Alligatorob's Diary

Just curious: what's a birthday book?

It was a good day, the kids are gone and things are quiet. I ate well, if a little light, exercised and I feel good.

Nothing fancy, just something people at the party can sign. It was interesting, some folks just signed, others wrote a paragraph or so. He really seemed to like the idea.

Emma of Normandy was born in 984, she became queen of England, Denmark, and Norway through marriages to Kings Æthelred the Unready and Cnut the Great. In that order, not at the same time. There is an interesting legend, The Ordeal of Queen Emma:

Queen Emma was accused of unchastity with Bishop Ælfwine. In order to prove her innocence, she was obliged to undergo the ordeal of walking over nine red-hot ploughshares placed on the pavement of the nave of Winchester Cathedral. Two bishops conducted the barefoot Queen to the line of red-hot ploughshares. She walked over the red-hot ploughshares, but felt neither the naked iron nor the fire.

I'd have liked to see that.

Rob it sounds like a super fun party. I love that it was back to basics , bowling and disco lights and those plug in games. Simple is the best. Hope the sleep over went well. You sound like really cool granparents.

Ah, so it´s like a specialized guest book. Queen Emma lived in a rough time! Trial by ordeal seems to have been common at one time and I´m sure the people conducting the trial had their ways to rig it in favor of those they presumed innocent.

Just did my 40 laps plus 1 lagniappe.

I think it is getting easier to do the laps, but I seem to be getting a little bored with it. Sometimes a kind of done that now, what's next feeling. But I do still have a compelling need to get out and do it. I think I can stick to it, upping the gear has probably helped with the feeling of challenge. It hasn't been that long, just got the bike about 2 months ago, did my first ride the first day I had it.

Thanks Petal, it was a fun party and the sleepover went well. The kids seem happy.

It was a good day, got my ride in and ate well.

Tried a "Beyond Burger", the vegetable based hamburger substitute, Burger King is now selling a burger made with one. They are really being hyped right now. I was totally disappointed, the thing cost a lot, didn't taste great, and had more calories than a real burger. My wife makes a black bean based veggie burger that tastes a lot better, costs a lot less and has fewer calories. And I am pretty happy with a real burger. Only eating the patties these days though. Had to eat 3 90 calorie tins of sardines today, it was the dogs fault. Normally I eat 2, and the dogs get to lick the cans, but today we had the grandkids dog, so 3 dogs and I needed 3 cans. Didn't seem to hurt the calorie count.

Thanks Rob, I appreciate your support.
i would think laundry day would be the real ordeal...
Good point, but back then I am not sure laundry was much of a priority.
Maybe it´s time for more regular rides away from home?
Yeah, I have been thinking about that, need to do it before the weather gets worse.

In 1022 Robert II the Pious or the Wise, King of the Franks, reinstated the Roman custom of burning heretics at the stake. He had a number of marital problems resulting in his annulling of 2 marriages and an attempt to annul his 3rd, it only ended when the Pope refused. He died whilst fighting a civil war against his sons. He seems neither wise nor pious to me.

And he didn´t even start his own church. Fancy that. So pious.
As far as we know people have always wanted to look and smell good. So at least underclothes would have got washed regularly.

Yet another disappointment in food purchases . I wonder Rob would you have cared In the past . I think we appreciate more now what we both eat and spend on food ?
well done on a good day though .

It was a good day, I got my 40 laps and lagniappe in today, just to busy to post right afterwards. I ate well, but had trouble getting up the enthusiasm to eat so came up a little short. This whole not wanting to eat sometimes is very new to me, don't really understand it. Right now I feel quite full, but I know I have not eaten a lot today.

I love this logic!
You got to do what you got to do! Down to 2 dogs today so only 2 tins of sardines for lunch.

Good point, probably not, in the past I probably would not have even tried the Beyond Burgers, and yes I do find myself being much more particular about food. I turn things down just because I don't want to waste calories on something that doesn't look good, or is too caloric. All new for me.

I fly to Chicago tomorrow and get home Friday, so no bike for a few days. I think I will do ok eating in restaurants, kind of got that figured out. And I will carry some jerky treats for emergencies. I will do my best to count calories and post, but its always a bit harder when I am on the road. I do get to wear my new jacket!

Oh, I forgot to say, for the first time a lot of folks noticed my weight loss at the birthday party, or commented anyway. Mostly parents of kids I had not seen in a while. That felt good.

Saint Wenceslaus I or Wenceslas, the good I who became the duke of Bohemia died in 935. Assassinated by his younger brother Boleslaus the Cruel who seems to have earned his nickname. He only became a King by Papal decree, after his death. He is the King Wenceslas in the famous Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas" which was actually written to celebrate St Stephen's day (December 26), not Christmas.

Sounds good to me :) Does the sometimes not wanting to eat tie in with that? I sometimes don't feel like eating but it's that I can't be bothered with the options I have available and better stuff would be too much work.

Marvelous!

Yes! Go for the best and forget the rest! After a while the rubbish food just doesn't feel worth wasting appetite on. (Oooohhh... look at me, turning into Marie Antoinette! )

Great that people at the party were noticing how good you're looking, and I love that you'll be wearing your flash new slimline sports jacket :coolgleamA: on the business-trip!

Rob well done on the 1lb loss , that’s great you are in the 240s now . Look how far you have come .
