth are not as :piggy: as people like me who can't.

I remember reading that you moved somewhere very unusual and exotic fortyfour, can't remember where now tho, where is it? I don't envy you working out in the heat. Have you got a nearby pool?

No, I'm not Jamaican, I just like cooking Jamaican foods. Trust me, once you have tried plantains you will understand why the stereotypical Jamaican woman is quite large :) You HAVE to try them! I love Jamaican people in general, they always seem to have huge grins on their faces and are really friendly.

Mmmmmm, apple crumble with walnuts and custard: nooooooo good, but soooooooo good. Its my birthday the saturday after next, so i think I might treat myself to some. Mind you, I'll definately be getting it in a restaurant cos I know if i make it myself I won't be able to eat it in moderation, and the whole lot will be polished off.

Today hasn't been a great day for my diet, along with yesterday. The trouble is that i always relax my diet when I am around other people, and don't treat myself when I'm on my own. This doesn't worry me really, because i know that I will carry on eating healthily, but i annoy myself all the same. I got a large cappuchino in starbucks (I had that fleeting stabbing longing for cake, but the urge wasn't all consuming like it has been), then went to mcdonalds with my mate tash, and got a small fries (kids meal small). By that stage i was hungry, so I didn't do too badly really. I didn't have time to go to tk maxx, however I did buy two nice pairs of shoes! I have been buying waaaaaaay to many shoes lately. About 10 pairs in the past fortnight, all cheap, but still.... I actually have more shoes than outfits that fit me! I tried on my size 16 jeans, and THEY DO UP!!!!! Fat overspill, very uncomfortable, but the two sides of the zips kissed and made up, and vowed never to be parted from each other again. Anyways, just another 5lbs or so till I can shop in almost any shop i want to. Yeeehaaaaaaaaaaa.

I have decided that I am going to book my tummy tuck when i am 11 stone 6 (160lbs), which will give me a couple of months to lose the final stone before the op. I have been working out how long it will take me to lose that 37 pounds of blubbery disgustingness....

Superfast weightloss (average 2.3 lbs a week)- 16 weeks- that sounds gooooood!
Normal weightloss (average 1.6 lbs a week) - 23 weeks- almost half a year. Humph
Slow weightloss (average of a pound a week) -37 weeks, and i won't be baring all on a sunny beach any time soon. Or ever.

That little bit extra effort makes so much difference in the time it takes to get results!

Just wondering, if you eat 1300 cals a day, and burn 200 through excersice, would that have the same affect on your metabolic rate as if you had only eaten 1100 cals? Or does the fact your metabolism goes up when you excersice counteract that?

My food for the day.....
Tomato pasta salad
Jerk chicken skewer with a handfulish of coconut rice
Large cappuccino
small mcdonalds fries
2 bits of cod in tomato and chorizo sauce served with green beans.
Banana

Fruit and veg- 4
Excersice- An hour walking, 30 minutes hardcore house work, 15 minutes trampoline.

Hi gals!

Yup... I used to be exactly like this. I would see an ad for chocolate on TV late at night, and all the shops would be closed, I'd have none in the house (doing what everyone says to do) but I'd be like a druggy - I'd just HAVE to have some. If necessary, I'd jump in the car and drive a few km to a petrol station to get some. Ridiculous, but it's like you're not even aware of your behaviour until afterwards. :banghead:

BUT, I used to be like this. I went absolutely cold turkey for three months - no sugar - and now I don't have a hankering like I used to. In fact, I am one of these people who (most days) would prefer cheese over chocolate, and who is happy with just have half a brownie (most days).

Now cheese is my nemesis :svengo: It's not as compulsive, though, and easier to substitute this desire with something healthier.

OH! A tip... do you have some sweet things that you don't really like very much? For me, it's raisins. Hate em. If I have them in the house, I can have a few if I really need a 'hit', but I won't want many.

Ha, I'm no oracle :) I reckon everything is worth a shot if you think it'll help! Good luck!

DM (is it ruth or am i getting namefused), i am the sort of person if there is a sweet thing and i don't like it very much i will eat it anyway. Its the :pig: in me. Just freaking hopeless. So your raisin idea wouldn't work on me so well. But i love raisins anyway so it would have to be something like, um, glaceed lemon peel eugh! lol.

Rainbow (or is it ruth - god help me) 10 pairs of shoes in two weeks! That's close on evil! I thought my sister had a shoe problem and she's only got about 10 pairs of shoes. I can understand why you would buy shoes instead of clothes though. And i too adore shoes. Who doesn't they are such beautiful things and can make you feel very gorgeous.

