50 Pounds to Subaru Journal

My name is Ashley, and I am working on losing weight. I am 23, and like many, I have always struggled with my weight, and after a series of personal events, I was left at my personal high of 213.

One of my hobbies is costuming (dorky, I know). There is an anime convention coming up on April 5 and I want to wear a costume of one of my favorite characters, Subaru from .hack//sign () As you can see, the costume would reveal my stomach to the world, and that thought makes me squeamish.

So I am losing weight. My goal is 160 which will be lower than I've ever weighed. I may not be as thin as the character, but I don't think I'll have to be ashamed at that point. Right now, I am a month in and currently weigh 203.

I am following the Hackers Diet, a simple, free online theory of weight loss which has worked well for me. I can't forbid myself any kind of food or that's all I think about. I'm going more for a trend of eating significantly fewer calories than I consume.

I am also working out, though any ideas on creative exercise would be appreciated. Right now I do the elliptical for about 45 minutes 5 mornings and 5 evenings a week. When I don't work out I play DDR, am learning to juggle, and considering buying a yo-yo. I know these don't sound like much of a workout, but it's more active than sitting in front of the TV. And....you've never realized what a pain picking something up off the floor is until you've dropped a juggling ball about a thousand times.

Do you have any ideas of creative, fun, active things to do? Going for a walk has never done much for me, but flying a kite sure sounds entertaining.

Exhausted

I am so tired. Just got back from working out, and my left knee got rather sore and bothersome. it's tough to convince myself to keep going when something doesn't feel right.

I ended up doing the last 5 minutes on the treadmill rather than elliptical.

ooo... be careful not to hurt yourself! What's the Hacker's Diet? I've never heard of that one. Anyway - Welcome to the forum!! :D

Thanks for responding. Not a major hurt, just a little knee unhappiness. I don't have enough persistance to keep doing something if it actually hurts ;-)

The Hackers Diet is just a free book that's been online for a few years that is basically a calorie counting plan. The main benefit and tool from the hackers diet is the concept of using weighted moving averages to chart your weight. This way, the daily ups and downs don't freak you out so badly.

The tools are available for free from hackersdiet.com

Great suggestions! Hula hoops! That's EXACTLY the kind of thing I'm looking for. LOL, i can just see it now:

"So, what's your exercise schedule?"
"Well, on Monday I juggle, Tuesday I play DDR, Wednesday I hula hoop...."

Hey - I knew someone here would have heard of cosplay!

Subaru will be my fifth costume. This is a picture of me at my highest weight in a Narcissa Malfoy costume at the Harry Potter Symposium in Vegas.

An inch!

-Journal Entry 10/4/06-

I was putting on my pants this morning and they felt loose. So i whipped out my tape measure and I lost an inch around my waist! All this time I thought it was that sort of invisible weight that you can lose without really making a difference, but I lost a real, tangible inch! Hot dog!

wooo.. that costume is awesome!! I have a confesion to make *deep breath* I'm 26 years old... and I love the Harry Potter books. lol... congrats on the disappearing inch - you're going to look great in your Subaru costume!!

Thanks for the compliment on the costume. I worked very hard on it.

I can't judge anybody on their harry potter fandom until they spend 3 days in Vegas attending academic seminars on such subjects as "The Sorting Hat, Ideology and Free Will", "Gender, Agency and Alternate Myth-Making in the Characterization of Ginny Weasly" or "Mutually Assured Destruction: Harry and Voldemort in a Cold War Context" :)

I spend Wednesday night at my mother's house, which is weight loss suicide. I'm already over my 1400 for the day, and even though I spend every wednesday and saturday over here, each of those two days I end up closer to 1800 calories, and I don't work out the evening I am over here or the next morning.

Do you think this is OK? It's been 5 weeks like this, and I still seem to be losing weight, so maybe Wednesday and Saturday evenings can be like my "cheat evenings". I know it's more than most people usually take, but do you think it will destroy my weight loss?

Using my more atypical exercises I will be more active at my mother's, and we do walk the dogs. I just don't spend my 45 minutes on the elliptical.

Forever!

It just occurred to me - I'm going to be a thin person forever! If this really is a lifestyle change, and I think it is, after my 7 months are over I should be a new, skinnier me! All this time I've been thinking that I'll be a fat person pretending to be thin for a while, but I can actually be whatever weight I want forever! How cool!

That's what is so great about changing your lifestyle and dealing with the issues at hand - the weightloss may take much much longer but you learn how to stay thin instead of the "loose a million pounds in just 2 days - yes two short days!!!" crash diet.

And your calories are right with my top level of intake. Have you looked at (my preferance) or They can tell you what is a safe calorie range based on your goals, they have a tool to help you count calories and record them and its free.

Thanks!

I do have a fitday account. The reason i prefer fitday is that dietfacts.com has an "add custom to fitday" button so I don't have to do the entering of all my fast food :)

I haven't seen sparkpeople, I'll check that out.

Hey there! 2 days where you get a bit over your cal intake shouldn't be too bad :)
If you can, just try to slowly bring down whatever you're eating at your mom's place.
If not, well just gotta keep working hard the other days :) It seems to be working for ya so far so don't beat yourself up about it :D

For some reason I just feel like you are already a success! Keep up the good work. The couple of days going over your calorie intake won't hurt you too bad, i Don't think. Plus, as your stomach shrinks you won't be able to eat that much naturally, it will get easier and easier. I know how you feel. Whenever I go to my mom's house she trys to stuff me, the more I diet the more she stuffs. I think she wants to keep me all to herself as a fat little daughter :D jsut jking.

But, I really do think you are on your way to a success.

The #1 cool way I want to exercise is kayaking...I loooooooooooooooooooooooove my dogs. they are so cool! And, what I am going to do after the christmas challenge is over is buy a kayak, two doggie life vests, and you guessed it, kayak with my dogs. I have always wanted to do this, and I'm gonna darg gonnit. :D So, my suggestion, if you have pets that you looove as much as I do, take them along, do stuff with them.

If not, well, your skrewed. Just jking :p I bet kayaking would be fun by yourself too!!!

Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement and the great idea. Unfortunately, I live in Phoenix :) Water is a little hard to track down. But I hope you have a great time, and I"m sure you will!

~Journal 10/6/06~

I am pleased to say the scale keeps coming down. 201.6 now :) I actually will need to increase my caloric intake a bit, my goal is to be at 204.5 right now so I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

I worked up the nerve to start strength training today! I usually spend time on the elliptical or treadmill in the morning, but this morning I cut that down and worked out on the strength training machines instead. I had planned to start this morning anticipating that my apartment gym would be empty, but there was a guy there. I almost quit :) But I didn't, and it wasn't so bad.

I am mostly nervous that I'm not using the machine right. I think I am, and I can feel it, but I feel like I'm the only one not entirely sure of what to do. Anybody else face this?
