Cohen's Lifestyle Cohens Lifestyle Support - New

Prefix for Cohen's Lifestyle
Hi Sal:)

Welcome to the forum and to the Cohens program. It really does work. I started December 2006 and finished March 2007.....I lost 15kg. I had gained weight after having my 2 children.....I had tried many program's prior but could never stick to them.

But Cohens was different - for me not having to worry about exercising as well as dieting was the key....I could do the cohens program 100% without stressing about fitting exercise in. (that is something that will need to be incorporated in later though) Cohens is a very regimented plan as you will see......to succeed you have to follow all details of it to a "T". It does work I felt the weight falling off me within 2 weeks and my wiast line reducing.....and because you can see the weight coming off it really keeps you motivated to keep losing. Try not to deviate if possible....Cohens is not a social program...when I went out i took all my meals with me. I didn't go to any restuarants...but if I did find myself compromised while out I stuck to lettuce and chicken and always carried my water, crackers and fruit. I became quiet anti-social during the program, but it is a small price to pay when you feel your clothes dropping off you and your self esteem building. For me carrying extra weight not only affects me physically but mentally....and by that mean I lose alot of self confidence and I become depressed and self concious.

I wish you every success Sal.....we are a "very" supportive bunch here so don't feel afraid to vent anything here to us. Why don't you open up a Diary and that way you can record you day to day goings on while on plan......you can open up about anything if you wish even if it's non - Cohen related.

So once again.....welcome and I wish you every success.

Sam:)

Thanks for the advise

Hi Sam

Thanks for your advise, yes the plan is to try to stick to it 100%, because I really want to see the results that I have been reading about and it seems any deviation will slow that down and the quicker the better.

writing in a diary sounds like a good idea, a way to help keep myself focused on my goal.

I am sitting here at the moment enjoying a rum and coke, this will be one of my hardest things giving up the few drinks that I like to have with my husband a few nights a week after a hard day.

Anyway have to go, my daughter is screaming as she is hungry and I am also in the process of getting rid of the dummy. So she is not very happy. Better get in the kitchen and organise dinner so I can then get her in the bath and bed so I can get a break from the constant winging.

Look forward to getting to know all of you in here, talk soon.

**Peeps in**

Ummm Hi everyone, I am new here, I am in the waiting for program stage at the moment. I am a 40 (soon to be 41) year old mum of 3 with only one left at home from NSW. I am a Gym gunkie by necessity not choice LOL

I have PCOS and text book insulin resistance. I started my journey at 105kg 5 years ago and lost 17kg through a 1000cal/day diet and 6hours of exercise a week. Which I still do but have not lost anything for 18months now. However I have maintained the loss LOL.

It's almost a year since my Dad died and I have been feeling it very badly lately. I met up with a friend at the gym whom I haven't seen for 6 months, she has PCOS like me and like me was on a plateau with her weight for around 2
years, but on Wednesday she blew me away, she had lost 30kg since I saw her last. It was amazing, she looked fantastic, no loose skin, her complexion was glowing she looked great. I asked her how she had broken the plateau and she told me she had been following the Cohens Lifestyle program.

At work on thursday I looked them up and saw it was $680 plus $20 for the blood test. I debated with myself all day. I drove to my hair appointment debating with myself and also asking Dad and God for advice on what I should do.

I had my hair done and left the salon, I needed to go to the bathroom and so I ducked into the local pub which is run by a friend of mine to use the bathroom. As i walked out he said "you think this is a public bathroom, you come in and
pee and don't even buy a drink" teasing me as he always had. So I said OK then I will put $5 in your poker machine here then will that make you happy. So I put in my $5 and pushed the 25c a spin button, i had used up all but $1.25 with no
luck when the door opened. I looked up and in walked a man built like my dad wearing the same shirt we buried him in ( a red striped polo shirt ). I panicked and started to cry, thinking I just wanted to leave and go home I hit the 5x button to use up all my money in one push. I got the free spins and when they finished the total in the machine to collect was $700, no more, no less.

So I signed up the next day LOL.. and here I am waiting ....... patiently of course.

HEY! TW... I think it was meant to be! Seriously.... God (whoever you believe) was trying to get your attention!!!

I really like your story! That was totally awesome!

You will love this program! It has changed my life!!! I have seen much slower losses than many people but nothing has stopped me and in 9 monmths I have lost over 40kgs and with only 3 deviations! I think thats pretty cool. I will never ever go back to the way I was and the longer it has taken me the longer I have to learn the principles and make better habits.

I look forward to following your journey!! It will be challenging... but if you stick to it and decide early on not to deviate ... you will find that ZONE... that will help you get through anything!!

