from what i've read of the show, and yes, the media can spin things in any direction, cast members will go thru extremes (foods that are natural diuretics, saunas, no water, etc) before weigh ins to put up big numbers... that to me says that it's more about winning than health improvement...
I tend to agree with your two points, but for giggles....
IF this is happening, which who really knows, it could be out of desperation to win immunity.
That said, that'd be stupid, it's more likely for the money. Again, if it's happening. I've heard a lot of the rumors. I even heard drugs. I just have a hard time believing it.
*Most* of these contestants don't understand how to manipulate their weight to that extent.....
Unless we are suggesting the trainers provide the guidance?
My pet peeve with the show - and why I really believe it's more about winning, than health, is that the big numbers, that an ordinary human couldn't do under most circumstances are pretty much encouraged... what's sacraficed to get those numbers?
What do you think is sacrificed?
Honestly, I don't think much. When you have that much excess fat, you can lose a lot of weight at a 'crazy' rate relative to a leaner individual, safely I might add. Especially when all you have to do is exercise and eat right.
I'm not saying I agree with all of the exercise techniques and there are certainly more optimal ways of going about it.
You are right, it's not the real world. But that's why they are able to lose these big numbers.
And let's not lose sight of the fact that it's a weight loss competition. The bigger the numbers, the better the ratings. Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast.
I say unfortunately not b/c it's bad for the contestants, but b/c it implants an 'image' of how weight loss is supposed to be to the general public/viewers.
