Dust yourself up and try again

Yep same quandary happened to me! Muscle mass > weight on the scales? I'm just shocked that it seems to happen so quickly? How did you keep to your eating whilst away on work?

Re: Hiding the scales. This certainly struck a chord with me. My husband of 39 years, who knows me better than I know my self; disappeared this morning with the bathroom scales under his arm. He said 'You'll get them back next Friday ready for your weigh in'
He is quite right, come Tuesday I'd be off and on 'em all day

Hey Amber. The only thing I know of as to why your weight went up and measurements went down is because you are building muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and with that you are still burning fat but the new muscles that you are gaining are being replaced. Awesome job kiddo, Keep it up

I just saw your post with the measurements that everyone missed :)

That should make you very happy- after all, realistically we are all here to look and feel better- right? It is not about some arbitrary number on a scale that could fluctuate wildly or be broken or just not right.
If you are losing inches then you are doing what you need to do. The number on the scale has no choice but to fall in accordance with everything else. Hell, if I could stay the same weight I am now but look good and be as fit as I want to I would be happy.

I like your workouts. You are doing a good combo of cardio and resistance.
Nice job amberlace- you are doing the work :)

Reloaded, so good of you to visit my journal!! Thanks. Thanks for being a sounding board. In theory we know these things, because we read and are often here to learn from each other. I need to really get over this scale-number state of thinking. Thanks for the reality-check. This is why I love this forum so much.

Hope you're doing well. Off to see your progress now. :)

Hey Amberlace, I'm loving your routine and dedication in journaling it! Way to go!
Weight gain as you put on muscle is what happens. Trust the way your clothes fit and not the scale and stick to it. I'm going to keep checking on you for my motivation so you have to stick with it ;) haha.

Thanks KeepsWorking. Going to go over to see how you are doing.

I did some digging, and it may not be muscles I'm building yet. It may just be water retention. We'll see in the next few weeks.

I love that your hubby is on board with this. So important to have support in this journey, esp from your loved ones. Let me know how hiding scales go? It's also a fun game you and hubby can play. Weee......:)

Thanks GGH. So good to hear from you. So I did some digging and it turns out that it may be water retention. Let me see if I understand this correctly. So when we start working out- our muscles tear a little bit (not in a bad way because they heal), body retains water to heal these muscles. This can go for as long as 4-6 weeks. While you're losing your inches, you are still holding on to water, which means your weight doesn't really go down. Then, in 6weeks or so, your body adjusts to the shock you have given and the weight starts dropping. I think this may be what is happening. I think muscles build as we work out but the muscle building is slower than we think it happens. I have only really been working out serious for about two weeks and it takes a few months to build real muscles. But you are right, muscles are denser than fat so eventually that may happen. We'll see. Not sure if I am understanding this correctly, so if any veterans happen to chance upon my journal and have a more *intelligent* answer, would appreciate a response. I think this could benefit us all.

Yippies, Saturday!!!

I decided to take it easy today. No gym. But did go last night. Here's what I did.

65 mins or 5km on the elliptical
10 mins on the stationary bike
30 mins crunches, leg lifts (three bloody sets), bicep workouts with dumbells. By the time I was done I was :ack2:

Food was ok too:

Toast and veggies with egg for breakfast
Dumplings for lunch
I was so hungry so I had some quinoa and veggies for second lunch
Then nachos for dinner with some lemonade and a glass of wine.

Today I've had:

B: Toast for b'fast
L: brown rice, fish, miso soup and all kinds of veggies for lunch/brunch
Also indulged on some chocolate cake today. It was so yum. Well worth every bite.
D: Will prolly be veggies and some rolls. A small soup. Yum.

Hope all are having wonderful wonderful weekend. I am travelling again from Sunday night, with very sporadic internet. Hopefully I can stay on track with food/exercise.

It was hard to not go crazy with food when you're traveling. I was also dependent on other people's schedules, which made it harder. I tried really hard. I slipped a couple of times, but dusting myself off and trying again. :) Everything's a learning experience, eh? How are you doin? Hope weekend goes well!!

Stay on track Amber! We can't let travelling or work worm it's way in and get in the way of our results! :D Let us know how you get on.

A little grumpy today. I have reasons.

