Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

i dont think i have much to offer right now. seems like youve got a kung-fu ninja monkey grip on the whole thing here. but i stil want to say that im glad to see the fight going strong. This match is one I would definitely order on pay-per-view, lol. and have gone to vegas and placed a very large wager on Tom to win by TKO, lol.

Weight: 227.2 - Headed in the right direction, that's for sure!

Food yesterday came to 2,260 calories:
Fat: 68gm, 27%; 11gm saturated, 4%
Carbs: 234 gm, 37%; 40 gm fiber
Protein: 163 gm, 29%
Alcohol: 14gm, 4%

With a NARM of 2,338 calories, plus 1,367 calories from exercise, I ended the day with a deficit of 1,445 calories -- off to a good start.

Happy about the protein intake yesterday, mainly from chicken breast with my salad for lunch, and a big piece of halibut that Marlene made for a delicious dinner.

Today is a plain old cardio day. Strange, I'm kind of hankering for a Cardio Coach workout -- we'll see how I feel later this afternoon.

Sure hope WLF isn't as flaky today!

Thanks, Coach! I have the same feeling about you, by the way. I think you're definitely going to win this battle.

Hey Tom, I was just curious about the food. Its definitely looking good :). I love that I have more time to cook now this summer and can cook healthier because speed isn't an issue. You really eat very well and its something for me to aspire to.

Cannon, WLF was really bad yesterday, but I did leave you a post showing my typical meals, somewhere in the last 2 pages.

I like cooking myself. Part of it is that I can usually make a better meal than I would ever get in a restaurant; part of it is controlling what goes into the final product. When you stop dousing everything with butter and oil, you start noticing the true flavors of what you're eating. In a restaurant, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between spinach and spaghetti squash. Not so when you do it on your own.

Also, we used to make enough to have leftovers. Not any more. We only make enough for a healthy meal. That's especially important when it comes to rice and pasta, where there's a tendency to pile it on.

Tom's right--I really like your food choices :) Especially the fish! And when I cook at home, which I love to do, and I love trying out new things, sometimes I notice my food is somewhat bland, but in a good way, like I can taste certain veggies, or taste the components in my erotic rice, better than if I was at a restaurant where they douse things in butter and oil and whatever! Also, I realize how high in calories the food must be, since my meals are seldom under 400 calories a portion.

I wonder if that's why so many people say they hate veggies...cause untils you get used to eating them without all the butter and sauces (or fried) they do seem almost tasteless...but now I can eat a bowl with a bunch of different steamed veggies mixed together and each one actually does have a unique flavor.

Ohhh....I love veggies...I think that most people eat their veggies overcooked which will make them mushy, tasteless and virutually a waste of healthy nutrients! :)

Workout Log - July 3, 2007

Cardio Coach Press Play (elliptical)
1 hr., 9 minutes
1,141 calories
6.0 miles
Max HR: 160 (95% of max)
Avg HR: 137 (81% of max)

This seemed a bit harder than usual, I guess because I haven't done these workouts in 2 weeks, riding my bike instead.

Cym - exactly, it takes some time to develop some new taste buds, I guess.

Beth - I like almost all of my veggies crunchy, especially asparagus, broccoli, and cauliflower.

Val - I love greens! And also okra!

Weight: 227.0 - the lowest I've been in the last 8 days. Nice!

Food yesterday came in at 2,316 calories:
Fat: 83 gm, 32%; 26 gm saturated, 10%
Carbs: 222 gm, 35%; 27 gm fiber
Protein: 165 gm, 29%
Alcohol: 10 gm, 3%

With my NARM of 2,335 calories and 1,141 calories from exercise, I ended the day with a deficit of 1,160 calories, and a month to date deficit of 2,792 calories.

Today is Weights 2 day (lower body), so I'll be going to the gym around 1 pm before it closes. Then it's off to a family BBQ, a big challenge for me, where there will be TONS of food. A lot of it will be good stuff, but there will be a lot of temptation there, too. We'll see how I do.

For all my WLF friends in the US, happy July 4th! And for all my non-US WLF friends, my hope is that one day the U.S. will be a model citizen in the world instead of a pariah.

Unfortunately today is a chilly cloudy day, so I'm still debating if I'll go to the BBQ I was invited to in a park at the beach. It'll be even chillier there.

I've been doing the same thing with the food lately. I go to the market on the corner every 2 or 3 days and get 2 cartons of blueberries, one of strawberries, and one of raspberries. I then resupply my pressurized whipped cream and this is the most yummy and fiber-ridden snack. I feel like I'm eating ice cream. The chicken patties I've been eating with 1/4 avocado on half a whole grain roll and I season the patties like crazy so the seasonings get browned and crunchy (rosemary, chili powder, onions, adobe), then I melt on some pepper jack cheese (450 calories). I just had one and it is so much better than anything I can get at a restaurant.

Good for you on the losses!

Hi Blancita - hope you had a great 4th!
Thanks, jimb12.
=====================
Today was Weights Day 2. I really had to drag myself into the gym -- didn't feel like going at all.

Time: 29 minutes
Calories: 332

Still, I was happy to be able to go up another 5 lbs. on the squat, to 215 lbs. for the 3x5, and to 205 lbs. for the 1 x 8. I was barely able to get up on the last rep, though. Increased deads by another 10 lbs, to 2 x 85 lb. dumbbells for the 3 x 5's and 2 x 80 lb. db's for the 1 x 8 set. The biggest problem with those is grip. I have a bad tendon in my right hand, so sometimes it's hard to hold onto stuff that heavy with it.

Lying leg curls continue to give me problems, mainly because my calves keep cramping up at the end of the workout. I'm doing reverse lunges with body weight only for now, until my balance is much improved.

Overall, not a great workout, but I'm glad I pushed myself to get it done.

Now it's off to the family BBQ. Let's see if I can keep myself under control!

How was the BBQ? That was an extraordinary amount of discipline to get to the gym on a national holiday, I must tell you. Highly admirable.

Weight 229.6 - up almost 3 pounds from yesterday. :( I know most of that's water, although I did lose my restraint a bit at the family BBQ. I also had too many margaritas with salt on the rims, more ribs than I should have, and even ate the ice cream cake. But guess what? I don't really feel that bad about it. Why? Because:
a) I know today I'm getting back on track
b) A lot of that is water. I ended up with a surplus for the day of less than 2,000 calories, not 10,000 calories.
c) I'm going on another long bike ride this weekend.
d) I have big "blips" like this all the time.

Anyway, I had a good time. I even went in the pool and didn't feel totally embarrassed about the way I looked. That was a first in many, many years.

I didn't keep exact track of calories at the BBQ, but I figure a safe bet is that I had 3,500 calories. I don't really think I consumed that much, but I'll play it safe, so I don't fool myself.

Blancita - as you can see from the above, my discipline is in tatters on the bathroom floor this morning!

Yeah, I can relate to this, Tom....my plan was shot to hell yesterday....and my weight is reflecting it in water, too....back on track too, today.....onward! :)

Hi, Beth & Bruce. I'm thinking about doing a century this weekend, and a good part of ti will be at Camp Pendleton. You guys care to join me?
