I'm really kicking around the idea of getting the NIKE+ shoes to go with my iPOD http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/gear.htm

Isn't that awesome? When the nike gear was first announced I wanted one, but I wanted a road bike more lol. priorities!

wow, looks like we've both been having the same problems. First trying to get to such and such # of calories and now realizing we need more.... and by the looks of it, we've both lost 4 lbs in the aug. club... geez, m2m, quit copying me! :D

Hey, M.

Why don't you try adding on a few extra calories in the morning with breakfast? Eat a bigger breakfast, then when you eat the rest of the day as you have been, you will have a few extra under your belt. You're eating them early, so you are using them up for sure.

Have a fantastic Wednesday!

Oh Pineola - that's a great idea! I normally keep my breakfast around 200 calories, but bumping it up is a good idea - yesterday I finished with 1340 - it's slowly creeping up!

And Mike, as for copying you, well, what can I say, immitation is the highest form of flattery ;) As for the shoes, well, I haven't seen a price on them yet - I know the kit is about $30 and then there's the cost of the shoes...which I haven't even tried on, I just love the idea of the technology!

Jenn, I hope you're able to walk with your old walking buddy more often as time goes by - it really does help!!

So, I got on one of those torture devices last night - you know, those eliptical machines.

OMG!

I did one mile. That was it. I survived it, but I have not sweat quite like that, in all the time I've been exercising!. I went 1 mile in 14:35 minutes, then did a 5 minute .3 mile warm down.

The sweat was pouring off my body!

I think part of it was the increased speed as well as the fact that it is in a house. I do like being outside and having that breeze is a HUGE help!

We have some clients who are out of country for 3 weeks, and my husband and I alternate staying at their house taking care of their property and dogs while they're away. It is a beautiful estate and the exercise room is amazing! It feels like we're at a 5 star resort. I went there last night (hence the eliptical) ;) They have this machine that I've never seen or heard of (not surprising, considering I haven't stepped foot in a gym since '91) and I don't know if these machines are common or not, it's called ROM...the makers of this machine bill this as a 4 minute cross training work out.

I only did the upper body workout, not the lower body.
It will be interesting to see what 3 weeks of using this machine can do!

I think eating too few calories definitely makes you plateau. One thing that I have really done is by going on all these trips my calories have been fluctuating and I think it helps. You are doing amazing though and I'm sure you'll get past this one.

Interesting Observations

So I was just sitting here doing some math in regards to my weight loss so far...

I started 20 January 06
The first 18 weeks, I lost 19 pounds (1.05 per week). All I was doing was reducing calories and taking walks 2 times a week or so.

I joined WLF 28 May 06
The last 11 weeks, I lost 26 pounds (2.36 per week). Counting calories and walking daily.

It is amazing to me what this forum has done in providing me with a place to stay focused, motivated and inspired!!

I feel like im going to get rid of my weight the best here too. So many people to keep you motivated and all these challanges to keep you pushing yourself! Are you part of a challenge right now? Im trying to start a 6 week one.

M2M...GIRL!!!! You've been doing all that walking on a 200 calorie breakfast!!!! ***smacking my forehead** Piney is right. You need to give yourself more fuel in the morning. Don't make us worry about you!! LOL!!!

I love the math. And it goes to prove that the interaction really does help. Good going!!!

LOL! No, it's hard to say what really constitutes breakfast for me.

I generally have 1/2 a power bar before I walk or exercise

Here's a typical day
5:45 am Half a power bar before my walk 87 cs
8:00 am Half a power bar & yogurt after my walk 147 cs

Mid morning snack
10:00 am slim fast drink 170 cls

Lunch
12:30 Salad from Trader Joes ~350 cls depending on salad
These salads are amazing - the low fat seafood louie has shrimp, mock crab, romaine, 1/2 egg for a total of 290 cls (it's what I had today) :) The other salads have either black beans, or kidney beans, chicken, cheese, etc and the calorie content includes the dressings.

Mid Afternoon Snack
3:00 blueberries, grapes, cherry tomatoes ~50 cs

Dinner
Generally a meat dish ~180-200 cls
Steamed vegies ~50
TJ's salad split in thrids ~130 cls

Dessert either a Tofuti Cute 110 cs or fruit >50 cs

On that sample day there's about 1290 calories. But often I end up splitting my mid day salad with Megan or don't grab some cottage cheese, etc - I'm trying to eat more, but it feels like all I'm doing is eating!

I'm up to 718 calories today by 12:30. I'm doing better, but I've been eating so much I haven't been drinking water LOL!

