Flyer's diary

took advantage of a nice day and did some maintenance gardening. sprayed for caterpillars and did my best to squeeze the remaining pepper seedlings into some vacant pots. quite a full house in the patio garden now.

i don't know why this didn't occur to be before, but i ran out of containers for the stock so i just filled up a extra large Hefty bag with 4 cups, laid it flat in the freezer and voilà ...

learned a little lesson this morning... broth freezes ok in these bags, but apparently they might suffer a puncture in the process that is impossible to predict until it defrosts. luckily i put it in a refrig drawer to thaw, so the mess is confined, but the drawer wasn't exactly cleaned out so i decided to ditch the broth. oh well... next time it will sit in a pot. so much for making soup today...

new project for the DowelMax... used a pair of 4x4's i remember salvaging from a heavy duty pallet and cut them down to make a short stand for a new water tank. being in an earthquake zone, keeping a few gallons of water on hand is ok, but having a 55 gallon tank makes me feel better. for a nice cosmetic touch, quite by accident the stand turned out to be exactly the size of an 18" square tile i had left over from redoing my shower years ago. after i top off the stand with a piece of plywood, i'll have to figure a way to attach the tile square..

i feel good when i can salvage some perfectly good wood from just being tossed, but it's even a better feeling when i find a way to recycle it. i was thinking this cost $0 to make, but then there was 72 dowel pins, a mess (literally) of glue and so far i've only amortized the DowelMax jig over 2 projects ... but, ... still a lot of fun... :). i'll probably throw on a coat of paint tomorrow.

i seem to have found a good home in the high 160's, but this morning i stumbled upon a long overdue milestone. without too much thought, my belt found the 4th hole this morning. still a little tight, but my remaining belly pudge seems to be still shrinking ... slowly. with the fall approaching, i think i'll make a conscious effort to move a bit lower. i know my holiday baking will add a few lbs.

i still use canned beans to shortcut prep time, but i think i am going to switch to dry. i should start watching my sodium and that's about the worst part of any canned vegetable.

IMG_1378.JPG
there are 400mg of sodium in a can (15 oz - 3.5 servings) vs about 27mg in a comparable amount of dry beans.

a bit of sugar in beans, but it is a non-digestible sugar which benefits good bacteria in your colon.
of course the result is sometimes challenging to deal with ...

i wish i could get NASA TV.
news stations are going overboard with these ridiculously obvious graphics that cover nearly a quarter of the screen...!

more ground beef on sale so i made another batch of chili to go right into the freezer. i wanted to check on the fat i could remove (it was 80% lean) so i measured as carefully as i could this time...

IMG_1403.jpg

the fat congeals above what looked at first to be water, but it turns out that there might be some ground up bone because it turns into the same sort of gel you get when making really thick stock. anyway, i weighted that too. i added 1/2 cup water before refrigerating to see if it would separate, but that gel appears to be water soluible (that's that what the bit of water was in the jar i weighed it against) ...

precooking ground beef total = 4.18 lbs.
fat + "other" = 0.855 lbs ===> 0.205 = ~20% (given there was some bits of beef that got scooped out, too)

pretty honest store... rounding up a fraction, well within the procedure error... exactly 80% lean.

a little more math... the 80% lean beef i bought @ $3.97/ lb in actuality turned out to be $4.99/ lb @ 99% lean. ...still a good deal.

you can definitely remove a good amount of fat when you can resort to just pan frying as crumbled. other than chili, it would work out for a tomato based sauce, as well. with some imagination, likely more options.

i've been having a stretch of unusual dieting days. about every 2nd or 3rd morning i've been having a morning bagel and cutting short my IF fast time... but then i just take that day and carefully watch my caloric intake. regardless of fasting time, math is math... i'm not going to store any calories if i keep my intake to at least close to my daily minimum metabolic need. not often easy, but just a few bites of something is often enough of a meal for me... for a few hours. it might be different if i were still in a loss mode, but for maintenance, this seems to be working out ... so far.

here is a picture i got someone to help me take (pre-demic) that i completely forgot about. after my hip operation, a big DON"T was crossing your legs... it could pop the joint out of the socket. "guy" crossed legs (when your lower shin or even ankle rests on the opposite knee) is something i avoid doing even today since it really twists the joint, but after my weight loss, i guess my legs lost enough weight that i'm now able to cross my legs this way. at first i thought it might look too feminine, but watching some TV interviews and just catching some people in general, apparently it's acceptable for a guy. anyway, after a few years of building up the muscle again so it's not really dangerous anymore, i can't help but say it's sort of a comfortable way to sit and something i was never able to do at 200+ lbs.

i believe i may have solved one of my life-long mysteries... where the *&$# do fruit flies come from...? you leave out the remains of a piece of fruit and they seem to magically appear from nowhere. well, for about a week now i've been spending the majority of my time in my garage/basement. it's cooler and there is no lack of work to do. but the first thing i noticed was a few house flies that i didn't feel like chasing, so i moved my bug zapper indoors. later that same day it took care of the house flies, but afterwards it kept "zapping" every 10-15 minutes if not shorter. when i inspected the trap where the corpses fall, it contained a few dozen very small moths and the rest were fruit flies. they must be around all the time, but you only see them when a lot group together around some food. give them long enough and they'll even mate in that area and boom, you have a zillion fruit flies...!!

a few days later now and i still hear a "zap" about 3-4 times a day. i assume they are so small there is no stopping them from getting into a garage. not like that door is anywhere near air-tight.

IMG_1461.jpg

these really work well, btw... there are many similar models. this one is plastic, but seems rugged enough. the cord could be longer, but that's the only operational drawback. i hate killing flying things, but i'm sorry... house flies could have the entire basement (or alternately the entire outdoors) yet they choose to get right in my face. there is no reasoning with them.

if anyone has figured out hunger, please let me know.

this morning... very early this morning, i was having a cup of coffee before i thought i might catch a few hours of sleep. it was 4am and i had fallen asleep in the rocker (this chair is amazingly comfortable for a mostly wooden chair), but not enough sleep to do much good. hungry? yes, i was. i then started to argue with my other self.... luckily the other self won.

route #1... if i had a bagel (it was another day so it would not break that rule) i would have ended my IF for the day.... too early to do any good. i certainly would have enjoyed it... for maybe 10 minutes? what this would have triggered? i would get a rush of carbs which would start an insulin reaction. it wouldn't have been enough calories to do much more than refresh a part of my muscle and liver glucose stores, but for the next few hours i could say adios to burning any fat.

route #2 (the one i chose)... hunger lasted a while. i actually got the bagels out of the fridge, but it took less than a minute for me to put them back. not the easier choice by far. i did manage to catch a few more hours of sleep. hunger? nope, not anymore. i took care of some gardening and decided to go for a walk... just finished about 2 miles. nothing to brag about BUT all that time? i had (actually still have) no local stores. i'm currently on hour 18 of my daily IF. the only thing my body can do right now is burn fat.... there's nothing left.

time for breakfast... maybe.

Life is just a bowl... :) Glad you're luxuriating in summer fruits, my friend!
