Biggest Loser Tonight

Right.

I wouldn't call myself a fan.

But I definitely think the finale proves that pretty much anyone can do this, so stop making excuses.

I just kept thinking through the whole show, this should be mandatory viewing for the 64% of Americans who are overweight or obese. If these people could do what they did in the short amount of time they had, anyone could do it if they really wanted to.

My 5'3" 380lb mother has watched BL from season 1, and it has done nothing to motivate her. She hasn't even tried to lose weight in the last 5yrs or so. Even though her quality of life is terrible and she has all kinds of weight-related health problems. I think she likes to watch it bc she genuinely likes to see the contestants do well. And she's a sucker for almost any kind of reality TV competition.

I've enjoyed the show (never got in to it before this season) because it proves the point of good diet + consistent exercise = results.

The contestant's results aren't so far fetched if you consider they are living in a basic training type environment where they work out probably twice a day, do at least an hour of cardio and an hour of strength training a day and someone else makes all their food choices for them.

What I find the most interesting is to see the transformations of the people who got voted off. They are the ones to really look at for inspiration because they had to go back to the real world much sooner and apply all they learned.

I was talking to a lady I know last night - and she is overweight and not happy with how she feels. I kept encouraging her - she thought she was trapped in bad food choices because of her grocery budget and I was like - get frozen veggies instead of hamburger helper. Do brown rice and veggies and ground beef instead of pre=packaged chemicals and white flour. You will feel better!

No one can make a choice for me (or you or any one else) to loose weight. We can have the greatest motivations of all time, and until we decide to move on it, we'll stay at square one.

You know, my motivation was Kirsty Alley? I saw all her Jenny Craig commercials over the course of the year she lost all her weight and I kept telling myself that if I just started I would progress. I didn't get off that first square until last January.

Bikinibound, don't give up on your mom. You are being a good example for her, and you don't know what kind of steam needs to build up in her life before she'll move out of the station and onto the track for better health. Just lead by example and when you cook for her - give her healthy alternatives :) Sometimes a person needs to see that it is safe to move forward, they have been stuck in one place for so long.

God Bless,
mik

One of the guys I work with, who's mid 20s, marathon runner, super trim, eats and drinks like he's still in college, says he loves the show and watches it religiously as he chows down on potato chips, ice cream and other stuff - and thinks to himself as he's watching it - yeah if these people could do it -I should probably be doing something... then he says he has more chips and that's as far as he gets :)

If people would just get off the couch and just stop watching television... :)

Motivation comes in unique packages for each of us.

It's that simple folks.

I can listen to the gheyest song in the world that would put some to sleep, yet, I'm going nuts wanting to go pound out heavy ass deadlifts.

Others like heavy metal.

Some like seeing extremely fit people to see something to work towards.

Others like seeing extremely fat people to see something to move away from.

Some don't need or want any external motivation.... it all has to come from within.

Again, it's that simple.

If the BL motivates some people, fan-freaking-tastic. This society needs all the motivation it can get. As I said above, I wouldn't call myself a fan per se, but I do enjoy using it in my arsenal to say "shut your face, your metabolism is not screwed up, nor are your hormones. Obese individuals face the biggest hormonal problems out there in terms of metabolism and look at the biggest loser contestants. Same with subjects in controlled laboratory settings.... they ALWAYS lose weight." It simply squashes a lot of the 'personal situations' some people use in their defense.... that's what I take from the show.

It bothers me at times when I see people say, Biggest Loser is the greatest thing to happen to television.... this world needs a wake up call. And it MOTIVATES me beyond belief.

Yet, said person isn't losing weight. Said person is not following a plan, hell they didn't even make a plan. Said person screams about the motivation they receive from the show, yet they aren't acting on it.

What's motivation without action. I thought it was the fuel for action.... and I just don't see that from a large population of avid 'fans' of the show who claim it motivates them.

Maybe they are confusing motivation with an 'eye opening' experience. But that's not motivation.

And last thought for the day..... sort of tying into what I started with. Some people have used the show as motivation.... a fuel to initiate action. I've seen it with my own eyes. So in that sense, the show is good. Hell, the finale even motivated me..... or helped me remember WHY I do what I do.

Just remember, motivation comes in different packages for different people.

Also, if you say you're motivated by something yet you aren't acting on it.... it's probably time to reevaluate some things.

My .10 cents/

I think what bothers me about the show is that it makes it seem like its normal or somehow healthy or good to be losing 5 to 20 pounds a week. This reinforces the mentality it seems like many overweight people have (that come on the forums) that the weight must be taken off YESTERDAY and all austere and extreme means need to be applied (on Monday morning though, after a fun weekend of overeating on the very unhealthiest of the unhealthy), where the plan is to eat practically nothing and over-exercise and then get so f'n fed up by starving and killing themselves at the gym that POOF they give up and go right back to their old ways.

Weight loss shouldnt be an all or nothing thing because for most of us the "nothing" part WILL eventually win out in the end. Make it fun and go easy on yourself. Eat, feel good. Just eat less and better, more healthy.