Why do you need a tummy tuck rainbow? Have you had kids? If its just weight, you will probably lose it all. But maybe you said earlier in your diary and I can't remember. Please get a really good surgeon if you must do this. And find out as much as you can, including all the cons well before you go ahead. One of the many jobs i've had was working in a cosmetic clinic. We had a plastic surgeon and he gave us the low down on all the ops except this one. I don't think he did it very often but i don't know why, perhaps it wasn't popular. But i do remember hearing somewhere that it will pull up your pubic line so please research that and make sure you are fully ok with it way before you go down this route. Have a look at pictures without the undies on. And pick a surgeon who has done it quite a few times and has a good reputation.

Well done decisionmaker! Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing sweet that i won't eat! I'm not too keen on liquorice, but i will still eat it.

I am Ruth! I was going to call myself ruthieovertherainbow, which is my ebay name, but there wasn't enough letters available, booooooo.

The great thing about shoes is that they always fit no matter what weight you are! I am unlucky enough to have humongous feet (they are probably at least 25lbs of my weight lol), but i still love having a big choice! I don't normally have many shoes, i usually have about three pairs i wear a lot and when they start to get skanky i throw them. I dont know where this sudden obsession with them has come from!

This tummy tuck is 100% of my motivation to lose weight, cos i know I'll never look good naked without one! I have two kids, they're 2 and 6. I was large when i was pregnant with my son, when i lost the weight when he was about a year old i was just left with a wrinkled flap of skin for my tummy. Its seriously bad. It doesn't look that awful right now as its padded out with fat, but i know when i lose weight it will be horrific. I've been thinking about it and researching it for two years now, so I know my stuff, and i will make sure that i use a surgeon who is reputable and recommended. I know there will be a scar, but i don't care!

Food for today.....

Large portion of porridge with honey and cinnamon

2 chicken thighs topped with basil and wrapped in crispy prosciutto ham with oven baked cherry tomatoes, cannelloni beans and garlic, with two bits of crusty multi-grain baguette.

Plum, apple, peach and satsuma

Excersice

30 minute morning workout
1 hour walking
30 mins housework
15 minutes dancing

Fruit and veg = 5 (actuallly reached it for a change!)

Hey Ruth! I like that idea of a tummy tuck, with all that research for 2 years and that's something you really want, you should do it! I support you! How tall are you? are you sure you want to have the tummy tuck at 160? Depends on your height and your body fat % i guess!

So you eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day? I realized it's pretty hard to get all my fruit and veggies in...i feel like i'm eating fruit every hour of the day!

that chicken thigh meal sounds SOOO good, i love basil!

I'm 5 foot 8 and a half, and i am a size 10 (uk) at 150lbs. Which seems quite a lot of weight for that dress size really doesn't it? I was thinking that maybe i would book the tummy tuck when i am 160, which will give me heaps of motivation to lose the last 10lbs before the op. If i don't lose the last little bit i will cry! I would love to be under 10 stone, and in single digits with the first number of my weight. But right now i'm just concentrating on getting a healthy bmi lol, not on being all lovely and skinny. Tho that will be the eventual bonus.

I find it really hard too.... fruit is easier than vegetables cos you can have it as a snack, its hard to sit there munching on a cucumber or something without being laughed at. I'm thinking i might start eating fruit at brekkie. I think sultanas in porridge count as a portion, and orange juice counts as one as well, I just don't like wasting my calories on drinks, even if it is fruit. I guess we could try things like peppers and houmous as a snack, but thats never really appealed to me. So for now I'm probably going to stick with munching fruit in front of the telly. Off to watch a film with my bf now anyway, its called mesrine. I watched the first one yesterday, it was quite good considering its blokey and subtitled. You never know, i might get some sexcersise if i lose track of the subtitles ;)

Rainbow - whatever you need to get you inspired, do it! :) You have a concrete goal for yourself, and you are determined to get there. It's awesome!

Ya, :iagree: about the concept of spending calories on a drink... It is so so rare for me to have a fruit juice. And it's often without the fibre and a lot of the good stuff anyway... But then again, I'm not such a fruit person. It seems that you and I are opposites like this! I am reallllly happy munching on carrots, peppers, beans, cucumber, with a dip of some sort (hummus or tzatziki), but the fruit thing never really appeals to me. I've also lately been having two wholemeal crackers with low fat cottage cheese and, if I can be bothered, some slices of tomato. With black pepper. SO yummy.

Mmm porridge for breakfast! SOOO healthy! :hurray: My man and I went through a phase when we were camping where we'd have porridge every morning, with cinnamon, a half a grated apple each, with some sunflower and linseeds thrown over the top. SUCH a good breakfast, and filled you up for ages! Can't seem to get back into that habit ... I think you've inspired me though!
