Flyer's diary

holy *&$%.... just about a week after i hung the bug zapper in the garage.
...and it's still getting a few hits every hour.

Are those house flies? If so what kind of zapper, I need one!

Thanks, that's what mine catches too. I have not found a good trap for house flies, only the outdoor ones that smell bad.

yeah, i hung it on my porch for a few hours the other day and it did not seem to attract flies only being that UV-ish light source. the one evening i let it go, it only seemed to attract moths. mosquitoes are not a problem; i don't believe i've ever seen one here. for house flies (i do get some of those) i was thinking about freezing little globs of raw meat that i'd use for "bait" for outside only... the bottom drops out to unload the zapped bugs. guess that's what the smell is... or maybe there is some chemical that simulates an aroma...?, but if it gets ugly, at least i'm in control.

i was posting too much in my newcomers thread so decided to start a diary page.

to sum up my diet in 25 words or less...

i am on an intermittent fast, currently around 5/19 daily with the only diet restriction being a severe cut in sugar, 5-8 gm at most daily. ... that might be 26 or 27 words if you count numbers.... :)

let me get some of the initial questions out of the way...

-- How much weight do you want to lose? i've already dropped close to 40lbs in close to four months and am currently one number (25.8) away from a healthy BMI. i would like to wind up more in the center of a healthy BMI, maybe around a 22.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight? i am retired, so before i die would be nice. optimistically sometime in the summer of 2019 would be great. this is 25lbs we're talking about... and i am a believer in "the hardest weight to lose is the last pound you lost". so even though i have been averaging about 10lbs/ month up to now, i expect that will slow down somewhat unless the exercise kicks in more than i expect.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)? i will continue to intermittent fast, but recently i have noticed a slow-down in weight loss, so proactively i have recently rejoined the Y. it is close to a mile from me so a walk there and back combined with some weights while there will hopefully re-energize my pace.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal? i think my biggest support so far has been from YouTube lectures and getting smarter about how digestion works. i had it totally wrong, and i am still learning.

-- How realistic is your goal? frankly i never thought i'd ever see the weight i am at now again, so i've thrown out the book on unrealistic goals.

-- When will you start? today, the next day and the day after that. every day seems like a little adventure when you see and feel your body getting better.

see you in the funny papers.
Nice

Yeah, UV can attract mosquitoes and fruit flies, but not house flies. I think the smelly bait is the only way, can't do that indoors, and even outdoors I am not sure the trade off is worth it. Did that last year and caught a lot of flies, but got tired of the stink.

One of these can be a lot of fun, not real effective but fun. BUG-A-SALT 3.0 BLACK FLY EDITION

*sigh*... the day after i bought some at $3/ lb. ...

i'm sure the ones i bought today will taste even better ... :)

my corn-on-the-cob watch continues... still at $0.89/ ea.

have to admit, my initial claim of <10g sugar/ day has been somewhat relaxed now. i am eating quite a bit more whole fruit these days, though i try to choose those with the highest skin to meat ratio (i.e. small apples, berries, etc). refined sugar remains on the low to zero level. i bake with sugar maybe 2-3 times / year.

re: the saying, "eat more fruit and vegetables" ... while i was actively trying to lose weight, i consumed very little fruit, but vegetables were on the menu every day.

a rare 90° day in San Diego and i had some chicken that was too close to expiring that i had to fire up the oven.

luckily i could spend the day my much cooler basement/ garage/ workshop and actually got some work done.

have to think we were lucky... i saw a map of the SW earlier today and i believe we were the only city with a 2-digit temperature.

i'm not sure if there is a subtle change or i'm just missing it... this year i saw cherries for only two weeks, and so far aside from 4th of July weekend, corn on the cob is still hovering around 50-80 cents/ ear. some deals, but not many.

on a completely different subject.... holy cow... i'm not really in the market, but at least around here, when i dropped by DIscount Gun Mart to pick up some cleaning fluid and patches, their inventory looked amazingly low... firearms are flying off the shelves and if you can find ammo, it's no bargain these days. two reasons i can think of, and one isn't good. and this is California which has some of the toughest firearm laws in the country.

overcast day so far... San Diego seems like it's back to (more) normal.

there can't be a better feeling (well, for me) than going out for a walk before breakfast. yes, it's 2pm and i haven't had breakfast yet. with my last meal around 8pm yesterday, for the past 4+ hours my glucose stores were well gone and the only thing left i could use for energy was stored fat. not a huge amount of calories, but anything in the right direction is a win in my book.

now i'm starting to recall... last year these pimiento peppers took forever to turn red.
i've picked some ripe ghost and Serrano peppers and the next round of those have already turned red in the meantime.

interesting corn i bought the other day... not sure if i've ever seen both white and yellow corn on the same cob....(?)

well the day isn't completely over, but i haven't really been hungry all day, so the plan is to put off breakfast until tomorrow... at least. i hate predicting these things, but from past experience, day 2 is the easiest... though i've only ever done 3 days max. good way to reset things.

Have your Santa Ana winds begun? I think you do get those in San Diego don't you? What is the peak of your fire season?

Peppers looking good.

:( Keep safe, flyer. And all of you in the trickier parts of the country.