You've got to admit that winning $250K or the other prize for those who got sent home (a $100K ?), would motivate anyone! I know I would be he he.

Yea but after the baseline nutrients are met, people that fat don't need much.

They can afford to diet pretty strictly and put up big weekly numbers.

In terms of mindsets and the psychology of it all though, who knows how it pans out. People might expect to see big numbers every week at home, but that would just be stupid.

It's not hard to realize that these people on the show are living and breathing diet and exercise. If you aren't doing the same, you'd be a moron to expect the same sort of end results.

Physical health, I don't see anything wrong with it, for the most part. I wouldn't use some of the training tactics the trainers use, but that's sort of moot.

Mental health, I really don't have a stand at this point in time.

From what I've read ad from what I've seen from people on this forum - depending on how "bad" a person's diet was before they started a healthy eating plan... 20lbs a week isn't a stretch -but it would be tough to maintain ....

I know I used to get incredibly frustrated at the beginning of my expeditio that I was oly losing 3- 4lbs a week when EVERYONE said I'd drop a ton of weight at the beginning.. but my pre-journey diet wasn't processed or horrible so I did't have a lot of crap to unload...

My 2 Cents as a Fan. ;)

I have watched this show since it started and haven't missed a season yet.

*It's important to remember*

They always state that the the "Big Numbers" that happen at the weigh in are due to the fact that all of them are at "Camp" with special help in ALL areas. Doctors/Personal Trainers/They receive Emotional Support/Help and they work out 4-5 hrs. a day. Their Personal Trainers teach them one on one RE: Nutrition/Calorie Counting.

No one should ever expect these results at home in a 4 month time frame.
If people set themselves up to "copy" the show and think they will reach those #'s, it's just silly bc as stated above the facts are explained at the start of the show and many times during the run of the show.

As a fan:

For me, the show is a great help. I find motivation/inspiration.
These are real people with real problems, so I can relate.
Bob and Jillian are awesome and they truly care about each person.
They just glow, shine, and motivate in such a powerful way you can feel the warmth and care through the t.v. :)

That's what the hook is. That's why the show does so well and why millions of people love the show and are inspired by the show.

The other hook for people like me is, you know you can't get huge results so quickly like on the show, but you are so inspired bc there is always someone in worse shape than yourself and if that person that is so much heavier and has medical issues to go along with their weight can do it--I can for sure get 40 lbs off!

It all boils down to HOPE.

This show gives people hope and that's a good thing. :)

The result show:

My eyes were full of tears the entire time.

It was wonderful seeing/feeling their excitement and accomplishments!

They all looked fantastic!

i love the show. hollie was my favorite this season. i was kind of sad she didn't win (i hate the evil twins) but she looked hot at the finale. i thought it was kind of ironic though how she mentioned moving to LA to help her stay on track.

do people not realize that the contestants on that show work out at LEAST 3 hours a day? I guess if it was my full time job to live somewhere where they basically force you to work out for at least 3 hours a day, and all your food is delivered to the house and you just do some basic cooking and a nutritionist emails you if you get off track and you have a body bugg on your arm to track exactly how many calories you burned that day....idk it makes sense for them to lose 5-10 pounds per week.

Yea, I'm divided on the impact the show has. It certainly is promising to those that are lacking hope at the moment, to see others accomplish what you want who were in most cases, worse off than you currently are.

On the other hand, I worry about it setting up false hopes. The giant numbers they put up each and every week for example.

Weight loss in the Biggest Loser Camp is a lot different than the real world.... and I could see where people might not recognize this and it could set up for some pretty harsh frustrations.

That said, what the finale says in a nutshell from my perspective is, people can stop saying, "I can't lose weight," "my body's different," "my hormones are screwed up."

It shows that in the end, hard work and consistency always trumps all.

When you train several hours a day and put yourself on a strict diet those are the results you get.

The difference being most people have jobs/kids/life in the way. The show most certainly represents what happens when you workout 2hrs a day and eat right though.

I like the show. It's a great motivation. I sometimes need someone to slap me around and get me moving...I like Jillian too T2...

Im sure some of the incredible 1st week drops in weight is due to water loading. If you are going to weigh in for the first time, why not load up on water to ensure a large weight loss so that you don't get sent home the 1st week.

I'd have to disagree with that, sorry no offense. I lost over 13 lbs my first week. Just because I was not working out at all before, was eating horribly, etc... then I tweaked everything, and wow, I've lost 21 lbs, and tomorrow, well actually today will be 2 weeks, so it can be done without water and all. I think it just depends on what you eat, and how hard you work. Again, no offense to you... Just my opinion from my experience so far.

No offense taken. Im just saying to lose 28lbs in a week is not feasible unless a lot of it is water. Maybe some of it was water they were naturally carrying, but that is a lot of water. Assuming it was all fat loss, that would be a 98000 calorie defecit in a week. That is a daily defecit of 14000 calories.
If they shed a gallon of water (weighs about 8.3 lbs) and lost 20lbs of body fat, that would still be a 9850 calorie daily defecit. It makes for good reality TV though. If they didn't post huge numbers the first week, I don't think they would hook as many viewers. Just my opinion.
