Thanks for dropping in Lamaria
I will try to check in on you on your thread.
Well guess what? The weight I gained last weekend is gone...268.8 this morning!
I am now able to exercise long enough to pay for a few extra calories.
A small victory!

Congratulations! Not just because of the loss but mainly because your body is able to do more, which is pretty cool.

I am back from the wedding trip and I have had my Dr. appt. I did not get the great Dr. visit I had hoped for.
My H1C diabetes # was only slightly improved and my blood pressure was actually up. What the crap? My weight at the office was 271 when it had been 268 at home. This was the lowest weight I had been since I became his patient 6 years ago when I weighed 336. At least that was kinda good. Here is what floored me. He talked to me about gastric sleeve surgery. I am overweight but I thought that was for people who were like 400lb. I dont want to have surgery. This shocked me. I told him I wasnt through trying the hard way yet. So I have some renewed resolve. I simply must must must prioritize and persevere enough to get a significant additional amount of weight off. He told me that I should be 185 according to the charts. I have not weighed 185 since 7th grade. I was very fit and a college athlete at 243. I dont carry that much muscle mass anymore but 185 at 6'1" ??? I am taking my daily calorie allotment to 1400 with no cheating. I have my exercise tolerance up so that will continue. I am out of time. I must do this now. Diabetes is a killer and I am losing ground to it. I know of no other way but to attack this problem. Surgery is not an option for me. Im gonna do this the hard way.
New goal:
I turn 50 in 140 days. I will lose 40lb by then. I will weigh 233 on the docs scales. In order to do this I must burn an average of 1050 calories more than I consume for 140 days.

He talked to you about surgery because you have an weight related health problem. They call it a comorbidity and they have standards based on BMI or weight that are different with or without comorbidity.

I'm with you on not wanting surgery. My best advice is reduce the processed foods as much as possible. They are high in sodium and generally have a high glycemic index. As you know, reducing calories and increasing activity is the only way to lose weight but eating fewer processed carbs and less salt are healthy choices for you regardless of the calories you are eating. Also drink tons of water. Whatever ails you staying well hydrated helps.

Don't push too hard especially now that summer is here to stay. If you end up sick or injured from pushing too hard you lose ground. I typing this with a knee brace on one leg and a bandage on the other. I need to take my own advice for sure.

Work hard, but get the nutrition and rest that you need.

Don't let the doctor's concern minimize your achievements. You've come a long way. Keep it up!

Thanks Q
I have never tried to cut back on salt. I bet that could help my blood pressure. I am about to take a hard look at the glycemic index of what I eat. Up to now I have only counted calories.

Cutting back on salt and losing weight the healthy way sounds a lot better (to me, no doctor) than surgery. If only because after surgery you STILL have to keep a strict diet, you just feel sick of you overeat. And if you overeat regularly (which most of the people I know who have had it have done) you´ll get a distended esophagus and bad reflux. But then: I probably hear only the negative stories... Wishing you the best of luck on your efforts!

Thanks for the positive words Lamaria! Im gonna need a lot of positive thought and actions to get this done.
So Im thinking about lowering my salt. Anybody got an idea of something I could substitute for beef Jerky as a snack? I crutch on jerky a lot cause its no carbs and not many calories and well...its meat! (maybe its a guy thing). But its loaded with salt. I have a dehydrater maybe I could try to make some low salt jerky. hmmm what to season it with?

I´m no expert on jerky but... Isn´t the salt the thing that preserves it and makes it jerky? I don´t think it´s a guy thing (except culturally), our bodies just tend to adapt to salt really easily. The good news is that getting OFF salt is a matter of habit too, after a while you won´t miss it.

Hi Brawny!
I love your spirit, attacking the glycemic index and lowering your cals when doc's appt. wasn't as well as expected. That's how winners do! I would probably inhale a bag of wine gums.
About the jerky, we don't have that in Denmark, but I'm happy with seeds and nuts, they are low carb to and you can season as you like or make your own bars. I bake LCHF muffins and just get one out of the freezer.

Good ideas guys thanks. I would have to get used to unsalted nuts but I bet I could do that.

Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it's always your choice.

Oh you poor Danes!

You could make jerky that's spicy but not salty. If that's not your thing you could use sage, Mrs. dash, or any herbs you like. The good thing is that with your own dehydrator you can season the jerky in a lot of different ways and dry a bunch of small batches at once and then have a taste test. That way you don't end up with a big bag of bleh. LaMaria is right about the salt curing the jerky, but you can keep it in the freezer and it will still keep at room temp for a week or more if dried well. I've made venison jerky that was very spicy but with little salt. Of course the spices help preserve the meat too.

What about sage, garlic, onion, crushed red pepper, and black pepper? That's what I use for my venison breakfast sausage and I love it. It might work for jerky. You could use enough water to make a paste to "marinate" the sliced meat rather than just a dry rub.

Lowering salt is a great idea- has amazing health benefits. Maybe try munching on both? Homemade jerky (with Q's yummy recipe) for the morning snack and unsalted nuts for the evenings? Unsalted nuts shouldn't be difficult to get in the States.

Q- great ideas. I am gonna pull that dehydrator that I bought during a weak moment from a late night info-mercial and see if I can come up with something I can enjoy. I will post my good or bad results

Report on the day:
Calories- 1500
Rode stationary bike 60 minutes and 17.02 miles
Probably 1500-2000 deficit
Durn near a perfect day.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when I die, they'll say, 'Well, he looks good doesn't he.'

After my perfect day yesterday. No scale movement. Why do I weigh every day? I know that if I keep it up a day or two more, my body will eventually turn lose of a pound or two....Gonna exercise like a crazy man (well a crazy fat man anyway) tonight.

LETS LOSE SOME WEIGHT PEOPLE!! Who is with me?

I AM!! Just gave myself a tell off, to get in and stay in gear. I weighed in at 30th of June and 1th of July and thinking about trying a week or two before fetching the scale from the cabinet again. It's hot and summer time, retaining water is very common and I do not want it to mess with my mood and motivation.

Brawny if you're having problems with blood glucose [I'm not really sure if i got it right] upping your fiber intake can help you blunt the glycemic response. Maybe getting a higher percentage of your calores from fats (things like avocados, nuts, etc) can help you too.

LETS LOSE SOME WEIGHT PEOPLE!! Who is with me?

I'm with you as well! Let's do this. :)

Thanks Clarissa and AthalaRanger
I am trying to alter my diet besides just calorie counting. Old habits are hard to break. I did a veggie steak stir fry tonight with peas, fresh green beans, red and yellow peppers lean steak strips onion and a small amount of rice. I added some cilantro, pepper and garlic powder for seasoning and ok I admit a small bit of salt but much less than I would normally add. It was a big success!
Then a bit later I crawled on the ol stationary bike. Everyone was gone but me. I fired up the iPod and rode that sucka 22 miles in 80 minutes! That's a P.R. For me.
Calorie total for the day was 1500.
I dare that scale not to move soon!

You rocked the day and the scale will soon loose the battle!
I couldn't help myself, I sneakpeaked the scale and am down 2 lbs. Putting it away now to not mess with my head.

Wow, you´re really killing it! I want your dinner, can you not make a bit more and leave some in your diary for hungry visitors?

Hi Brawny
My husband loves beef jerky but hates all the preservative and salt that is in them

he buys beef roast and slices it then he marinates it overnight in this

2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons garlic powder or 2 cloves smashed, minced garlic
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

then 8 hours on the dehydrator he get his beef jerky....even the kids love it!
