To be honest, in the beginning I just cut down my calorie intake (nothing extreme, just cut down portions and no snacking) and lost about 30 lbs in the first month. I eat veggies and low-calorie (& low sod.) soups mainly. I'm not a big meat eater and I no longer eat bread. I make lettuce roll-ups without the bread and LOVE them. In the beginning I just tried to move alittle bit more every day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator at school,etc. Then I mustered the strength and will-power to hit the gym. Now I exercise 5-6 times a week. I do cardio & weights.
Oh, and I drink water water water & more water.
