Flyer's diary

I do love bubbly, but maybe I should try drinking wine out of a jar. I think that might just put me off! I used to want to look & dress like Emma Peel :blush5:

there isn't a guy who wouldn't trade places with John Steed for a day...

i'm beginning to understand their incentive to pop a cork ... any sunny afternoon will do.

...How much is your calorie intake per meal if I may ask?

i don't count calories though i usually have some idea.
one of the inherent benefits of intermittent fasting is that there just isn't enough time in the day to eat more than i need.

new coffee maker only 2 days away... :)
thank God for the little things... not much else these days.

i'm not sure delivery services who give you a tracking number and post a date your package will be delivered, realize that getting it there a day or two earlier is not always a plus. "my package will be delivered Monday so i can take off for the weekend", while your package actually gets delivered Friday evening and spends the weekend on your doorstep.

but that didn't happen and i can't complain ... i have coffee in the kitchen again.

Congratulations! I sent a package to my sister last year. Website it'd take a week to get sent out yet it was delivered the next day...

Super Bowl XL was kinda cool, but Super Bowl LV??
isn't it about time to retire the Roman numerals?

this isn't surprising... salty popcorn + too cold and wet to walk recently...

RIP Hank Aaron & Larry King.
tough weekend.

i heard one time that the movie industry started using Roman numerals for dating movies in the credits because people would have trouble trying to interpret it at a glance. starting in the 20th century and beginning with MCM... they were probably right. the deeper into the century, the more confusing.... 1947 vs. MCMXLVII, 1988 vs MCMLXXXVIII etc. but since the turn of the 21st century, they might want to rethink this strategy... MMXXI = 2021 still takes a bit of thinking, ... but not as much.

I didn´t know Groundhog Day and Candlemass were actually the same day. Candlemass (Maria Lichtmess) is also historically the day the rest of the winter gets "decided". The old farmers´ rule says Ist's an Lichtmess hell und rein, wird ein langer Winter sein. Meaning that a sunny Candlemass means a long/hard winter.

Looked it up and found that you are right LaMa, Candlemas is probably the origin of our Groundhog Day, and it goes way back, maybe even to the Romans. It marks the halfway point from winter solstice to spring equinox, the mid-point of winter. In Ireland and Scotland it's Saint Brigid's day or Imbolc, which probably dates to pre-Christian, even Neolithic times. Groundhog Day - Wikipedia and Imbolc - Wikipedia

long ago i had a friend who liked to celebrate Groundhog day. probably easier now, but it was always a tough holiday card to find back then.

looking ahead, the 2nd new moon after the winter solstice is Lunar (or Chinese) New Year and this year provides a serendipitous Red Envelope link... it's also Lincoln's birthday, February 12th. i'm sure nobody will get the connection, but since it couldn't happen at a better time anyway, i'll be putting a crisp new $5 bill inside this year... :)

so i haven't talked about my freeze dryer in a while because my vacuum pump needed repair and i just got it back. i was surprised to find such good strawberries this time of year, but this batch, though appearing to be slightly under-ripe, seems ok. with Feb 14th coming up, i'm going to send some freeze dried berries out to my nephews next week. one is a newly-wed and i know the other has a girlfriend. if they get the package in time, when you slice up strawberries the way i do, they make crude little red hearts.

went shooting for the first time in months a few days ago and some jaws dropped when i pulled out my ammunition...

IMG_3649.JPG

if you wanted to make a good investment pre-pandemic, you should have stocked up on ammunition. a box of these .22 cartridges cost me $6 four years ago. today if you can even find them (Federal discontinued these 2 years ago), similar quality target ammo is selling for $25-$30 / box. bigger stuff and popular home defense ammo is even more ridiculous. with Remington declaring bankruptcy, the situation will probably get a little worse before it gets better. many are predicting it will take years to recover.

one of my bad habits is getting hooked on certain foods for months at a time...

"movie and a dinner"... 10 minutes of prep ... stick it in the oven ... watch a movie ... dinner's ready.

just to be clear... dinner, lunch and probably another dinner.

That's such a sweet gesture!

i'm really tempted...