So I was off on a trip on Saturday night (not Sunday night like I initially thought, ugh). Got back late last night (Monday eve). First, the trip was a total waste of time. As I said, I was on someone else's schedule, which meant I had no control over a few things. I did ok on food, but with no exercise I was just feeling like sh*& all the time. We traveled far for work that didn't happen. I am grumpy that I missed my workouts and for what? Ugh. Second, I haven't lost a single lbs in the last three weeks. In fact, I have gained a couple of lbs, which refuses to budge. Third, I went to the gym this morning thinking I will do about an hour of cardio- 35 mins elliptical 35 mins treadmill. But I went with the intention of running, and I couldn't run. I just couldn't do it. So I brisk walked for 32 mins at 5m/hr. The only thing that made me happy was that I was a little faster on the elliptical and was sweating like ugh. Fourth, my trainer said I am no upping my exercise like I should. She said I should be able to do more leg lifts (more sets) by now and more crunches. Which made me super grumpy. It almost felt like she was saying I am not working hard enough. That really really made me feel like ugh.

Ok. Rant over.

I thought about it on my way to work this morning. I went home to shower and change and BF saw that I was really not in the mood to have a conversation. But he is amazing. He made me breakkie, sat down with me and after about 10 mins of silence the floodgates of rant opened up. He said I was being hard on myself. He did mention that I am getting smaller (he would know-haha) but mostly he loves that I am so cheerful and happy and singing around the house. I thought about it, this was the first grumpy morning in over a month. So I decided to dust myself off of the -ve energy and start my day.

On the positive side, I don't have to travel in a month or so, so I am really really going to concentrate on getting back on track.

Exercise for 04/29

35 mins on elliptical
30 mins on the treadmill (brisk walk at 5m/hr)
Stretches- three sets of leg lifts, three sets of side bend with a rod, three sets of exercise with dumbells. 200 jumping jacks. Not sure how many calories that would amount to, but I was spent and drenched in sweat.

Food plan for today:

B: Toast with veggies and egg (BF lovingly made it)
L: Going out to lunch with a college friend and he wants to do Indian (so rice, my favorite veggie curries).
S: Peanuts and a small bag of popcorn
D: Big salad with goat cheese (yum, I can't wait to make it).

Hope ya'll are having a good Tuesday.

Thanks NotAUser. I tried. Was ok with food, but did zero exercise. I am writing these few days off as bad experience and moving on. Hope you're doing well.

Hang in there Amber. We have to have the odd bad day to appreciate the good ones. You are so committed I'm sure this is just a blip.

Hang in there kiddo and stay positive. We all have bad weeks. Even a couple in a row. The last thing you want to do is get frustrated with not seeing results. I've seen a lot of people who got in a rut just like you and decided to screw it cause they figured it was a failure so they resorted back to their old ways.

Stay sharp and on point and most of all stay motivated. Don't look at it as a set back, look at it as a challenge.

And as always you have people here that will always be available to help you. We are all here to help each other.

Thank you, Dumpy. I needed that. You're so sweet. Back to being positive and pounding the weight away. Hope you're having a good day!!

Thank you GGH, I really needed that. You guys are the reason that I keep going at it. And what a great advice- take this as a challenge. I love challenges. It keeps life interesting. And thank so much for being there. You rock. :Angel_anim:

Happy hump day all!! :)

Today is going MUCH MUCH better. I am back to being positive and happy.

Exercise:

Elliptical 70 mins (my speed is getting better)
Treadmill (brisk walk at 5m/h) - 20 mins
Leg lifts- three sets of thirty each, worked my arm with dumbells (three sets), did some jumping jacks, side bends (100). By the time I was done my workout clothes were drenched with sweat. Feeling so much better today. Tomorrow I do more. Yay!!

I stayed on track with food last night. Here's the plan for today:

B: 1 Toast with a sliver of butter, veggies, fruits (one cup)
S: String cheese (non-fat).
L: Quinoa, sauteed veggies and a small salad with boiled eggs, tuna, black pepper, olives and some olive oil
S: Rice cakes with small non-fat yogurt
D: Veggie soup

Thanks GGH!!!

Quick update as I have a ton of things to do at work today and not enough time. I am slammed with meetings back to back.

Went to the gym this morning-
Did: 60 mins elliptical, 20 mins stationary bike. Worked on upper body area today. Lots of arm stuff with dumbells. Took a break from jumping jacks as it was hurting my ankle a little bit. I did that for almost 40 mins. Again, was drenched in sweat.

Need to get back to running again, but everytime I think about going on the treadmill I want to puke. I am going to take a break from it a little bit. I need to rethink this whole running thing.

Food so far:
B: Toast with some cheese (yea, it was that kinda day).
S: three oatmeal biscuits
L: Prolly a salad (not sure).
S: Mango
D: A big bowl of veggie soup

Also we did measurements and weigh-ins today. No movement on the weight front :banghead::banghead::banghead:

But I have lost .1/2" in my tummy, .2 inch on my chest (yay), no movement on my hips and thighs but my calves grew by an inch?? What is??

Hope all are doing well. Will sneak back in to check on your progress when I get some breathings space.