Hi

Hi, i'm new on the cohens diet... tom's the end of my first week. Its going ok however am missing tasty food... usually have alot of sauces in my food so having trouble adjusting to the new taste....

someone told me that using extra virgin olive oil is allowed however the programme says strictly olive oil spray...Is EVOO allowed???

You guys are amazing, hearing and reading all your stories motivate me more! thanks heaps!!!

And threading water, you are amazing!!!! all the best, can't wait to hear how your diet goes....

Also, last question, how do i get the weight lost track bar that some of you guys have at the bottom of your posts?

Thanks

Hi KiwiKismet

Yesterday was the end of my first week, and I have lost a total of 4.6kg for the week, I am over the moon :):hurray:

I am missing sauces and also bread pasta and rice. I was such a carb junkie. But after the results I have has in my first week it has so been worth it.

I am finding this forum very supportive and help to keep me motivated. I would love to hear what your goals are on Cohens. I have also found opening my own Diary has help me aswell with being able to report how I am going and getting the support and encouragement from the other member is wonderful.

If you want one of the weight loss bars, just click on one of ours and it will take you to the website where you can create one.

Good luck with it all, sending skinny thoughts your way :)

Hi KiwiKismet, EVOO is not allowed, but a little of the spray is. A good Balsamic vinegar became my flavouring for almost anything that I cooked. I really did pretend it was Soy! It's so versatile. I used to add a little to my stir-fries towards the end of cooking, mix it with my teaspoon of low-fat mayo allowed per day, plus garlic salt, pepper/salt to make a delicious salad dressing. I still do this & love it. Cheers, Cate.

Hi Kate & Sal

Thanks heaps for your replies... Its amazing how much it helps just to talk to people who understand what your going through. My husband's been really supportive but its not the same as being the person on the diet.

Spent most of yesterday shopping for food and spices and for a food blender for this diet. It does take quite a bit of preperation eh however i quite enjoy being organised...

Just wanted to share something i had today. I bought a mango yest and cut it into the allowed portions and froze it. This morning I blended it in with my yourgurt (allowance).. was yum!!! was like ice cream, perfect for summer..hehehe...

Sal; 4.6kg in the first week wow!, I lost 3.3kg. The weight lost is a huge motivator and even though i know we;re not supposed to be watching the scale, its just nice to see the results eh. I'm on Cohen's because I've been fighting with my weight for quite a few years. As a teenager I was always average weight, however once i hit my 20's i started gaining weight. In the past few years do to intense dieting periods and periods where i would binge on food, my wieghts yoyo'd over the years and quite badly. I got married last july and since then have put on 15 kg's. I guess the simple fact that i have problems walking to work due to the extra weight and that its affecting my health scared me enough to want to do something more.... How are you finding it, especially with a young child, was the first week exhausting?

Thanks for the recommendation Cate, will deff try Balsamic vinegar, it sounds good...

New thread alert!!!!!!

Hi everyone:D:D

Just a quick note to let you know I have introduced a new thread called "Strategies for post weight loss"......... please, please everyone oldies and newbies please put down whatever you are doing now to keep the weight off (how are you maintaining post Cohens). All ideas would be welcome. If any of the newbies have any stratgies for when they lose the weight please jot them down here for all of us to share.

I am in the process of doing affirmations to get myself prepared for not going back to my old ways of eating. As most of you know I lost my weight successfully with Cohens in March 2007 and then I slowly i started p[utting it back on. I am now back on plan and I want to succeed not only with the weight loss now but for the rest of my life.

So please post your thoughts, ideas of anything you have read or watched or heard. Every little bit helps.

Sam:)

Hi people, need some advice, when they say use lemon as part of allowance, what does that mean? does that mean if i use 1/4 of a lemon for food i'm not allowed 1 fruit? or am i allowed 3/4 of a fruit.. just think its harsh to have to subsitute a whole fruit for a little lemon.... fruits are a fav part of my day....

KiwiKismet, Technically yes, it does mean that. Often though, you can then cut back a little on other fruits easily. For example 1 actual kiwi fruit is usually a lot less than 1 fruit, mango I always weighed, so you can just have a little less in weight etc. It's not about being hard on you, it's about thinking & acting upon every little thing we put in our mouths. It will help you to stick to it once you get used to the idea and then when you get to goal weight you are so used to thinking about what you eat that you will be much more aware & hopefully better equipped to keep the weight off. To me the best thing about it was that it is black & white, no grey areas. Cheers, Cate.

---- Background ----

What is the Cohen Diet

Dr Cohen lives in South Africa and according to the information in the website was a doctor specializing in reproductive medicine. Reading between the lines it appears that in his medical practice he noted that many women needed to lose weight to regain their fertility and he devised this diet after much refinement and testing over a few years. But it not just for women, the author of this post is a man, a man who was obese and is now just overweight and who will be in normal range in another 6 weeks :). For the author Cohen is not a false hope.

