BugDude is back, and has a plan

4/17 Rest Day

Had an early meeting out of town, but knew I would be back early afternoon. I intended to ride but had no energy. Saving up for a longer ride tomorrow.

I may have mentioned this before but there is an interesting read called "Heft on Wheels" about a guy who used cycling to lose weight. He's pretty funny and still a mess so I related well.

4/18....30.41 miles....2 hrs 29 mins....12.3 mph....3466 calories

Good long ride today, and I'm beat!!! My butt is sore from riding that long. The first 23 miles was no problem. I was averaging 13 mph. The last 7 miles kicked my butt!!! It brought my average down a lot. On one hand I think about shortening my long rides to 23 miles since I can do that comfortably, but on the other hand that last 7 miles of struggle is where you get a lot of growth and training. That pushing beyond comfort is the good stuff. I can certainly accomplish the same thing in shorter rides by going faster. But it's good to mix it up, some longer and slower, some shorter and faster, and some where you do both. I thought about playing golf today too, but that's not going to happen. I'm wiped out. It was also 86* and 70% humidity today and I rode mid-day. As it starts to get hotter I'm going to have to ride early mornings and do shorter and faster rides. I put down a ton of water today and am still putting it down at home. Think I'll go get in the pool if I can muster up the energy.

Wow! That's a long ride! I hope you have a cushy bike seat!! The pool would probably feel lovely on your muscles after such a ride!

4/19 Rest Day

I was so tired I didn't sleep good, which seems backwards, but got past the optimum point I guess. My wife has been showing me yoga moves to stretch my hips this morning. They seem to take it the worst. Feeling ok after stretching all morning but not great. Think I'll play golf and then do a short easy ride later. This stuff is rough on an old guy.

Update: Played golf, shot a 75. I had 11 holes I putted for birdie, 9 of which were fairly short, and only made 1. I kept leaving myself above the hole. Then it started raining as soon as I got home so no ride today. I'll jump back on it in the morning.

I get that sometimes when I work out. Even when I work out what seems like fairly early, it sometimes inhibits sleep (which I agree, seems so backwards!)

4/20....10.13 miles....48 minutes....12.7 mph....1180 calories

My legs were still pretty fatigued from Saturday but I pushed through it.

4/21....10.09 miles....46 mins....13.2 mph

I got on the scales this morning and...298 lbs (-28 lbs)!!! That's my first goal, under 300. So my approach is working, just got to stick with it.

Congratulations for reaching your first goal. Your progress is wonderful and reading your diary is very inspiring. Don't stop now; you've got this!

Thank you carrie. I am confident that I've "got this." My plan works. Mathematically, lifestyle, enjoying my exercise of choice, and the results all are a recipe for ongoing success. I'm eating good food, and food I like. I am also working in goodies at times too as well as some alcohol. When I have some higher calorie days I limit the damage and get back on track the next day. I don't let it derail me. I also don't feel deprived either. My motivation is focused on biking and I feel like a boss with what I'm accomishing there. I'm feeling great and have many facets of life on the right tracks. Now it's just a matter of continuing my processes and letting the weight take care of itself.

BugDude, I am so proud of you for reaching less than 300 lbs. I bike every day to get to work and back, and it is so fun listening to music or audiobooks. You bike way more than me, though! I agree that biking and eating healthy is a really good combination to lose weight. And since you don't feel deprived, then you can keep chugging along. High five!

Thank you k, MR, and cate!!! It's a great feeling of accomplishment to reach a significant milestone goal. I'm looking forward to more goals reached in the months ahead!!! I'm not going to worry much about an end goal for a while. Just keep focusing on interim goals and biking. Considering biking is a lifestyle change, an activity that will be a central part of the rest of my life, there really isn't an "end". Just continuing. So I won't think in terms of end goal, just goals with no end.

4/22....10.13 miles....46 minutes....13.1 mph....1209 calories

An uneventful good paced morning. Very nice weather, not warm and not cold. 13 mph is beginning to be a comfortable pace for morning 10 milers.

Way to go Buggy! I remember thinking that I weigh 2 something. That's what dudes are supposed to weigh. So here we are just a couple a dudes that weigh 2 something. Nice!

It's so interesting to see how everyone views their weight losses and what people finds works for them and what doesn't. I have a tendency to focus on the end goal, just can't wait to get there. You choose to focus on the here and now, which, admittedly is probably a better way to go about it!
