Ab Wheel is for wimps!

OK- So, I got an ab wheel today, "ironman" brand sold me. what a sucker!

I can stretch it out no problem, and i did 3 sets of 15. It seems toooo easy.

I have read ab wheel of p[ain, torture whatever. HA!

so- tell me what you do with your ab wheel. hurt me. Let's "get is on!"
 
It might make a good back massager
 
Starting on your feet and extending all the way out, and rolling back up to the starting position.

Or, if you are hardcore, you should do that with a weight vest. :D
 
Ab wheel is probably for beginners that never have worked out before or do not have any core strength yet. I should try it myself and see if its easy or not. I have done a roll out on the stability ball before and its pretty tough.
 
I've never used one personally. I prefer weighted hanging leg raises, a 3-way no rest weighted "keep tension" crunch set (side and front), Knee ups, self made weighted cable crunch (just recently finished making this on my own), And, a indirect ab work from Squats, Deads, GM's.

And I do plate weight cardio on a bike with russian twists at the same time and some times add in DB side bends.

Just a few examples.

No one should critisize the ab roller until they've tried it. And even then, until they've tried the hardcore style.

They make ab rollers with feet inserts. If you can do reps holding a roller, with your feet in a roller, starting on your "feet", wearing a weighted vest, I will bow to you as Sifu.

I have a question. Instead of buying an ab wheel, why wouldnt a dumbell work just as good?


For example, an olympic style DB, with two olympic style 5 lb (or 10lb) plates (one on each side), and use a stemless collar. One could place the hands on the exposed outside portion of the DB and perform various ab rolling exercises, no? Would this work? Why pay the 10 or so bucks when one could do this?
 
Yes. Personally I use an olympic bar with some weights at the end.

Very interesting. A short bar (like a curling straight bar) would work then too.
Do you do traditional exercises or have you developed some modifications to intensify the target area? I would be interested in learning what you do.
 
I don't have some equipment I'd like to have, so sometimes I just improvise. I doubt most of my improvisations intensify muscle contraction, other than using the biggest bar with some big bumper plates at the ends on ab rolls. This is probably a bit harder (I don't know if the difficulty is significant-- never tried a real ab roller) since it takes more effort to stop the movement of the bar and roll it back towards your body. This, folks, is moment of inertia :D

hmmm, on my feet, or feet on the wheel, okee dokee, I will play with it more tonight. Now you got me thinking about it a bit, what about the garage floor, verses the carpet. yeah ok... cool

this is what I was lookin for- some ideas to crack this thick head of mine.

but yer still all wimps.... well- the ones that posted to this thread anyways! ppppfffffttt!
 
Then you'd have to buy the dumbells.

I have a pair of olympic DB's (and a SB and LB), this is the reason why I had asked. And, slapping on a pair of small olympic plates would be near the same mechanic make up as the ab wheel. I may give this ago 2morrow (rest day today) and mess around with it and see how it goes. I never actually did the ab wheel exercise during the entire time I have been dieting and fitness training. I am going to do some research on the various ways to perform the exercise, and see if it will have any benefit.

2 sets of 15 is nothing... not to be challenging you but I do well over a hundred on mine and it starts to kill and gets things burning like crazy... I say you have to up it. I can do 3 sets of 15 dumbbell bench with 10 lbs like cake... doesn't mean that dumbbell bench is crap.

Dumbell bench has its place for certain people in development training, no one should tell you differently. Why do you do 100 reps with the ab wheel?