Mike - THANK YOU for that link! Very, very cool :D

Angie - I always join the 10# a month club, although only once did I lose the 10 pounds ;) It's nice to have a challenge to keep you motivated. As for the other challenges, I've done one, and loved the commradrie, but I want to take a break from that pressure for now. Good luck with your 6 week challenge!

okay, will you please please (see, I'm begging here!! LOL!!) add some more to your breakfast? A handful of nuts, some oatmeal, a banana...something!!! You need your energey to do all that walking and I know people swear by the power bar things....but nothing does the trick like whole foods.

I'm done preaching now...sorry!!! I know if I got on that treadmill before I had some reasonable sustenance I wouldn't get as good of a workout.

I will Scarlett :) I am trying to boost my calories, and doing it in the morning seems a great solution! I just don't like eating much before my work out, I don't like having too much on my stomach, but I will add *something*

:)

Don't we love our Scarlett?

That machine sounds kind of cool. I can't wait to see what it does for you. Someone at the gym last night showed me a really cool exercise that really gets the back of your calves, you hamstring area and your butt! I'm going to do it and see what happens. It is kind of awkward. You are actually using a machine that is used by sitting down, but you stand up and do it. I'm glad nobody at my gym cares what people look like their doing in there.

Although the forum is the greatest.....don't forget that you are the one who used the forum and did all the hard work! Have a magical Thursday!

Never worry about being pushy Scarlett - you are right. It's just taken me awhile to convince myself that lower calories is not always in my best interest!

And Piney, that machine in the link I posted (the ROM) is an amazing piece of equipment - I don't know if it deserves a $14K+ price tag, but I'm willing to give it a go for the next 3 weeks or so ;) I just have a hard time imagining "A Complete And Total WorkOut" that only takes 4 minutes a day. It goes against everything I've ever known, heard, read or thought about when it comes to getting a cardio work out as well.

This Precor Strength Training system is what they replaced by getting the ROM

I have been taking care of this property since '92 and have always had access to the weight room - I really regret not taking advantage of it in the past.

Hi M2M, that's a nice pic (cute smile) next to your handle.

I too eat half a granola bar (with a few sips of water) before exercising. If I don't eat anything, I don't get as good a workout. But I'm just not hungry enough yet to eat more. So I see why you don't like eating much before your work out or don't like having too much food in your stomach; I feel the same way.

It's also hard to eat much after a workout. It feels like you are just replacing what you worked so hard to burn off. I usually have cereal w/milk after working out (similar calories 150).

Guess I'm just saying I get it...

Awesome results you posted this morning on "Observations" on your weight loss year-to-date.

I can't workout on too full a stomach either...usually I choke down some fruit and a small glass of milk, then eat a bit after.

Good Morning Everyone :)

I finished yesterday with 1213 calories - I don't get it, I felt like I was eating all day - I was never hungry but I'm *trying* to up my calories to the 14-1500 range. Geesh...I think I need to write out a 1500c meal plan and stick to it. Maybe add some cheese to my diet.

Anyway, I walked 4.4 miles this morning and did some upper body strength training yesterday. I did some great tricep, bicep and shoulder exercises, but um...about those abs...am I really ready for that? ;) Blrugh!

Patty & DQ - I so hear ya about not wanting to eat much in the morning - it's hard, but man am I starving when I come home from my walk!!

Thanks Cannon, that 50 mark is creeping up :D
At 51 I am technically at my halfway mark AND I will go from being obese to being "over weight" AND I will qualify for regularly priced health insurance.

It's this close!!
:D

August 23rd Challenge

I am hosting a wine club at my house next Wednesday night.

Back on 25 June, I wrote:
When I was 257 pounds, thinking I would be 230 pounds seemed almost unattainable - but now I know different. I have a party at my house on 23 August - realistically, I can be down to 210 by then - that would be 20 pounds in 8 weeks - and a total weight loss of 47 pounds! That's less then I've already lost, so I *KNOW* I can do it!

Twin mom came in and said:
Speaking of on track, I would like to formally accept your 20 pound challenge. (Yes, I know you weren't talking to me, but if we are buddies, I've gotta keep up! ) I was already looking hopefully at reaching that weight by Labor Day weekend, so that's not so far off. 2 1/2 pounds a week, right? We can do it! 210 by August 23!!!!

This morning - I hit 210.6 on the scale
:)
It was *after* my walk, so technically and officially, I'm not there yet, definitely by my Saturday official weigh in - but when Twinny made that challenge the back of my head said "No Way!" while the front of my mouth said "Sure, you're On!"