1st PersonalDiet and in Australia it is Cohen's Lifestyle Clinic

Attributes of Cohen diet.

  • Low Carb, most carbs are in the fruits that are eating during the day, 2 or 3 servings and each serving is around 170grams. eg 170 grams of kiwi (2 medium kiwi) or 1 medium apple. Starches (wheat, potatos, beans, bread, donuts, rice, pasta ) are very strickly limited, zero except for 5 or 6 small crackers per day
  • Based on your profile, height, weight, and blood test profile (Urea, Total Protein, Electrolytes etc) Dr Cohen will prepare a personal weight loss plan (basically how much of what can you eat when) for your needs. Marketing material of the Cohen diet website suggests by following the eating plan you will "trigger" the Human Growth Hormone and Seratonin production which will create a rapid loss in weight.
  • All meals, and all foods are weighed to within 1gram and prepared. There is no room for a little more or a little less, 120grams of chicken means we must eat 120grams exactly of chicken (or Turkey) breast.
  • Vegetables Around a dozen or so types of vegetables all of which are non-starchy vegetables. Spinach, Asparagus, Onions, Tomato etc. These are eaten with each meal and weighed as mention above to 1gram.
  • Meals must be eating 5 or more hours apart, this apprently gives your lots of time at low blood sugar level.
  • No Alcohol.
  • No mandatory exercise. I keep active and the more a lose the more active I am becoming. Dr Cohen recommends that if you dont exercise now, dont start, start after you have lost weight. Reading between the lines he doenst want 300lbs people dropping dead of heart atacks trying to run up mountains. However if you currently exercise you dont need to stop.
  • There is zero room for any alternative foods or even extra portions. You must eat the amounts that are specified and only from the list of acceptable foods. These are known as *Deviations*, you deviated from the Cohen plan. Naturally if you eat out you cannot make sure the proportions and food types are correct ie this is a deviation. For those who need to eat out frequently or socialise with friends or business partners, this is the biggest issue with following the diet.
  • Because of the higher % protein intake for many you dont feel (very) hungry for long periods of the day. Note that the actual amount of protein consumed is very much in the normal range for American and Australian diets.

What I would eat in a typical day

  • Breakfast: 175 grams low fat yogurt mixed with 2 diced kiwi fruit, sweatener. 2 Nabisco crackers, Black coffee
  • Lunch: 125 grams Chicken and 115grams of vegetables, on a work day I would have it as a soup (so I can bring it to work and warm in a microwave) and on non work day I would have it grilled with the 115grams of vegatables as fresh salad. Another 2 crackers
  • Dinner: 140grams of tuna that I grill and have with 100grams of stir fry vegetables (fried without oil in a non-stick pan). Other days maybe 130grams of lean steak or 120 grams tofu. Another 2 crackers.
  • Lots and lots of water 3~4 liters per day drunk at room temp, around 2 liters before lunch, 1 in afternoon, 1 at night.

Actually Cohen eating is dead boring, and as night follows day, I have lost and am losing weight around 1.5KG/week (3lbs), for the last 12 weeks.

Would you say that this would work in finally dropping those last stubborn 10-15 pounds? It seems I can't get them off as easily as the first 130.

Hi Everyone

Just started this diet and i have to say, i am not a big fan of red meat.... had lunch today and hated it. It has got to get better i am sure.
But i am excited about starting over and getting back on the horse. More exited about getting the weight off once and for all.

Any tips on avoiding read meat?

Hi Invariant and fatgirl......Welcome.

Invaraint
.....yes is the answer to your question. Cohens was the only weightloss program which worked for me to lose those 20-15kg that wouldn't budge much on other diets. I lost 15kg in just over 3 months...it would have been sooner but I had some slight deviations.

FG....sorry I can't call you the full word(I hope you don't mind).
If you don't like read meat Cohens has the vegetarian alternative plan.
You should check this out with your clinic....it will only set you up for failure if you are not enjoying what you are eating.

Hope this helps ladies.

Sam:)

New to Cohen

The forum has become my recent obsession +) I thought instead of reading, I will like to share.

My first weighing before I started the diet was ard 75kg. can't remember the exact. But I started two weeks later after i get my blood test result. The wait for result is over the Chinese New Year holidays, I am guilty that I had too much to eat during the festive holidays and I wanted to enjoy to the fullest before the diet start. On the day that I got my blood test result I weighed about 77.5. gracious me, thats bout 2.5 kg more.

I am third day to my diet. And I just weigh, its the night 9.20pm now. I weigh bout 75.2. Back to the original weight =)

I am hoping I can lose another 2-3 kg this week.

Carol
