Flyer's diary

It is just awful, Flyer. We’re on the other side of the world, but I really feel for all the really good people I know in the US. Our PM is not much better.

584 new COVID-19 cases in the county yesterday... 20% more than the last high 3 days before that. even if i wasn't over 65 and taking an immunosuppressant medication i still wouldn't find this funny. not really worried about the virus itself... maybe a little, but the hospitals are going to be swamped within the month if things do not turn around ...and nobody is expecting this failed federal leadership to do anything differently.

people are going to start dying for need of simple emergency room procedures because there will either be major delays in getting help or there might not even be an available bed to get them to. this could easily get terrifying. the stress on hospital workers at all levels is unimaginable.
Yep, get ready it is coming. Like it or not this is happening all over the US. I think California is in better shape than a lot of states, or I hope you are anyway.

i have to admit, i am probably lucky. i have my retirement income, so that's not changed and i have a grocery store literally just across the street that opens at 6am, so i can avoid crowds. i miss walking down to the beach... not because there are a lot of people... there are some... but there is no place to go. i used to either stop by a local coffee place or a bar if it was after noon, but i also used to go there to relax and socialize ... not really an option now.

i haven't put gas in the car since February and i still have a nearly full tank.

growing up i'm sure i heard more than once that you should only fly the most current U.S. flag, but apparently any "once official" flag is ok. knowing my dad, i'm sure this was a war souvenir. wish i knew more about it.

the 48 star flag was the 2nd longest flown in years from 1912 - 1959. almost a tie, New Mexico became the 47th state in January, 1912 and the next month Arizona became #48... the last state in the continental US. the 48 star flag was replaced in 1959 when Alaska (January, #49) and then Hawaii (August, #50) became states. in 2007, the 50 star flag became the longest flown in U.S. history.

Happy 4th...!

Great flag! Too bad you did not get the back story, it is probably interesting.

I went to school one summer at the University of Southern Mississippi. At that time the state did not observe the 4th of July, but we got Jefferson Davis' birthday off (June 3). I believe that Mississippi has finally accepted the outcome of the war and changed that, I hope so anyway.

Happy 4th!

i wish there were more holidays like this one, though i felt guilty using the flag to cut some shade to my too sunny porch on mornings like yesterday...

it's not as much that something called "fruit" is 100% processed sugar.
it's that the serving size works out to 1.3 pieces ... yeah, sure.

Hey it's not 100% sugar, it also contains Red 40, Yellows 5 & 6, Blue 1 and Titanium Dioxide, all essential nutrients I am sure.

my scale has a tiny switch on the back i never noticed before...

lbs --- kgs --- st.lbs

i guess cob/ corn was just on sale for the 4th... it was back up to 99 cents/ ear today... bummer...!

been waiting a few months for some new file cabinets to show up and they arrived on Sunday...

Dutch Crafters file cabinets.jpg

they'll have to sit in the garage a few more days as i want to paint my mini-office first. finally have a place to de-clutter a few mounds of papers.

i highly recommend DutchCrafters if you want some exceptional quality (actual wood, not pressed board or veneered plywood) furniture ... and not that extravagantly priced. i already have a dining room table and chairs i got from them years ago and i now have the rocker i bought for my aunt who passed away last year.

well, i can't say i didn't see this coming....

it's been weeks since i've been on any walk more than just to the grocery store across the street.
still within my window, but too close to the top.

some of this is probably due to my recent popcorn binging, too.
i don't add butter, but i have to start laying off the heavy handed salt a bit.

Nice furniture, I looked DutchCrafters up, good Amish furniture is hard to beat. Don't need anything now, but will keep it in mind. Do the filing cabinets lock? I think I see a locking mechanism in you picture.

nearly everything offered there has options. from a list, you choose the wood, the finish/ stain, the hardware and some specialty things where appropriate like adding the lock (i did... one lock secures all the drawers.... i even asked them to key them the same and that was taken care of). some options jack up the price.... oak would have been less expensive, but everything else in that room is cherry. the rocker is oak.

closer to breakfast, but i'm still going to work on getting back to the mid 160's.
might lay off bagels for a few weeks.
that always seems to help.

i was curious about the fat content of ground meat once it is cooked and this article presents a pretty good explanation ...

Reducing Fat Levels in Ground Beef

i have been going back and forth between buying ground beef and grinding it myself. when some of the cheaper cuts are on sale, getting the grinder out saves quite a bit. recently i have been having good luck with London Broil. it is usually low priced as it is extremely sinewy, but if you cut it up against the grain, it grinds up easily and from what i get out of the pan, it seems very low in fat content.

things i saw at the market today...

brand name paper products... the world makes sense again...!!

on a sad note...

for the 3rd straight year my biggest strongest plant heads to the mulch pile.
i hate when that happens...!

had some grapes for breakfast this morning. for some reason i thought they had a lot more calories...

seedless grapes.jpg

my guess is that the "handful" i had was about 80 kcals.
also learned what a punnet is... :)

one thing that bothered me... at the same site this was listed, they obviously advertised their own weight loss program. so just for fun i put in my ht/wt @ 5.11 / 168 lbs (it was UK so they wanted stones, but took pound). what was returned was a bit surprising...

weight loss at 168lbs.jpg

Maybe? ... just a little?

apparently they think i should head toward the lowest weight in the "healthy" window.
money, money, money is apparently their bottom line ... slightly dangerous advice if you ask me.

Thanks for the grape calorie thing. Made me have a few grapes yesterday.

Did you find something to do?
